There is no way I'm going to let you use my credit card details to pay another $10 a month. I already paid for the game once, this is an obvious scam. We're taking the disc back to the store tomorrow for a refund and we'll get you some other game with your birthday money.

I'm not sure how my parents ever tolerated eq as much as they did. I was in high school, paid for the game myself every month, but they definitely ended up with a second phone line for the modem the I never paid for. And then I just used the normal line to call my irl buddy while we were playing anyway.

They probably loved it because you stayed in your room and left them the hell alone.

Kid playing EQ was a free ticket to the bone zone for parents (not field of bone.... except that one time).

You know what else was going on in 1999? The internet bubble! VCs were throwing giant bucketloads of money at every shady pre-ebitda scam and I was lucky enough to get in. For the first time in my life I had more money then I knew what to do with. So obviously I invested in the fastest connection I could and had multiple subscriptions to everything. Those were the three best years of my life before it all came crashing down and I had to live under a bridge like a troll.

Started playing EQ late 99 > Little Sister was born late the next year... Seems Legit.

Calling AOL every week for months on end to cancel your account while they keep charging you monthly fees for service you haven't used in half a year. Classic.

I like to pretend my parents have never had sex. Stop it.

Some things are starting to become more clear.

I grew up in Silicon Valley, think I had cable modem well before Kunark. Was so baller. I had a job and a credit card for most of Kunark, so I just had to make sure I didn’t piss parents off too much.

I also knew a bug for free gameplay, which I’m almost ashamed to say I exploited a lot. Bug actually existed from release through to Luclin at least...

My parents looked at it as.. Well I guess it's better for him to be addicted to games than to be addicted to drugs...

Were they right, though. I frankly don't see the difference some days.

Tell us about the bug!

It was so simple, from launch til SoL (I think), account stuff was handled within the client. Account creation, payment and password changes were all in there. All you had to do was change your password (on your unpaid account) and there would be some window in which you could log in without paying. Once logged in to (or past) server select there were no checks for subscription, so it would never boot you off.

So classic =D

This. And then by late high school they were like “Look, it’s fine, go do some drugs with friends! Give this a break!”

Haha. I was in my twenties during the original EQ days so I had my own apartment. But man I remember that slow dialup modem making that terrrible sound every time I had to log into EQ. I also remember many a black screen with the words:

YOU HAVE BEEN DISCONNECTED

Then I got the bug so bad I bought a second computer with monitor, went to cable internet and paid for a second account so I could 2-box. All I actually wanted was to be able to have a Druid on one account and a cleric on the other. That way my Cleric always had a port and sow and my Druid always had a rez.

It was AWESOME!

Dial up (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpjWLUaosj4) sound was exciting. Like harddrive spin (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpSfgusep7s) it meant your computer was doing something.. something was about to happen.

I remember almost getting 30th trimester aborted by my parents because the something went wrong with the Dialup, and somehow I ended up connecting it via long distance and gave them a pretty hefty bill for a couple months.

Once I explained I had to get on Everquest, they still were enraged!

Did anyone else's dial-up modem make a "click" sound when it disconnected? I remember hearing that mid-kite like, "No, no, no, no , no! NOT NOW!"

I'm reasonable certain I've shared this before. Here's me playing back then. Compaq Presario, Billabong t-Shirt, dial-up internet, and that sweet wallpaper.

I'm still impressed that my 14 year old self was able to convince my mom to do this. She never even told my dad, because she knew he wouldn't approve. She just took the money out of my allowance.
