never seen obliged used in a context other than a different way to say they're thankful as per wonkies post, whereas obligated is like a responsibility of sorts.
to juxtapose with wonkies post, if I received titty pics, i'd feel obligated to compliment

Captain here:
Obliged = thankful - Here's your coffe sir. - "Much obliged, thank you!"
Obligated = mandatory - "He was obligated to do the dishes for 3 weeks"
Thank me later.

Okay I'm feeling you about the thankfulness thing. but is it grammatically incorrect then to say something like :
"I felt obliged at least to give him head because he bought such a nice dinner and is obviously not a man of means"

yeah, because you are implying that you feel indebted because the cost to him was greater than the benefit to you. to resolve the transaction more equitably, you feel you need help offset some of the cost to him. now, actually doing this only makes sense if the cost to you of giving head is substantially lower than the value of the meal.

If you feel obliged to give head he is a sweetheart, if you feel obligated he is an ass hole.
Hope this helps.

You are much obliged for that good sarsaparilla because you appreciate the bartender’s service. You are obligated to pay for it because this isn’t Nam, Smokey. There are rules.
