Daybreak Games lays off multiple employees in company 'realignment.'

Posters on Reddit appeared to indicate the layoffs hit the Planetside 2 and Planetside Arena teams in particular. Daybreak has been plagued by numerous layoffs and financial woes in the last year, having previously laid off 70 employees in December of 2018 and another batch of employees in August 2018. Yeah, this is actually not good news for us. We need Daybreak to be healthy so they honor their agreements. Still, PS has been on a long long downward slope in terms of player numbers. I was just looking it up a week ago or so and it seemed that it was reaching critical levels, like if you lose any more there's not enough people to fight at the scale that game is supposed to represent.

I heard green99 is just a cash grab to get an rmt infusion and make an offer on official EQ.

The annoying part is that the parts of Daybreak everyone here cares about are worth very, very little. If someone bought them to safeguard P99, they'd mostly be paying for a lot of other crap.

Choice word, I think we all prefer "downsize" as they're making nothing new. Hanging onto a few old IPs isn't going to keep that ship afloat. Matter of time before they sink and do call it a day... if I was an employee still working there I'd be passing resumes around.

Their biggest mistake was cancelling EQ Next, it didn't look great as time went on (versus the original SOE trailer) but I think there'd have been a revenue stream from it if they'd done it properly.

They canceled EQ Next because they had no game. Continuing on is just sunk cost fallacy.

what? a company that has old as fuck mmos that has no stay in the current world of phone games and the old 30-40 year olds dont have the time to grind for pixels is dying?

next youll tell me cable is dying as if it ever will in a world of streaming, illegal downloads are acceptable due to prosecutors will get hit with gigantic legal fees that greatly outweigh what they would gain are present i got bored typing thiswhole post and i gatta say i dont know how the hell they lasted this long considering EQ is still the kinda game where it would take a year or so to catch up and that year is at least 2 or so xpacs worth of time

i dunno how daybreak held on this long but I can see nilbog or rogean putting together their life savings for the past few years building up their reputation as game developers for the future liquidation of assets and everquest is for sale and kinda waiting out pantheon's post-mortdom status. yeah, spellcheck didnt know wtf i was trying to talk about either.

There was plenty of game to be had based on early footage. The problem was they didn't keep developing in that direction once SOE left the building.

It died for me way down the line when they released some pvp footage and the game looked nothing like the trailer and the mechanics looked clunky and basic. No budget/investment, no game.

Would love to see a day at Daybreak Games, what do they do there in terms of developing anything?

It's a matter of time before another "restructure" happens, down to the parent company hosting things in someone's house if it's not sold off sooner.

why amazon games?

They need a big title that will show off their mmo engine. A existing franchise like everquest, has name recognition, a rich existing world to work from, and with the exception of 'Champions of Norrath' has really only ever been a MMO. I dunno why amazon over another company would other than they have lots of cashflow to throw around with little urgency to recoup the investment.

Considering expansions are still coming out and i'm assuming another one will be coming out in december, it seems like the game is still making profit.

I'd so love to see a revitalization of the Everquest IP, as well as success for the Pantheon project. It would be very challenging to top what the Project 1999 team has pulled off, but having multiple MMO options not cut from the WoW mold would be fantastic and perhaps help the industry evolve a bit.

It would certainly be pretty awesome for Pantheon.

I read Brad's post from that link. Without reading any other post I was able to understand what the topic was and where he was coming from. If it's drugs causing him to be clear enough for me to pick up what he's laying down then I hope he has a steady stream.

More likely any lack of clarity is due to lack of sufficient proofreading. He's prone to that. If you've been following Panth since '14 like some of us have you know this isn't of great concern.

I would love to see, but lack the motivation and necessary skillset, someone create the EQ world in a modern engine and give those assets to Nilbog/Rogean to throw their P99 code at to create a skinned version of classic EQ.

Anyone who doesn't see Pantheon as our last great hope for a modern "old school style" MMOG has no heart. Anyone who expects ... well, pretty much anything, from a former drug addict who defrauded his investors, has no brain.

All true EQ fans should have both a heart and a brain, even though that's inherently a contradiction.

DBG died the moment they were created. A few months prior I quit EQ2 after ten years of on and off playing it. I could smell death in the water. SoE was dying much earlier than that and Sony/SGEA knew this hence why they sold the rights to these worthless IP's to some unknown financial company.

Their biggest mistake was cancelling EQ Next, it didn't look great as time went on (versus the original SOE trailer) but I think there'd have been a revenue stream from it if they'd done it properly.

EQ Next's debut video on youtube couldn't even muster up a million views on Youtube within a year of its release. That's red flags all over. If a veteran IP can't even gain that while other games in niche franchises can easily break 2 million in a single week, than you have to ask whether or not the IP is worth anything. This is why the buyer of DBG was some financial company from Russia and not a recognizable game publisher.

Pantheon's subreddit looks to be more than half convinced that Pantheon will be dead in six months. Apparently Brad recently scrawled some meandering missive that persuaded even the hardcore that he's back to snorting up budgets.
