View Full Version : How tall are the Iksar going to be?

Unless I'm insane (or I was just 12), I distinctly remember Iksar being as tall as Barbarians when Kunark first came out, and the NPC guards and traders around Cabilis even reflected this for years over the new models, but they silently changed it like they did a lot of things, and it seems like p99 has followed in those footsteps due to using Titanium.

Or.

I was 12.

Discuss.

Seriously though, I don't believe Iksar were ever classified as a "large race" in-game. That was reserved exclusively for Barbarians/Ogres/Trolls (and maybe Vah Shir?)

Think you are remembering vah shir.

They do have a weird pseudo large classification, where a lot (but not all!) of TRL OGR BAR weapons and gear also include Iksar.

Like those giant boulders from Nagafen's Lair. That was reserved exclusively for Barbarians/Ogres/Trolls (and maybe Vah Shir?)Vah Shir are the same height as Barbarians, yeah, but my memory tells me Iksar were once upon a time as well.

Not a "Large" race, being restricted to Medium sized armour always (though again, the odd piece of gear that only had or have TRL OGR BAR will have IKS on there, too) but just their model being the same height as Barbarianses.

I'm no classic expert (I didn't even start on live for real until Velious) ... but AFAIK those two things (being a "large" race for equipment purposes, and having a model that's the same height as a Barbarian) have always gone hand in hand.

But why add Iksar into the usable races?

I used to remember a lot more, but I'm on very little sleep and the brain is fuzzy. They do exist, though.

They're still the tallest race AFTER Barbarians, but I have a distinct memory of running my Iksar to the Greater Faydark and comparing his height to a Barbarian and it was the same.

Were you standing on orc hill? ...you were just 12 ;) lol jk.

Honestly when I was 10 in 99, everything about the game seemed so much larger. But I wonder if it's possible you are maybe remembering some of the Iksar statues around? And confusing it with the NPCs/PCs?

Not sure ;)

I was 13 when I started playing about a month before Kunark dropped. I played a ranger until planes of power and genuinely had no idea what I was doing. I thought I was this crazy powerful nature warrior. In reality I was an undergeared and incompetent player. I did a lot of soloing because I didn’t understand group dynamics and mostly just got yelled at.

Anyway, you were just 12 and I think mistaken about the height of a pixel lizard.

I can't say one way or the other whether Iksar were as tall as Barbarians when they were introduced to Norrath, but Iksar do have a slightly-larger-than-Medium size. They are not as tall as Barbarians, but they are definitely taller than Humans and elves.

Throwing Boulders (http://wiki.project1999.com/Throwing_Boulder) are indeed a good example, usable by large races and Iksar. Gatorsmash Maul (http://wiki.project1999.com/Gatorsmash_Maul) is another, usable by large races and Iksar.

Mroons Toy (wiki.project1999.com/Mroons_Toy) and Midnight Mallets (http://wiki.project1999.com/Midnight_Mallet) are equippable by large races, Iksar, and Dwarves.

Those are not evil items (no Dark Elves) or lizardy items (they're usable by softskins, after all); they are large items usable by the largest and strongest races of Norrath.

It's always been weird to me that Iksar have 5 less STR and STA than humans.

And I knew there were more examples!

https://wiki.project1999.com/Large_Raw-Hide_Armor_Set
https://wiki.project1999.com/Large_Tattered_Armor_Set
But can't wear large banded or any of the mails, and obviously can't wear plate, since they have their own, exclusive equivalent called Cabilis Scale

As I've said, Iksar have historically always been a MEDIUM race for gear.

They were initially. They can wear the chitin shell from guktop which is large only.

I'm pretty sure iksar started as a ctrl+c ctrl+v of barbarians.

Does anyone remember the ui bug on kunark's release; when trying to roll a barbarian it would give the (false) option of Cabilis as a starting city?

Maybe

Just maybe

We're all 12, and we just don't know it yet.

There was no mouse scroll 3rd person view back then. Most people played almost all the time in first person view, and everything indeed looks so much larger then.

Can't remember for sure now, but I'm not even sure mice had that 3rd scroller button yet in 1999 =)

Yes but the F9 modes didn't include the mouse scroll mode we have here. The F9 modes weren't as practical and most people only used them occasionally to check something out around a corner etc.

I've never played a Gnome on any version of EverQuest, and while I have made Ogres, never on p99.

I think that's commonly called the "Mandela Effect"

This.

Iksars were taller. The universe has shifted beneath you, and the only reason you remember the old version is because it was a childhood memory, and the pathways to childhood memories are convoluted and attached to things that make no objective sense, which makes them challenging to reliably patch out.

The Berenstein continues until such time.

I tend to think the fact that they aren't taller than humans or high elves in EQ2 kind of lends some weight to the idea that they weren't much taller if at all in classic.

Sonark
10-04-2019, 05:49 PM
They are currently taller than humans and high elves on p99 and Live.

If Barbarians are 7', then Iksar are about 6'6" to Human's 6'.

But I think that, originally, before Luclin, they were as tall as Barbarians.

If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but I want evidence and not just people telling me I'm wrong, and some people agreeing with me (sort of?)

I have a clear memory of attempting to make an iksar on live before I had kunark (it was being shipped and I was young and foolish). Logged in and none of the environment textures loaded, as I did not have the requisite files - but I do distinctly remember seeing barbarian character models walking through the ether. Just my 2 cp on a memory from 19 years ago.
