Unsure when this is added and I am bad at research, but at release we didn't actually know what mobs had what faction hits.

Also added a message that will let you know when you can no longer gain or lose faction with a certain group. It will say:
Your faction standing with could not possibly get any worse.
or
Your faction standing with could not possibly get any better.

The faction messages were either in at launch or very shortly after. Here's a post from March 30th 1999 talking about them.

Here's another post from Phase 3 beta talking about faction messages in the chat box. So all signs point to this being in game from the start, you're just remembering wrong.

Looks like I'm wrong. It must have been broken for awhile and then fixed in early April, according to this post it was an undocumented change:

I'll edit the title for this, just not sure devs will incorporate.

I also interpreted this as quest faction was fine, just killing mobs that was broke.

If they do choose to implement, probably want to know if faction was truly being adjusted from kills or not.

Not sure I'd want them to tbh. I don't think replicating that level of brokenness is worth it for one month.

Was the "fix/patch" about not getting faction hits?

Or not displaying faction hits for killing?


Should be easy to check forum post history about people killing in upper guk without becoming KOS,

March '99. This guy must have been in at least the open beta. highly suggests the faction hits were working.

"Any SENTIENT thing you kill in game will adjust factions.
SOME non-sentient things adjust factions as well (I think I
remember seeing factions adjusted with some non-sentients)."

Unsure if it was broken or not implemented. I didn’t play until P4 and there were no faction hits explicitly displayed then.

Very typical for druids and rangers to refuse to kill animals because they thought they’d lose their animal faction, etc. etc.

I recall it being a pretty early fix as well, but not at launch. Not sure how much it matters since we all know all of the factions hits now anyways.
