Have tried this a few times now, relogged and tested it again to make sure:
You can open up his merchant window, and close it, but if you try and sell him anything it immediately bugs out and you can't ESC out of any UI window and inventory stops working etc.
Repeatedly opening and closing trade without trying to sell works fine however.
