I still have fun playing EQ, of course, and I’m not freaking out over any name, but I would like to exert an influence on the server in the direction in which I would like it to go. Making the original post will have the effect of encouraging those who value the naming rules and perhaps discouraging those who would flout them. I hope others will also petition bad names. Then it will be up to the staff.

Let the call go out: petition names that violate the naming policy on Green, Teal, Blue, and Red. Do not post the contents of your petition publicly. Just make a list and give it to the GMs and be patient.

I have a little note document where I list bad names so I can deliver them to staff in a batch of 10-100.

I imagine staff change the racist/homophobic/offensive names first, then, if they have time, they go to other stuff like titles and sentences.

I started my Dark Elf Rogue sometime during Kunark (2000ish) and made it to level 50 a few months after Velious came out. Despite playing since March 1999, I had never leveled a character past 20. But I stuck with this Rogue, joined a guild for the first time, made a ton of friends in and out of the guild. Not one mention of my name ever.

Then one day in LGuk, I privately sent someone a tell kindly asking to go elsewhere that my group was at some camp that he kept taking mobs from. This jackass petitioned my name and some guide came in and renamed my character. So after 42 days /played I was renamed from Ravenprince Levantine to Ravenpride Levantine. I will say this, after that many days /played with that name, it made a difference to me.

I'm all for name policy, but I am a bit more careful naming my character now. At the time I created Ravenprince, I did not realize title could not be in the name. Thanks for the clarification on the naming policy.

Use the Petition forum, which is private to you and staff. Staff frown on publicly posting the contents of a petition.

There are two ways. You can send a list in a petition to the staff. They'll pick through it and keep an eye out for ones that actually violate the naming policy. Like I saw a DE necro with miss spelled nword on day. They got him within an hour. The other way is to report people as you see them in game with /petition.

There are some name violations I don’t mind, and even some I like. Each of us must choose where to draw the line. You are welcome to petition only vulgar names, or none at all. If everyone petitions the worst 1% of the bad names they see, we’ll have a more fantastic Norrath.

This is what bothers me more than the non-immersive names. Majority I’ve seen are just lazy as shit and boring. Rogue = Stabby McPiercer. Cleric= Nores Foryou. Enchanter = Enchantyress. If I see one of these LFG, it’ll take a lot for me to even want to send them a tell.

Compound names are ok - even in first names - as long as they don't violate other rules, like this one:

Common words and phrases that would not be found in the time, place and setting of EverQuest (e.g. Switchblade, Phaser, Toaster, Cannabis).

To clarify, there is no rule saying we can't use compound words in names. We are allowed to use and combine real words in our names (like my character Seaglass). They just can't be sentences or titles.

The case went up, if i recall correctly, to the supreme court and they ruled that the first amendment allows people to burn, trample etc flags as a freedom of speech issue. This entire thread is a troll. This guy is not a GM. The rules are already posted, everyone knows them. Nothing new is learned.

The excuse for wanting to rp is not even remotely believable.

Are you projecting? You are trying to PVP with me, but I'm not interested. I don't feel a need to convince you of my motives, but I do feel I should deny your accusations because they are false. I am not bored, I am not trolling, I am not out to dismay or frighten other players.

My true motivations are thus. People with inappropriate names make Norrath less immersive. I don't like traveling through Norrath and seeing these names that are offensive, inappropriate, or worst of all, uncreative. That's why I highlighted these rules. What I hoped to achieve with this thread is for fewer people to make names that go against the naming policy.

And yes, the rules are already posted, and tons of people are not following them. Why don't you get after those people instead of me? They're the problem.

Lastly, I posted rules that had already been posted 10 years ago by the staff of the server both of us play on. If you don't like the rules, take it up with the staff.

People usually don't get banned for having a name that goes against the naming policy. They just log in to find their name changed. Then they petition for a name change and pick a cooler name. If your monk got banned, it may have been for something else.

The Naming Policy is classic, and recreating classic is the point of the server.

The following types of names are considered unacceptable:

• Forenames containing titles within them, such as, but not limited to: The, Lord, Lady, Master, King, Knight, Sir, Father (e.g. Sirtallon, Lordeagle, Mothermaggy, Darksister).

• Names that contain sentences (Ikillorcs), phrases (Ontop), or two or more words that do not form descriptive compound words (Petcarbob, Diediedie and Tablechair).

• Names where the combination of the first and last name forms a phrase or violates a previous rule (e.g. Crymea River, Bran Muffin, Story Thyme).

Might as well not make characters with names that violate these rules so you don't get an annoying name change later!
