View Full Version : Stop calling it a Laptop, thats not what it is

Laptop. How can this be? A lap has no top it has only two dimensions,
length and width. It's not like a desk. A desk has a bottom, a top, and
sides; you place your "desktop" on the top of your desk. A lap has only
one plane; when you stand up your lap dissapears. And your computer
becomes a floortop.

Modern English has revised "laptop" to "notebook computer".

lol revived from april for our viewing pleasure!

yeaaah to the poster of 4 months ago... it's called a laptop because it goes on "top" (meaning placed from above) of your lap. not because it rests on "the top" (meaning top of an object) of your lap.

all "tops" have 3 planes. real life isn't fucking street fighter!

Ektar

well a lap doesn't has as much of a 3rd dimension as street fighter does. a lap is a single molecule thick I guess? and street fighter is a single electron thick? or what the fuck ever.

don't be a silly, Ektar. We don't live in a black hole. A single molecule is still three-dimensional, too. The street fighter physics are only 2 dimensional: Up n' Down! The image itself would be two-dimensional as well, as its only an image. The pixels and the screen would abide by real world's physics, but that's not the point!

If Ryu spin-kicks you in the face then i'd eat my words. And my leg.

Ektar

well just saying that since a lap is defined as the top of your thighs, it's similar to an image on a tv screen. so there's only up n down on your lap, and no going up or down in altitude.

if you stab yourself in the leg, or if you punch ryu in the face, you've gone and done the same thing in both and broke through each 2 dimensional plane. (that sentence didn't make much sense but I did it for the imagery)

I guess it depends on how you define the "top." Say, the imaginary 2 dimensional surface of a table top or the table top in its 3 dimensional entirety.

Much like these dogs. They're racing their owners on a 2-dimensional plane. but in reality it's a 3-dimensional surface. Whether you define the "top" as the concrete racetrack as a "top" and 2d plane or if you side with the reasoning that the concrete is 3d and provides a relatively smooth surface that can be considered a "top"

I define the top as a 2d plane. like this:
