I remember this always being a thing. Hence Befallen was my favorite zone forever.. Even as a higher lvl would come back and PL people and helped them escape the pit traps:)

If you don't care about race be a halfling for the bonus.

Don't be a large race for the negative bonus.

Its easy to travel
