From another thread got me thinking:

I honestly haven't been this excited about a game since FF7.

https://www.project1999.com/index.php?pageid=donations

I'd like to know what everyone's most anticipated releases were. Like in all your history of gaming from day one, what title(s) did you get all excited about the most?

I'll start and date myself. Doom II, meh. Quake II, so awesome. Fallout 4, big letdown.

Red Server.

Every mmo post eq (and all were mostly a let down).

Evolve (super let down on that, turned me off $60 triple aaa titles).

Mount and Blade 2 (not yet out).

Biggest hype though? Star Citizen. Like 4 years ago I spent hundreds of dollars on a warthog joystick, thruster, some pedals and a $70 ship in star citizen. Still hyped 4 years later. Oh, and when it launches I’ll still need to buy 2 cheap ass joysticks cause can’t dogfight with the warthog, but it will be super immersive!

Biggest was EQ Live. Hands down. I'd been following development for a pretty long time, managed to get a beta access code for P4. Shadowbane and Vanguard... not sure how excited I was, but I bought them and was promptly very disappointed.

Before that? Probably The Perfect General 2. I would be so happy if somebody could convince that to run under modern windows (not too hard, runs on Dosbox) with modern multiplayer(it has native support for null modems and dialup peer-to-peer).

Star Wars: The Old Republic a.k.a. Tortanic

With all the CGI movies (which I still love to this day), the hype was beyond real. It's the game that broke my heart more than any other in my 34 years of gaming.

I've been mostly amped for MMOs over the years. UO, EQ, AO, SWG, DaoC, WoW. After that I really haven't cared about other MMOs much. I still mostly play what many would call "retro games" when I don't play MMOs and remasters do nothing for me.

100% Agree! I cannot wait for Mount and Blade 2!!! I'm so hyped for that game, I'm constantly trolling youtube for any gameplays I can find lol

Only ever really got super hyped and did pregaming with MMORPGs. Shadowbane and Darkfall Online were two of the ones I went the hardest on. Both were kind of shit, but Darkfall was so bad that I learned my lesson and never got my hopes up for an MMO again. I did make the mistake of backing Crowfall recently though.

Fallout 3 was by far the most excited I've ever been for a release.
Morrowind was a close second.
Then Pokemon Yellow as a third.
Fallout 76 doesn't deserve an honorable mention but I'll give it to anyways.

It's lost to the sands of time, buried by more relevant results.

Everyone remembers Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning?

Well that was not the first Warhammer MMO under development.

There was an earlier project, funded by Games Workshop, also under the working title of 'Warhammer Online'. It never released.

The developers snorted up the funds, demanding more and more. They made some really beautiful renderings, encouraging Games Workshop to string them along. Creepy, winding Tudor style streets, underlain by a maze of sewers permeated by evil Skaven - rats that had gnawed on magical, mutagenic warpstone. There was never any actual content put forward. No mechanics.

Eventually Games Workshop bailed.

It is this experience which has made me distant when it comes to developments. All sorts of interesting games -EQ Nexts, Pantheons, Vanguards - being strung along to various stages of development, or even released massively incomplete, only to be eventually pulled.

Honestly, I didn't play many other MMORPGs as I couldn't garner interest in them (I did play various iterations of SWG and played CoH/CoV - we are blessed how long p1999 has ran).

Early Access - it can be fun! Getting to find bugs and get them cleared out before the public release. That's what I thought about the Mordheim computer game.

Me and my friend, were big fans of the tabletop version of Mordheim and were excited to be able to play remotely via a computer game and bought straight into early access.

We were hanging out at one or the other's house (I can't remember whose) and messed around in single player, getting a feel for the game and establishing our warbands until we were comfortable enough to play multiplayer.

In the multiplayer we were looking at each others screens and were alarmed. Completely different things were being shown on each screen. Different damages being done to the same guy in each instance. Eventually one of the guys was killed in one client, but was still alive in the other client. The game was becoming massively desynced, and we would never have known if we weren't sat next to each other.

We submitted our findings, waited for something to be done about it. Never did anything official seem to come out. A couple of times we'd visit each other, load up the game and try it again, and desync would again be an issue. Sometimes the desync would become a hang.

I gave up on it and didn't play multiplayer again, rarely playing single player because my enthusiasm for the game had been murdered.

I can't remember a game I've been psyched for that hasn't been a disappointment tbh.

Heroes of Might and magic 3
StarCraft Broodwars
Ocarina of Time
Marvel vs Capcom 2
Everquest Luclin expansion
Day of Defeat Source
Company of Heroes
The Red Alert series
Armored Core 2 and 3
Air Combat Series

There are more but that's good enough.

Everquest. A friend's parents were in the beta and they hyped the game to anyone that would listen. My dad got me a computer because I kept chattering about this game. I've been excited about a few other releases, but none nearly as much as I was about Everquest. I guess second place would be Diablo 3. I learned from that experience to never be excited about a video game.

World of Warcraft I'm afraid. I was pretty jaded with EQ at this point and had seen all the hype on FoH from the US beta. I was so excited I actually pre-ordered a US copy of the game. On the day it arrived I got an email from Blizzard telling me I'd been accepted into the European beta so never actually activated the US copy, I've still got it gathering dust somewhere.

Quake II was awesome indeed. Also, Half-Life. I'd read about it, went to the store (Electronics Boutique I'm guessing?), saw it on the shelf and the guy working there just said "Buy it". No explanation, just "buy it." He was right, no explanation was necessary. That shit was groundbreaking.

The Orange Box was pretty awesome. I played TF2 in the open beta, and was happy to pay for something I already knew was awesome. I played the living shit out of TF2.

I was actually really buzzed for EQ2, and greatly enjoyed it. I actually did swap to WoW though, for hardware reasons (EQ2 was just a BUNCH of mistakes glued together.. .but it was fun on release!)

After that, I was hyped for the WoW: Cataclysm expansion... boy that was a disappointment.

And then it was Overwatch... I've moved on to Paladins since though, since Blizzard has decided that only eugenically-bred designer gamer Korean teenagers should be allowed to play their game.

Everquest 2 was the first game I got super excited for. I spent thousands of dollars on the parts and built myself a new rig and I played it for less than two weeks.

Other games I was excited for and they flopped were:
Metal Gear Solid 2
Final Fantasy 8
Vanguard: Saga of Heroes
World of Warcraft: Classic

All the games above were complete let-downs to me. So at this point, I try not to get too excited about a game, but I know what I am in store for with green because this is the 3rd time I am starting on an EQ server fresh!

I loved these games sl much. But I didn't know about releases before they happened back then so j wasn't hyped.

WOTLK xpac was probably my biggest hype. I was fully into wow at the time.

I was hyped for Eq2. Was burnt out of playing EQ1. Bought myself a new computer and loved how they allowed you to play with character creation with. I was the first lvl 50 and then 60 on my server (SK).

I was super-hyped for Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. I think I didn't play past my first free month. I still think it had a ton of potential, but it was rushed and incomplete.

I was super-hyped for Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.

I really liked that one! It was the first game I thought that finally balanced out the combat healer. I liked so many things about that game and the world had a real nice feel for me and was disappointed when it folded rather quickly.

Several people mentioned Red Alert and now I really want to play it again. The music and the cutscenes were so awesome! Hell March!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SQVvfFTcEk

Lord of the Rings Online. Actually spent the $200 to get the lifetime account. Played it for years, and still log in every now and again when feeling nostalgic.

Biggest disappointment was The Division 2. WAY too much grinding only to be screwed over by the rng. Quit playing after about a month, and interacting with the people there led me to purge my “friends” list and drop XBox Gold entirely.

It definitely did a lot of things right. I loved the class design in particular. It's just a shame they rushed it out with large areas devoid of any content. I think if they had been given time to finish it, it could have been something special.

Now I want to check out the progress on the Vanguard emulator. I know someone was working on one.

Vanguard was the best MMO ever made. It just contained about 300 hours total of content.

The Disciple and Blood Mage classes were AMAZING. Also I loved the graft system for Necro pets.

First purchases were original EQ, UT99 and Janes WW2 Fighters.

My first anticipated release was Ruins of Kunark because I was into EQ, I didn't anticipate Velious but I did pre-order it. Everything else I would find in the store.

Dark Age of Camelot & Shadowbane. I was into MMORPGs at the time and these looked like the next EQs. (they weren't)

The next memorable one was Bioshock, STEAM was doing a pre-download thing and the guys at Hardforum were riding the hype train. Beat the game, didn't play it twice.

When I think back on it all the games were pretty much already out in stores by the time I took notice. Box pics look interesting, ok I will buy it. No waiting and a "finished" game. The definition of a finished game becomes confused post 2010.

Edit: Erased STEAM/digital stores & launchers awhile back. Since PC gaming is reduced to digital download only it means I don't purchase new games. I have no further anticipations.

Although the people that play it nowadays are massively better than the opponents I was used to in the 90's. I'll still be constructing my first barracks and get instantly defeated by MIGs.

You can even import the original music files etc if you have them.
