It seems that there might have been special behaviour for summoning and pet casters.

I see two mentions of this across quite a span of time, implying Naggy would summon the pet owners rather than focus on the pets:

Naggy is the ONE mob that can't be done without tanks. Why? Because he COULD
be done using only pets, until Verant retuned him to summon the casters
instead of focusing on the pets.

Note that no other mob, with the possible exception of Cazic, has this
ability- plane breakins are done without tanks ALL THE TIME nowadays.

I seem to recall he was done with less. Pre-Kunark. WAY pre-kunark,
before the way summoning worked against pet aggro was changed (and how
necro pets fought, for that matter). It was just a pack of necros with
an enchanter for clarity - they just kept the pets rolling in over and
over.

Again, this was very early in EQ's raiding days.

More evidence would be nice and contributions are appreciated, whether for or against.

Soon as the pet attacks nag the owner is summoned.

It looks like in vanilla the big mobs simply ignored pets completely which led to some sploits:

Before Kunark major mobs ignored pets. When Paw first opened and the Ishva Mal was considered bad ass (Back before he was pussified and went from 12k hp to 4k hp) he also ignored pets.. made it SIMPLE for a 50th chanter to solo him..

Pull Ishva so pet would aggro.. Blur Ishva and gate to zone.. Ishva dies because he did not aggro on master (due to distance), and pet beat him to death without him defending himself.. run in loot, return in 30 hours to try it again. (yes, I saw it done that way)

They did alot of changes to pet aggro and summoning shortly after necros/mages figured out they could do this, which killed those particularly fun exploits...

This is right since the last patch the 'Pet Army' is history.
One guild on Solusek Ro learned this in a painfull way.

The casters got summonned and got eaten real fast!

any updates on this?

Would only summon the pet's master if they had nothing else on the hate list that wasn't also a pet. So as long s some non-pet was maintaining aggro they wouldn't be summoned.

I think the real takeaway here is that there was a distance check for leash.

I remember being able to run away from mobs with sow, or have fleeing mobs get very far away, and not re-agro until you got back into range.

Currently, if you agro the ishva and gate, all of paw is coming for you.
