View Full Version : Miscellaneous: Magician and Necro pets shouldn't grow in size or change colour until October 1999

Dolalin

Prior to October 1999, all mage and necro pets seem to have been the same size and colour across the entire level span.

This was adjusted to the model growth / colour change we know today in this patch:

Spell Enhancements

- High level Necromancer and Magician pets now look different.

This is also mentioned by Brad in his end of year post:

NECROS:

+ Added New Looks to Necromancer Pets

Screenshot Evidence

Necro pets

This is a screenshot of a level 34 necromancer NPC in Mistmoore (a dark ritualist) with white skeleton pets:

This is a white skeleton pet at a Nagafen raid:

https://web.archive.org/web/20001011162242/http://gameznet.com/eq/sceenshots/solb/nagafenhead.jpg

Compare the size to what seems to be a level 4 or 8 necro pet from around the same time:

https://web.archive.org/web/20000831210739/http://gameznet.com/eq/sceenshots/skeleton.JPG

https://web.archive.org/web/20000831205356/http://gameznet.com/eq/sceenshots/necrocasting.JPG

Magician pets

Here are screenshots of a fire pet at the same Nagafen raid as above:

https://web.archive.org/web/20010702051933/http://gameznet.com/eq/sceenshots/solb/massfear.jpg

https://web.archive.org/web/20010702050917/http://gameznet.com/eq/sceenshots/solb/giantsattack.jpg

I still need to find an equally dated picture of a lower level fire pet to compare.

Newsgroup Evidence

Post from July 1999 stating that necro pets don't change with levels, and that magician elementals don't vary in size:

7/27/99

Hi
I would like to see them fix the way our pets look at the different levels.
I know that this would not be that hard to do and would add alot more flavor
to the game. let pets reflect the level they are by looks.

Example.

Necro

1 to 4 Skeleton
4 to 8 Zombie
9 to 12 Tourmented
13 to 16 mummy
17 to 20 ghoul
21 to ...you get the point

most of these can use wepons already so that should not be a problem its
just a matter of coding the right pet model for the level.

elementals could be varing in size and intensity of color.

Sword pets could start with small shields and daggers and move up to larger
shilds and bigger weapons.

This would not make the stats change, but would just fix the way they
looked.

Andreas

Let me know what you all think.

Oh...am glad to see that the warriors and rouges got buffed a bit...they
needed it.

Another implying that necro pets aren't different at higher levels:

Different artwork for the higher level pets would be nice.
Substituting other undead for the pets could work, but if they put in a
mummy just hope that they don't move like mummys. Of course, I would
like to have a coal black skellie with burning red eyes.

Magician pets across the various levels "all look the same":

8/3/99

They are different "ranks" of pets
Elementalkin (level 4?)
Elementaling (level 8?)
Elemental (level 12?)

They all look the same though. They may require different stones to cast
though.. (Malachite, Lapis Luzi, etc..)

well not that i really care about pet zie, i am not convince by this evidence, they seem more to imply that model dosent change.

But their idea would have been pretty neat for necro, skeletons, mummy, etc.

If it helps, i remmeber that back when pets were using dagger delay, 49 pets were white and tall af

Finally strong evidence for pets looking identical, pre-patch:

8/2/99

Dont know if you'll read this, but what the hell:
I think its odd that all pets look alike for the respective classes. What I
mean is this, there is no way to tell the difference between an
Elementalkin, and a Greater Elelmental ( of course you could use /con, but I
mean from a strictly visual perspective ). I wish that would be changed
somehow. Id like to see a mage with a towering mountain of stone following
him around ( maybe something as simple as a Sand Giant model with a 'rocky'
skin ), or a blazing pillar of flame doing his/her bidding. Kind of a
reward for getting to that high of a level. This should also hold true for
Necromancers, a first level necromancer should have a relatively
unimpressive pet following him around, but a level 50 Necromancer should
have a juggernaut of death under his control, and the pet should look the
part. I always thought it'd be neat if at higher levels, instead of a sword
and shield, my Enchantress could summon up an Animated Suit of Armor. Kind
of like a model of a human in full plate if the human were invisible. I
dont know that much about coding, but how hard could it be to whip up some
more skins for already existent monsters? I know, I know, probably much
harder than I think. But I personally believe these VISUAL changes, changes
EVERYONE could see would mean much more and be much more far reaching than
adjusting some stats and numbers for the various classes. I know Id be a
lot more satisfied with my mage, necro, or enchanter if I knew I had these
things waiting for me, and Id have more incentive to reach higher levels.
What do you think?
Awaiting the flames,

Excellent Suggestions, I have a lvl 12 Mage, and my pets looks exactly the
same as a guild mates high lvl pet (Shes lvl 45)

Check out
http://www.everworld.net/magic/mag.shtml

These have magician pets from the beta, What happened to these? No idea...
one of the main reasons for me having a mage was to get a decent looking pet
at a higher lvl.

I really hope Brad reads this, maybe the add-on pack comes with new pets?

so the initial low lvl pets should be bigger - got it

Dolalin

Yes all pets should be the same size. There are a few screenshots provided for reference on the mage pets. From the screenshots I believe all necro pets were roughly the same size as a decaying skeleton and were white all the way up to 49.

This is one of those cosmetic things that is probably low-ish priority but is also a fairly straightforward data fix I would think.

I've found more screenshot evidence of this.

More evidence, this one from May 1999.

This screenshot is taken at approx loc 300, -400 in qcat, facing Lyris Moonbane. All NPCs in the room are Necro guildmasters. They all have decaying-skeleton-sized white pets.

Also another thing wrong I found off the back of this, it seems Bruax Grengar and Kurne Rextula should have pets. They presently do not on P99, but I see they have pet entries in the zone-npc-level-list.xls file I dug up:

qcat Kurne_Rextula00_pet 0 1274 1274 37 37
qcat Bruax_Grengar00_pet 0 770 770 25 25

More evidence from this vox raid slideshow. High level necro pet on vox raid is a white decaying-skeleton-size and dual-wielding daggers (only brown pets should do this post-change). Screen grab attached, link to video below.

(Bonus evidence that necros were still using CoB because Lich wasn't scribable until like September 1999. See here: https://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=336032 )

The slideshow contains the Halloween event in 1999 just after those shots. In between I can see the necro pets turn from white to darkboned.

https://youtu.be/akdgif0QOkQ?t=252

(You know it's the halloween event because Lanys T`Vyl is there: https://youtu.be/akdgif0QOkQ?t=256)

This confirms the timeline for the pet size/color change, imo. It's all in order and matches the patch note timeline exactly.

I will keep looking to see if I can get examples of mage pet size.

There is a mage earth pet size example from the same vox raid with the white necro pets. Comparing it to the size of the low level mage pets in the beta screenshots, I think they are both exactly the same.

They all had pets when I checked on green.

Nilbog told me a few weeks ago that he was making a code fix to have them summon pets, since they should have been summoning them all along apparently. Might just want to ping him to see if that went in or not, to avoid duplication of effort.
