Statistics on research page drops

I have been thinking for a while now that mage drops are very rare, so I decided to do some investigating today.

I've spent 9 hours in unrest killing 24-33 mobs which, according to the wiki, have an equal chance of dropping a research material.

We were clearing the entire basement cycle at a solid pace, ahead of respawns, aside from 2 cycles where replacements were coming in. There were 22 mobs that were being cleared at a rate every 21 minutes. Approximately 594 mobs were killed during our extended session.

Here are my (actually quite surprising) findings:

84 necro pages.
62 chanter pages.
36 wizard runes.
0 mage pages (but 1 gloves of rallos zek dropped...).

The level of imbalance is so severe that I'm seriously considering that there is a quite fundamental bug, rather than just a decreased drop rate.

I am going to continue to monitor this as I progress through the levels. Any other thoughts as towards why this is happening would be useful to assist me.

I've been soloing in Najena for a week. Many runes, necro and ench pages. Zero mage. I've been happy as ench, but boy it must be rough to be a mage.

On a side note, the level of content I've been killing has been dropping lvl 16 and 20 research components. An occasional lvl 24 peice. Zero mage though. None.

Level 35 Mage now. I have witnessed about 5 - 6 drops of Words of Dimension, 1 drop of Words of Coercion, total from level 1 to 35 which was all spent grouping in dungeons. Maybe 12 - 20 of the Gloves of Rallos/Jade Shard/Ice of Velious etc components.

Mage words are just ridiculous to acquire and if this is working as intended, it's still broken as fuck. I have spent well over 1000pp (3 Coercion, 1 Duress, fees for higher mages to do combines) buying from other players to obtain a 24, 29 and 34 pet.

Actually I got both the necro hungry earth words from them too so its not just magician

The ones that I'm specifically referencing are the ones that drop from 24+ mobs.

Gloves of RZ are needed 24-39, so under level 8 mobs dropping them is of note.

I see what you're saying but it's not prohibiting mages from getting their pets.

I'm still maxing every pet before I get to the level that I can use it.

So its not going to stop mage zergs, or Naggy being sucked off by 50 gnomes.

I'm just looking at the drop rates from a scientific stance. The drop rate is peculiar.

To be honest I am glad it cut down on the mage numbers. I genuinely love the class and didn't pick it for easymode or just to farm up the character I actually want to play. I want to main a mage and I'm sticking with it.

Mage non-word pet reagent materials seem to share the loot table with every other word, like the flame of vox that dropped, so this doesn't function like necro pet words spanning multiple levels as the lynchpin resource (words of dimension, coercion, etc) are ALWAYS part of this chain and always require additional reagents.

The equivalent would be necromancer spells taking the level 20 pet, and every subsequent levels pet combine materials thereafter, for every level and for every combine, until there was no room in their research book to complete their spells after level 29. Even then, that would just be one pet type, and magician words share the loot table with 4 pet type materials all of which are situationally useful and define their class. In addition, for levels 29-39 two of the pet materials can be vendor bought - yet still occupy the loot table.

A quick fix that didn't throw this system out would be magician pet specific mats having a 1/4 chance to drop with magician words (of which pet words aren't the only ones), or a chance to double or triple drop with each other but completely at random and only occupying a single spot on the research material loot table.

But that wasn't how it got fixed on live as they obviously just mitigated the painful process of getting all ones 49 pets. A process which is guaranteed to put mages up against the trivial research fail rate when they have 4 pet types that need 6x combines each.

Having said that, the 49 earth pet is worth all the effort, as are the other pets for their niches. I look forward to the pet patch.

Honestly guys I don't think the drop rates are any different from blue. With only my memory and anecdotal evidence, I can tell you that the materials are hard to come by. I found most of my mats on blue from dumpster diving.

Words of Coercion and Convocation are particularly rare there, and I never really found a good place to farm Convocation. I know they drop from mobs around level 45-47. I don't recall anything about Coercion because I zoomed through that level range. Pretty sure I just used the vendor pets for 29.

As for the gloves, ice, breath etc they drop off high level mobs as well, and after a point the server will be saturated with them, just like on blue. All this being said, mage research is definitely the hardest in my opinion.

yeah the difference on blue is research wasnt needed. So you wont find those materials nearly as much as on blue.

The lower lvl ones (sister of errolisi) and the other ones by the tree, dock and ones with swords. A necro got a couple from the ones with swords that I was sable to trade for.

Ive been getting a few PM's about the orc scouts.

I found them because I was farming honeycombs for the shining star of light. They are basically peppered in the same places as the bixies that I was hunting along the road between Rivervale and WC. There are not a whole lot of them. I only made note of the unusual research component drops because I was such low level and never see that stuff until 16. It seemed to be Necro / Magician items. Words of Materials, Words of Transcendence, Words of Tyranny seem to happen. Mobs are level 5-8

Enchanter... But I had always planned on that. My 29 mage is now parked and instead of blowing my 3k plat savings on 29 and 34 pets that will be available in a month, I will put the funds into something that will last a little longer.
