View Full Version : Too Old To Play What I Want

Is anyone else in this situation? I don't have the time to play what I want to play, so I am a little upset, but I have still come to terms with the fact that I just don't have the time to play what I want to play.
For example: I have always wanted to play a Rogue. The issue with them is that they are highly group dependant and I will be out-leveled by the population of Green quickly due to the amount of playtime I will have.
Due to that, my choice in classes is minimized to the classes that can group and can solo, leaving out some of the more interesting classes in this era of the game.
Anyone else?
Green will not all level up in one massive cohort. Within weeks you will see toons in every level range.
Making sure you can both solo and group is always a flexible position to be in. The difference between soloing for slow XP for an hour versus looking for a group for that hour is huge.

I feel ya -- however, I don't think you should be worried about being "out-leveled." Maybe by the first wave of power gamers/raiders, but I think there will always be people to group with at lower-mid levels, especially in Najena, Uguk, and Blackburrow/CB. Even if it's just the power gamers getting their alts jboots by the time you ding 25 :)
The thing about groups, though, rings true to me. That limits my class selections for sure, as my life doesn't really allow for more than 45 mins or so of playtime at once.

I don't think being out-leveled by everyone is going to be a very big issue.

Remember Level max is 50, so you will eventually get it by teh time the level gets increased to 60.

I feel ya man!
I am going to only have the energy to play alot Friday and Saturday and a little Sunday, then I am back to my few hours a night max and enjoy the journey to 50 over a long period of time. Several months I am sure. But this time I will have plenty of time before Kunark and then Velious and feel like I am part of the world.
When you start blue awhile after Kunark and every other player is a twink it just feels different. I expect this time to be a completely different thing and not be repetitive at all.

I wanted to play a rogue as my first choice too but I'm forced to play a class I can solo with when needed. Some of my playtime is when I am required to be afk at a moments notice so group play won't work.
People will make alts and level at all different speeds though. I wouldn't make a choice based on your play time. It is more about what you can and want to do with the time you have to play.

I was debating between Druid and Paladin for this reason. Druid has so many conveniences and solos well so it'd be ideal for my limited playtime. And doesn't have that horrid experience penalty.
But in the end my desire to play the class I really wanted to play won out. If I'm a lowbie forever, so be it. I've been way more excited for Green since I decided to say "screw it" and go with Paladin.

I get that. My play time is usually limited also. I got to 20 on testgreen and just started handing out orc belts and stuff when i had time to play for few. I'm mainly thankful just for the chance to play EQ in 2019 and beyond.

Man, you got all the time in the world. Even if you only have one afternoon a week to dedicate to EQ you’ll be max level in no time.

IMO the less play time you have the more group dependent you should be. Because if you can solo and can't find a group right away you'll go solo. And eventually you'll just be soloing all the time because people gravitate to the path of least resistance. If you need a group you'll spend some more time looking for one, but the play time you do get will be a lot more social and that goes a long way towards keeping you happy and playing long term.

Now, more than ever, is the time you need to play the class you want to play. This type of experience is few and far between.

I bet the demographic age for those interested in Classic Everquest is like 35-55. In the Wikipedia entry one of the studies (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game) cited says:
The average gamer is 30 years old and has been playing for 12 years. Eighty-two percent of gamers are 18 years of age or older.
Forty-two percent of all players are women and women over 18 years of age are one of the industry's fastest growing demographics.
Twenty-nine percent of game players are over the age of 50, an increase from nine percent in 1999.
%29 of gamers are over 50 years old haha....

Then I was too old at 18 working full time to power game. Computer and 85 300zx wasn't going to pay for theirselves.

Nah! Just pug as a rogue! Dude you will love it!
It's the most chill class, super fun and easy to get groups!! Maybe 20 mins of waiting around, chatting, sneeking around doing fun stuff just enjoying the view, then a pug group where you just stand around and stab!
You can get tons of fun STR gear, and also go for fashion! A good dagger goes a long way!
Wear some cool armor! :D
I play my rogue with a XBOX controller and it works great!

I know. I just thought people would realize that the older you get, the more responsibility you obtain, and that is the real issue.

Yea, I understood it. It was more just about not having the copious amounts of free time to play all the time that a lot of us did in 1999. Or even really wanting to spend that much time in a game.
I think there's enough people in this boat that you won't be outleveled, though, and you'll be able to find groups throughout Green's lifetime. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if this was the norm.
Why not join a guild and play with people when you can since it's not a race to the end. I only played back at launch and never made it past lvl 26 but had a blast so I don't see why I can't do the same again.

You guys did make me feel a lot better about this. However, I have never even started a rogue before, so I don't know much about them, meaning this will be a 100 fresh new experience for me if I do it.
That being said, does anyone have any pointers for a new rogue? I take it I shouldn't go Barbarian because they will be blind forever and the darkness on green is for real, for real!
I don't think I should go human, but not because of the night blindness, but because of the fact that I have seen more players ask how to get to the rogue guild in Freeport than any other question in the starter zone.

There's no age requirements, but you must own a beard IRL to play a shaman.

Rogues are very easy. Stat priority is strength. You want the highest damage piercer you can get your hands on for backstab. Barbarian is a min/max class, halfling is decent stats with little higher exp bonus, dwarf is slightly behind barbarian but smaller and can see better I guess. I would pick between those 3 unless you just really like how another race looks. I would probably pick wood elf just for that reason. Rogues are probably the easiest class you can play so you don't need much advice. You stand behind the mobs and backstab, evade every time hide ability is up to reduce aggro. That is it.

Pick the race you like best, seriously. I made the mistake of choosing a barb for min/max thinking I'd always be in DE form. I hated barb and was jealous every time I saw a cool little sneaky pirate gnome. I stuck it out, levelled up, got my epic but eventually abandoned the barb because it just didn't feel right. Play what you like.

We have a full year until Kunark even comes out, I don't really see a reason not to start out planning on having a more group reliant character and a more solo friendly character. When you have more time and/or can quickly get into a group with the rogue then play the rogue, when you have less time or you sit for a little bit and can't find anything hop on the more solo capable character.

I only play gnomish rogues and it works fine, their high INT makes for good tradeskilling like tinkering and much faster increase of many other skills :) You should pick what you think is cool, whiile STR is the primary stat it's not everything.
A tip is to start practicing pickpocketing as soon as you get it but tell your group about it and be the main looter for them so you don't steal their share. :) Once you get the skill up you can pickpocked giants and get rich. ;)

Not sure if too old is the issue here, but for me it's time blocks.
I don't have 4+ hours to commit to groups anymore, and if the run to them alone takes 30min (plus 30min to get out), that really limits my time.
Often times I'm in 1-2 hour blocks.
So yeah, same boat - I love Rogue, Ranger, etc., but probably not my best choices as I could find myself soloing for 30+min easily just while waiting for a group, which eats up half my play time.

I don't think you will be outleveled. Not everybody is going to play 24/7.

Too old? Sho nuff.
I'm too old to put up with players who are talking about bands that I've never heard of and calling them golden oldies.
I'm too old to stay focused on healing a group so cleric is out for me and shaman/druid are dps.
Now I need a nap.

Play what you like is the best advice. It's not a silly cliché, it's a hard lesson learned.
When you have limited playtime, there's a couple things you can do to help yourself. Since traveling is a thing in classic EQ, you can plan your week out; Monday night travel from Faydwer to Antonica, get a bind in Freeport, and get to upper guk. Tuesday through Thursday night lfg in guk. Friday night travel to CT, log off early and spend time with RL people. Saturday spend all day in CT. :)
Seriously, it's a second chance at Eden. Play what you like.
cheers,

This is EXACTLY the time for you to play a rogue. Lots of us are 20 years older than we were 20 years ago. Lots of us have more responsibility and less playtime than we did 20 years ago.

Play the character you like.
If you think you will NEVER group because you will always only be able to play for 30 mins to an hour than be a class that can solo. Log on, blast some mobs, afk med and log off.
Or a good solo class like necro or druid that can be max efficient for that limited time.
Roguing it up is tough if you can only kill 1 mob per 30 mins.

I do remember on live before mercenary those people playing cleric and going afk very often I think that's why mercenary came but there's classes that can go afk more and people wouldn't care much so choose a class that can go afk example people are use to see wiz sitting to get mana back a lot so that would be one I think bard going afk while playing their ballad can work too.

I read this and have to hope that you’re under estimating the amount of new players this server might bring. I think the power level rush group will be mostly people who already play blue. There are bound to be a lot of other people ( like myself ) who wouldn’t step foot on blue, but are coming back for green. I gotta think those are mostly the non hardcore crowd, or we’d already be on blue.
