View Full Version : Can we rethink the no custom UI

I'm all for limiting the functionality of the UI to what it was at launch. I'm ok with only one hotbutton window, no pet window etc.

But, removing custom UI's is a mistake in my opinion. I'm playing on a monitor that's 4x the resolution of what I was using when the game launched, and i'm having a hard time reading the text in some windows. (my eyes are 20 years older than they were when i first played)

I remember having pages of social's specific to certain situations (soloing, grouping, corpse run etc). This was necessary because we only had one hot button window. Now, the action window is so small, it's very difficult to use.

Is it not possible to lock the functionality of the interface but still allow us to customize the windows available to us?

Is allowing a player a custom UI going to give them a great advantage over other players, or hurt other players enjoyment of the game?

you can use /chatfontsize 1-5 to adjust text in windows as needed to help with at least one of your problems.

Be hardcore. Get a second hand crappy monitor with low resolution. Thanks for the idea, now I must do this.

bad UI is ok. I definitely hate the fact that you can't slide the slider to full opacity without changing each window to a custom color.

But its ok

Fully agree. We should have the option to edit the appearance without changing any functionality.

I want my 1 action bar in a line instead of a rectangle, and I want my spell bar horizontal. I want to edit the size of the windows so I can actually see them.

Forced UI isn't classic so that argument is invalid imo.

That works for chat windows, but you can't do that on the hotbar window, action window etc

I don't have an opinion on the forced UI issue. I simply just worked on improving what was being forced upon people.

What do you mean Forced UI wasn't classic lol.

You had:
A) Full Stone UI
B) F10 Partila UI
C) No UI

Are these the non-forced UI you are talking about lol?

I'm just saying there were 2 options back then, why can't we follow suit now? Having the choice to use a 1x6 horizontal action bar instead of a 2x3 one would make a lot of people happy and all these UI complaint posts would probably stop. Meet people in the middle.

1x6 was never an option.

You are literally requesting a UI that did not exist during timeline. You are asking for something very strangely specific.

So very wrong and suspect trolling.

It was absolutely forced. You had the stone UI that could be toggled to Full Screen and later the Velious UI that was full screen. You didn't have custom UI's during this era. Everyone played using the same, if you doubt this then I would suggest you find some screenshots taken between 1999 and 2001 that shows such. You will not find any.

Also while we are at it,

Parse to Visual aids were not in era, Parse to Voice were. That is why you find no screenshots. You couldn't put EQ in a windowed mode. It was forced full screen for everyone and the UI that shipped with the game.

Voice chat was not in era. True there were voice chat programs such as RogerWilco but Everquest had a performance loop that used all of the computers resources. You couldn't run an additional program in era with a single core CPU (core 2 duo didn't release until years later in the mid 2000s). It wasn't until around 2003 that guys became aware of this and started working on fixes to solve the performance loop problem.

Some quick and important information about EQ [12.12.2003]

As many of you know, EverQuest is a horrible CPU hog. As fewer of you know, it doesn't need to be. EverQuest currently fights furiously with your computer to eat every possible nanosecond of CPU processing time. This is very bad for your system overall. For example, your CPU is generating much more heat than it should be, and can cause rampant overheating. Other applications are bullied around like school children giving up lunch money (including system drivers, for things like winmodems -- this prevents winmodem users from even PLAYING the game). What needs to happen, you ask? Very simple. As discovered and mentioned through more questionable methods, EverQuest has a "main loop", where it processes everything needed for EverQuest to function. It is this loop that runs continuously that refuses to yield the CPU even for necessary system functionality. The EQ dev team could insert the line "Sleep(0);" into the loop at any point, and this would give up enough CPU time for the system to function properly, without giving up any of your framerate. This would allow you to open up your web browser without it taking 10 minutes, it would allow winmodem users to play the game, etc. Furthermore, allowing an option to reduce CPU time by increasing the amount of Sleep would be extremely beneficial for overheating and power usage. This Sleep also drastically reduces many forms of lag in the game, and actually allows you to run multiple sessions of EverQuest on the same computer much more smoothly. As an EverQuest player you should be concerned about EverQuest playing nice with your system. Post on the EverQuest station boards, contact your GM, email SOE, do what needs to be done for them to read this message and give a little back to your computer for all the hard work it has done playing the game :)

There was no such thing as 2x3. The toggled full screen had the same amount of hotbar spaces as the viewport stone ui. The later expansion raised the hotbar amount to 10. There were never double hotbars. You are confusing this with the titanium UI that blue had which was not classic. This only stayed in game for as long as it did as the developers (small team and passion project) were focused on getting other things taken care of first.
