View Full Version : Spells: Full audit of class spells for timeline correctness (all casting classes)

I audited all the following classes for the classicness of their spell lineups in the Vanilla timeline, using new patch history resources I've discovered and added to the wiki in recent days.

It's presented in "diff" format. -Spell means the spell is removed, +Spell means it's added, evidence is provided below each entry in the form of an URL.

The formatting here sucks. Let me know if this isn't readable enough.

Class -> Spell Circle -> Change -> Evidence, is the hierarchy.

Edit: Text file provided if it's easier.

Oh one comment on Necros and Dead Man Walking because I didn't get it quite right.

This is the old Lich spell. In September 1999 it loses its skeleton illusion and Mana conversion properties (check 1999 yellow disk spdat.eff to see what they were), and gains a levitation component. It is renamed to DMF and it is replaced by Lich at 49.

And to confirm this, Allure of Death does NOT turn you into skeletal form, though once rumored to do so. A later upgrade called dead man walking will do so.

Sorry for bumping, edit timer has expired. Another thing to add.

The Enchanter spell Mesmerization (AoE) was originally a "hang in the area" type of spell, like Sentinel. This was not changed until this patch in July 1999:

- Mesmerization (ENCHANTER) has been changed to a straight AOE radius spell - it will no longer hang in the area. The AOE radius has been increased, as has the range.

https://wiki.project1999.com/Patch_Notes#July_13.2C_1999_Test_Server_patch

I imagine the old yellow disc spdat.eff would have the info.

Amazing work!

Ah and does this mean Mesmerization used to be AoE centered around the caster?

I *think* it hung around the target of the spell. But that is just from memory.

Based on this interview with GZ, I am wrong about Circle of Death. It was put into the game in June 1999 in a broken state, then fixed in July. It was then renamed to Bond of Death.

Necros should not have this spell prior to June/July 1999 and it should not be researchable until September 1999.

http://web.archive.org/web/20000303015420/eq.stratics.com/forums/hall/messages/93083616313520.shtml

I am still unsure of what if anything this spell replaced at 49 or if it was an entirely new addition to the class. I see references to LifetapAEIV whatever that is.

It was an AoE lifetap on a longish cooldown that was pretty useless on a non-pvp server. I suppose for farming greens it would be useful on a non-PvP server too. paired with the word series it gave them mediocre AoE potential.

I suppose you aren't mentioning missing charm lines since it's been covered quite a bit already?

there are some spelllines that change their function quite significantly but retain their names and level placements. like enchanters DD saving as all or nothing, which makes it resist a helluva a lot more because it already has a stun and DD component and double effect spells already have large resist rates. Add an all or nothing save on top, and it was often a terrible waste of mana 90% of the time.

The tashan series resisted at about the same rate as other debuff spells.

Magicians damage shield line used to hit a decent bit harder but they lasted an extremely short time. they eventually were moved to being close to similar to druid damage shields.

I suppose I've started to mix up my purpose in this thread. It started out as a simple "when did classes gain and lose spells?" and then drifted into also "when did spells change significantly?"

It's hard to do a list like this and not drift into the latter tbh.

I found a very nice post on EQNecros explaining the necro changes.

-->B. lvl 29 Vampiric Wave - AOE lifetap
-->E. lvl 49 Lifetap AOE
-->Removed as it made us too powerful
These spells were not removed for that reason. In fact, they were never removed at all. These spells never made it into the game. The game went live and these spells still weren't functional. You could scribe them into your book, but nothing would happen if you cast em. Eventually, Verant got around to them, but changed them to Lifetap-DoT spells before they ever went live. Personally, I think they are much better than AOE Lifetaps anyway.

-->D. Dead man walking
-->Changed to floating
True this did happen, but it was at the request of the Necromancers. Gasp! Yep, you heard me right. DMW's fourth effect was a fatigue regen. Since you were done meleeing by the time you got this spell, it seemed really pointless to have this effect, even though it was in-character for the undead to never get tired. The Necro community really wanted to be able to levitate, so we reasoned that levitating was kinda undead-ish, as ghost/spectres/wraiths/etc. float around. So, Verant actually changed the spell, and renamed it, and all because we asked them too! Imagine that, Verant actually listened to Necros back then.

-->F. Umbral Messenger
-->Never could get it to work. Removed it.
This is not correct at all. UM was a level 16 Necro spell, that worked just fine. The bad part is, it was ALSO a level 5 Druid spell by the name of Winged Courier. Now, being as old as I am, I don't quite remember if this happened during beta, or very shortly after public, but I definately remember WHAT happened. At that time, very few people were level 16, but there were plenty of level 5's. So when I logged in one day to see the message that both of these spells were being removed because people were abusing them, I knew right away it was the Druids that were doing it, as there just weren't enough level 16 Necros around to be to blame. I never did find out how people were abusing these spells though, as just as is their policy to this very day, they don't say HOW the abuse happened, just that it did. I bring all this up for historical reasons, as several of the nerfs we recieved later were because some other class found a way to ubuse something, and Necros happened to share that ability, so we got indirectly nerfed, but nerfed nonetheless. Incidently, neither Umbral Messenger nor Winged Courier were ever replaced by other spells. Given Verant's current ability to carefully define the parameters of spells, I bet it would be easy for them to put the spells back in the game and take away whatever property made them abusable, but alas, this will probably never happen.

Now as far as the removal of Charm and Beguile, this is quite true, but as was pointed out we were given Screaming Terror instead. And although it is also quite true that ST was really screwed up when it was first introduced into the game, and it STILL doesn't work as it originally was intended to, I still prefer it to Charm and Beguile, as the level limits of those spells compared to the levels we got them made them pretty much just fluff. ST, even in its current state, actually is quite useful comparetively.

So all in all, A-E is really a list of _good_ things that Verant has done for the Necromancer class. F is the only one listed there where we really got screwed over. Now, since I'm playing the venerable ol' historian here, I may as well point out that at one time, we also had a spell at level 4 called Corpse Bomb. Yep, way before Diablo II had it, EQ had Corpse Bomb! Well, kinda. CB never actually made it into the game, even though it was on Verant's spell lists. It's really too bad we don't have this spell. maybe then we would have a way to be useful on raids? [evil grin]

/pet attack
Necro casts corpse bomb.
Jobober explodes sending bone fragments flying in all directions, causing 2400 points of damage to your target!

[sigh] Beats the hell out of twitching. [Hangs his head in shame thinking about what Necros have become, compared to what they could have been.]

http://web.archive.org/web/20010730185249/necro.eqclasses.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5253&FORUM_ID=1&CAT_ID=1&Topic_Title=You+know+you+are+an+old+necro+if...&Forum_Title=General+Discussions

So basically, the level 29 and 49 lifetaps should be broken until June/July, when they are fixed and renamed, and finally Circle of Death should be renamed again to Bond of Death in August/September 1999.

There is also an explanation for how the 16th nec spell Umbral Messenger / 5th dru spell Winged Messenger worked, didn't know about that one.

Just to clarify things a little further. Umbral Messenger was long gone way before the message delivery/bard guild quests were in the game. (And as far as Necros were concerned, these bards are just convenient mobs to kill anyway [grin].) But either way, I think your point was that quests like this would be too easy. However, Umbral Messenger only worked in the same zone you are in, and it also only worked between players. So I think the exploit _probably_ was really more of a harassment thing. Unexpected and unwanted trade windows popping up and that sort of thing. This really was more or less just a fluff spell anyway [cough-voice graft-cough], so we really didn't loose anything from its removal. Would be fun to try to talk Verant into giving it back to us though, but with our balance issues, it can certainly wait.

I think that guy might be mixing up memories from beta with early release. Umbral messenger wasn't in release. And I thought winged courier was actually a shaman spell, not druid, which also wasn't in at release but was identical in function.

I don't even remember the level 20ish AoE lifetap even existing. But that might just be because the spells were so useless.

Dolalin

These necro spells are really fuckin doing my head in. Verant messed around with them so much.

29th lifetap was in as variously Wave of Enfeeblement (according to June patch message) or Vampiric Wave (according to EQLizer).

EQLizer: https://web.archive.org/web/19990508052640/http://gameznet.com/eq/spells/necromancer.html

Patch Message: https://wiki.project1999.com/Patch_Notes#Spell_Changes

This of course now raises the question, where did Leach come from? It's not in EQLizer. So I missed that one. Shouldn't be in at launch? Or was it? Fuck sakes, I'll dig more.

DMN
10-16-2019, 08:19 AM
Ya unfortunately necros were constantly being modified/changed even up to a year after launch. 90% of the time either a flat nerf or fundamentally changing the function of a spell. SKs, due to being necro's red headed step children similarly were all over the place.

Benanov
10-16-2019, 09:15 AM
That also raises the question about whether we're going to get bugs that were fixed the next day, or an idealized, smoothed-over classic experience.

I sort of hope #2; it'd be hell on the team to do #1.

DMN
10-16-2019, 09:23 AM
Well, obviously I have nothing to do with their decisions, but I believe they have said they are going to be doing monthly patches. If one wants to argue the "classicness" of an ability/bug/feature hanging around or not existing on a monthly basis, you'd probably just nerf/change stuff unless it existed for longer than two weeks.

Dolalin
10-16-2019, 09:35 AM
My goal with this is just to present things how they were as accurately as possible, and the dev team can decide what to do.

Winged Courier was definitely a Shaman spell. No idea if it was a druid spell or not. I never played a druid nor knew any before the removal. The spell was in game at launch. It was used to send an item or coins on your cursor to a person you had targeted. I don't recall it ever really being abused because it was in zone only when it was supposed to be anywhere. They couldn't fix it to do that or knew that would be a bit too overpowered, so they just removed it. Then again it is possible that it could have been abused by a dupe bug by unscrupulous people but they'd have never admitted or told us that is why it was being removed.

This is a hell of a find. Thank you for putting this list together. I have a much more messy one for my own notes but yours is much more helpful.

I am curious about the state the devs are going for, or are willing to put in changes. I will paise them forever for their dedication to a classic experience, but changes especially to spells and pets have been more on the...lets make it more challenging! side of things, rather than true classic.

Examples: Mage pets wielding weapons and casting spells, pets not taking the delay of the weapon they are handed, charm/beguile not being implemented, whirl being in its fixed state etc..

At least we now have true night blindness back again. That alone is worth all the rest. Salute the next hum/eru/bar you see on green, for their path to max level is dark and filled with terrors.

I thought I'd return to this on the subject of Necromancers because leaving it incomplete has been bothering me.

I found this interview with GZ on Stratics after some digging, it references all of Vampiric Curse, Circle of Death and Lich. He is talking about them on the day before/the day-of the July 1st patch that implemented the first two:

Vampiric Curse / Bond of Death (formerly Circle of Death) (Necromancer) has a new effect.

Vampiric Curse and Circle of Death (Bond of Death) spent a month between June 7th and July 1st patches in a broken state.

From June 7th patch:

Wave of Enfeeblement (now Vampiric Curse) and Circle of Death (both Necromancer) will not work for the next week or so while we make a fix on them.

And from the article:

> Vampiric Curse level 29 DOT that gives you health (so like a drain over
> time) and damages.
> Circle of Death level 49 DOT that gives you more health over time and
> damages. I did not understand their functionality because they didn't
work
> previously (tomorrow's patch should fix this).

On Lich (which was new, though I can't tell for sure which patch it goes in on (gotta be either June 7 or July 1st)) there is the following:

Posted by Mortuus Mortezzah on July 01, 1999 at 9:36:03 AM CDT:

...

Note: Looks like my guess that Lich is the final in the 'Dark Pact' lines was correct. I assume we take on Lich form (similar to how COB we take on Dread Bone form), and perhaps a few other traits as well... (i.e. in Dread Bone form we gain their sight, etc).

Again I'd like to applaud GZ for taking the time to answer these questions. I doubt he will continue to be able to do so, as more and more people are inundating him with similar messages
--------------------
> Can you explain what the Lich spell does?

Call of Bones, but a lot more so.

Now what pisses me off is that he doesn't mention Leach anywhere. Leach is the level 12 necro drain, and is missing from the May 5th 1999 EQLizer spell listing, but it is not mentioned in any of these patch messages.

I would have to assume it was added in one of these spell updates, perhaps the June 7th one that added Vampiric Curse and BoD? That would make sense. But I can find no proof of this. All I can see is that it suddenly popped into existence.

Also, on Charm/Beguile removal, which is only provided because it's kinda interesting:

The spells were removed because Necromancers (and Shamans) could not
charm anything near their level - the pets that they can summon are almost
always better than anything they could hope to charm (because of the charm
level limit). Because of this, and because of some of the inherant trouble
that can come with the charm spells, I decided to remove them from the
Shaman and Necro. I did not remove the undead charming, which works very
well. On a similar note, Shamans did not lose their animal charming. I
will make sure to replace it with something interesting.

http://web.archive.org/web/20000303015420/http://eq.stratics.com/forums/hall/messages/93083616313520.shtml

And lastly, on July 1st patch, both Shaman and Necro disease dots had their damage doubled and durations halved. Necro poison spells also had this done. From the July 1st patch message:

* Necromancer's poison magic doubles damage and cuts duration by half. The total amount of damage is exactly the same, but the time has been halved.

* Necromancer and Shaman's disease-based magic now has a shorter duration. Instead, damage increases.

https://wiki.project1999.com/Patch_Notes#July_1.2C_1999

There are a few other class changes here too:

* Increased recovery amount of Word of Healing (Cleric).
* Harmony (Druid / Ranger) is slightly more effective.
* Incapacitate functions as Enchanter (lvl44) magic.
* The Dark Pact (Necromancer) AC specification has been removed. The effect of layering other magic has been improved.
* Wizard's damage magic “casting time” has been slightly shortened.
* Improved Magician Burnout magic.
* The secret medicine used for Burnout III (Magician) has been removed.
* Added new Wizard magic "Bonds of Force" to Wizard clerk.
* Changed to Mana Sieve (Enchanter), now has immediate effect instead of DOT (persistent damage), and reduced Mana consumption (also reduces effect).

Remaining questions on the Necromancer side though:

* What did the 29th and 49th drains do before they were changed away from Lifetap AoE spells? Did they work or were they broken?

* When was Leach added?

I will try to find answers as time allows.

Hypothesis so far:

Level 12: Leach added (June 7th(?))
Level 29: Previous lifetap spell changed to Vampiric Curse (June 7th [added but broken], July 1st [fixed])
Level 49: Circle of Death changed to lifetap drain (June 7th [added but broken], July 1st [fixed, renamed to Bond of Death])
Level 49: Lich added (June 7th(?))

Note that BoD/Lich weren't researchable until September 13th (recipe was broken).

I'm also going to limit the scope of my list to spell additions and removals only, and *very* significant changes in spell function, otherwise things are going to get crazy.
