Fuck you tards that call it a tip or a donation. You ain't a waiter or a church. You want to sell a service? Fine, I got no beef with that if you call it what the fuck it is. I tip a waiter if he or she gives me good service and doesn't keep me waiting, this usually involves them taking my order, bringing me drinks and then food, possibly dessert, checking to make sure everything is good during the meal etc. A church passes around a collection plate (donations) for the church and the pastor's sermon, if you feel like you need to donate or it's worthwhile then you do. I've seen people compare ports to a taxi cab ride. The only thing similar is you're getting someone from point A to point B faster than walking. The cab drive takes time, he's working for a wage and tips and he usually is going to engage in conversation for the duration of the trip.
You, on the other hand, are memming a fucking spell and then casting it, which takes 300 mana and the time it takes you to Loading Please Wait.... which is under 30 seconds unless you're playing on an Emachine from 1998. You haven't done anything extraordinary or above and beyond like a waiter or a cab driver might do. You don't seserve a motherfucking tip or a donation. If however, you say hey, I'll port you for 15 pp up front without trying to look like a fucking maryr, then fine, if both parties agree yay you. Till you actually do something worthy of a tip or a donation. Shut the fuck up and QQ, thanks.

Yeah I don't mind paying for ports. If people charge for them. A tip is something given out of gratitude, demanding a 'tip' for porting someone isn't called a tip. It's called payment.

I love it when I get a port (im only lvl 21) and DONATE 10pp. That's a good bit of plat for a lvl 21 toon.
Only to have the porter tell me afterwards "You know, 10pp isn't even worth my time. Don't ask for another port unless you can donate more"

If a waiter has to take on a table of several people at once, typically there's a mandatory set % gratuity added to the bill. Think about that next time you assume someone logging on for 4 hours at a time to just sit and port people wants to do that for shits and giggles. Some people honestly do, basically sit there and help get people around, but they typically are financially better off.
Something to consider.

In the 300 days I /played on live as a druid, I never once advertised for ports and I certainly taxi'd people around all over the planet. If someone stuck plat in a trade window, awesome... if not... whatever. I figured that I made significantly more money by sitting around or solo'ing without anon/roleplay on and getting random tells from people miles away asking for major transportation jobs. Come pick me up in Toxx, drop me off in DL then grab my twink in BB and take him to WC, give him SoW and Camo and meet me back in DL for 350p. Sweet... that certainly beats shouting around zone after zone "porting for tips" like an asshole.

Uhm, generally it's tables more than 6 or 8. Rarely will you find restaurants require a gratuity of 18% or more for 4.

The same reason superbowl tickets cost more, traffic = demand = premium.
When I ported in classic, I said "Porting to all locations, 20p upfront." Now, I don't advertise at all, I simply take people up on the 100p offers when I'm not busy.
Honestly, there is alot of new content to experience, and the prices of new loot are still dropping. Which means you can earn more money camping things now than you will later, so to take time out to port people warrants a higher price.
Don't wanna pay my price, find another porter. But don't call it a tip, capitalism FTW.

IMHO, if porter says:
/ooc WTS TPs all over world for 50 plat!
-its his right to ask how much he is asking, you don't like it, don't call on him. he is NOT suppose to provide you service.
However if porter says: Porting for Donations,
well them, dear porter, realize, that even 1 copper is still a donation ;)
as far as charging more for one location than for others - back on LIVE when I was selling ports, I told the people upfront that porting to Cobalt Scars or Wakening Lands, I was asking for 4 times as much than any other place.
Why? Cause there are KOS mobs who like to hang around in close proximity to the port location, and I hate getting killed over a few plat ;)

But to be honestly fair- no class in game should have a luxury of being able to teleport at their whim, and then use that as a source of income, when there are hungry warriors all around, who can't even afford bronze ;)

You know what takes less time and effort than actually memming a port and casting it?
Putting some money in the trade window.
The only times I will ask for money is if I'm getting requests and I'm deep at a quadding spot or something and it's genuinely an inconvenience for me to port out. However, with Kunark being out now, the only place for a wizard to port into is DL and that spire is a pretty fucking annoying hike to everywhere else on the continent.
If I'm sitting outside Seb and you want a port to WC, it's a serious inconvenience unless I'm bound in the zone. It's a long run back there from the DL spires. Also, the level of the tip you're going to provide should be based on your level. I don't expect a level 10 Wood Elf Ranger asking for a port from GFay to WC to tip 100pp+, obviously. But if someone level 55+ is asking for a port out of KC or whatever and they toss 20pp in the trade window, that's more insulting than it is generous.
I wish you well.
Under a bus.
It's simple — don't advertise ports. And if you still get tells (perhaps while LFG), be sure to say you're only able to port if they're willing to pay. As a rule of thumb, the more vague you are, the less money you'll likely receive. Just sayin'.
Why would it cost more to go to and from Kunark.
I don't charge more money for ports to and from Kunark, but then again I do my best to avoid them. With the only point of entry being DL, if, for instance, I'm LFG in TT (en route to OS) and get a tell for a port from WC, I've got to do the following:
Gate to WC, portal to DL, run to KC, evac to EJ, and zone back into TT (en route to OS). Might not be worth the time for some people.

Agree, it sucks that you can only port into DL. If you want a ride out of Kunark you best come up with some plat, it is a lot of mana and time to get my as back out to my camp spot and no i am not rebinding. I never ask for dontations in my advertisement (which i seldom use) and if people ask my price i will say "what ever you think is fair" 19/20 times they pay a fair amount, when they dont, so be it the few times when people drop like 300p for a port more than makes up for it. These days i typically only port guildmates or folks who /auc WTB port to X for Xp and if it makes sense. I save the "business" side of it for the young druids =D

Don't know what the grief about paying for a port is. I rarely drop less than 50pp for a port. They are providing a service for you and depending on where they're coming from can be a pita to get back.
Money isn't that hard to get in this game and you should make a donation appropriate to your level. It's a dick move not to and you if you don't plan on donating you should tell them up front.
Protip - /split your donation if you're the only other person in the group saves you all that time you have to spend opening the trade window.

In BW last night, someone was begging for a port because their body was in Timorous. Had I ported him to SRO or BB, I would still need to get back. Being bound in FV, I'd have to run from FV->DL->BW.
Surprised it never occurred to the dead person to ask for a SoW and run from BW->DL->FV and take the boat from there.

If I'm not in a group or somewhere I can easily get back to I totally don't mind giving someone a lift for free. Unless you're saving up for something nice, you should just help people out. If someone feels like putting up plat in my trade window, I don't mind though. Usually I decline and say no worries, go have fun.

My beef are porters who 'port for donation/tips' then cry when they don't feel they have been given enough money. Then they come on here and whine like Chtulu does any time some minor infraction has been done to his alt.

Got a port yesterday, donate 15pp (of the 300 or so TOTAL pp i have right now)
Get to BB and ask for a SoW...druid says "sure....that'll be another 10pp"
