I remember in 1999 when I wanted to use the bank in Neriak I had to run from EC tunnel through snow, sandstorms, hurricanes, and tornado's past raging guards with lazer-blasters and griffins with MLRS rocket launchers.

I think its to easy now.

P.S. I was also bound in Qeynos for some reason.

yea... I remember portin out from North FP and instead of zoning, getting thrown straight up in the sky, all around me was just the blue and clouds. I could walk along a certain pathway, but other than that I was SCREWED. Was a warrior with no gate. took a week to /petition my way into some help.

Also remember how the thought of a rez was just out of the question. Rez? what that be?

I remember getting stuck underneath WC. I could look up and watch the mobs and PCs running around. Even the guides had difficulty locating me, before summoning me.

Logging in to find you are drowning in a small pool in Oggok or Grobb that for some reason you can't crawl out of.

Zoning to drop for 32 k, in some random spot in the middle of the zone, with no time to get a loc.

Having people offer to CR you, only to strip your corpse.

Being surrounded by gigantic gnome and halfling corpses.

Staring at the book.

Falling through the boat due to lag, dying to undead in the sea, and having your corpse lost in the middle of it.

Summoning a pet and having no clue how to command it.

Starting in Neriak. Giving up because you couldn't find your way out of Neriak.

Being killed by guards in Kaladim because you worship Rallos Zek.

Watching corpses pile up at zone to Erudin in Tox because Rungupp was constantly being trained there and was not KOS to guards.

Being killed by druids for killing animals.

Being charmed by the Nec in Tox and being forced to kill your party before being released, alive.

Running ten times invisibly in circles around Beholder at night not being able to figure out how to get to Runnyeye. Looking at those eyes over and over...

Having 80 spiders agro on you everytime you tried to kill just one in Feerot.

THIS ---> ha! i even had the map printed out, totally deleted that dark elf necro i made first

Yep, my first toon was a DE Necro. My first night was getting lost in Neriak for hours....I was still enthused by the game. Then....enter the newbie log. Why is this skeleton attacking me! AHH where did all my stuff go when I died?!

Needless to say I never found that characters corpse, deleted that toon then I rolled a human bard and life was easier.

Ragequitting my first two characters because they were Barbarian and Erudite, had no night vision, and could not find my way past the newbie zones' winding zonelines. Kept zoning back and forth in the dark. Problem was finally solved after some mysterious higher level character gave me a lantern (AND a Runed Totem Staff aka the best weapon ever made ever).

Getting a huge rush when I looted Polar Bear skins in Everfrost because I knew about the super secret Halas quest for leather armor.

Hitting level 9, getting SoW, making the absolutely terrifying run from Halas to Freeport while tracking my progress on my handy cloth map. Seeing the Highpass Ramp and being completely blown away at how cool it was to be climbing up to the top of the EQ world.

Do we have (impaired) night vision implemented on this server?

Making a high elf paladin.
Falling in the river in Felwithe.
Drowning because I could not figure out quickly enough how to swim.

This...

Seeing the Highpass Ramp and being completely blown away at how cool it was to be climbing up to the top of the EQ world.

And this...

Making a high elf paladin.
Falling in the river in Felwithe.
Drowning because I could not figure out quickly enough how to swim.

Along with dieing COUNTLESS times to lag in Kelethin going up and down on those lifts, as a result of my PC not being able to handle EQ's graphics. I eventually started running to Felwithe to sell and bank. And to drown, of course... ;)

Made a druid, got him to level two pure melee (had no idea he had spells or how to scribe them). Someone gave me an FS Scimitar and i was GODLY. Got to level 3, got lost in Gfay, died to an orc centurion. Couldn't find my corpse after an hour, then someone told me corpses rot in 30 mins. Rage quitted, re-rolled a HE rogue. My RL friend made a HE paladin at the same time. I leveled the rogue to 4, using a rusty longsword. My friend got given a bronze 2hs. Was uber jealous of how much more powerful his paladin was - my rogue couldn't even use a 2hs and couldn't tank half so well!!

Rage quitted again and re-rolled a dark elf SK. That was my main through classic and kunark.

No Scammer casinos trying to gouge plat for RmT purposes.

Bronze armor was good armor

Getting nukes while at the bank by oblate i'n telethon and NFP.

Being completely blind everytime it rained.
Using F8 to target in the dark because it was pitch black.
Having directional sound and being able to hear SG's walking behind dunes and knowing exactly which direction they were.
Seeing weird graphics as Devs played with Turbans (Cowl from LGuk), Ninja masks (snake-hide mask from Paw?), etc.
Seeing weird emote actions (saw a guy pat another guy on the back and break into a smile. Have not seen that since).

The best: graphic driver missmatches...

Zoned into NK... every mob was the bearded, red haird human model. Little tiny humans for will-o-wisps, titantic ones for HGs and Griffons... all sizes in between.

Zoned into WC... it was flat. It was plaid (metallic gray, metallic brown, white, black). It had weird things that might be called trees randomly spread all over. I could walk through and cast through these. There was no line of sight disruption.

Zoned into UGuk... there were pictures of mouths, frogs, signs, anything you can imagine in place of the stone textures.

the neriak thing is very true. Im sure like many people i created a dark elf first (cos they just seemed coolest) but couldnt find my way out so i created a wood elf. no where near as cool :(

when lockjaw would pop and everyone in oasis would join in to help.

the game looking like utter shit (missing textures) because i had a diamond monster video card. the day i got my voodoo 3, my dad & i put it in together. a fond memory. EQ looked great after that.

Was soo crazy when /consent gave permission to loot. Had to really trust who you consented. So many got screwed out of stuff :p

I think my first memory of EQ was being level 2 west freeport and joining a group with someone who was offering to "buff" at the gate. He began to cast his "buff", and after the loading screen I found myself alone in Emerald Jungle. Lovely community back on Quellious...

I asked someone at ec tunnel if he can "send me to my bindpoint" which was in gfay, he was like: "sure target me and type /d to give me permission". So i did, he killed me and i was like "why did you do that QQ ? " and he was like " well you are at your bindpoint now, right?"

Ah the memories

This surprised me at the time:

Guy half my level wanted to duel in Felwithe. I told him he would die but he didn't care. He attacked me and the guards beat the crap out of him. I never even hit "A."

"A" was fun before you realized you could map the keyboard. Lots of corpses next to merchants.

There was a patch bug that was lots of fun: EVERYthing was KOS. Oasis was a slaughterhouse.

Hmm, in 1999 I can recall many things..

When I entered the world for the first time, I appeared in the Qeynos Newbie yard. It took a minute to figure out which were the players and which were the NPC's. I remember wondering what this line was that was floating along the ground.. I then read the name above it and saw that it was a snake. :-) That's my first memory of the game (I got in at launch). A friend had been playing the beta so he helped explain a few things later when he got on.. Some other great memories of those initial days..

I was fighting a fire beetle and suddenly I heard this loud clang/ding sound. I was like WTF was that?! I think I asked in ooc or shout and someone told me I just leveled up.. I then read the text and realized that's what it was.. I soon came to love that sound!

I remember my first trip out of Qeynos to Qeynos Hills.. I was scared, it was dark and I had a blast..

It was great that banded armor was worth something..

I made the same old mistake of hitting the A key while trying to talk to a merchant :-)

Getting killed by a guard for trying the begging skill..

Video cards at the time couldn't render too far out so there was always this grey wall where you couldn't see far. I remember later upgrading to a new graphics engine / new video card and I could suddenly see FAR off.. This was particularly weird in Qeynos Hills for me..

Best of all.. the sense of wonder and awe of exploring this massive world with over 2000 players on it. Exploring into the unknown.. Seeing the wizard spires, stone bridge and wooden bridge for the first time in North Karana...

I wish I played in 1999 :( But when I was leveling up, I was with my boyfriend and his brother a lot. I had out an earth pet (but hell, I didn't know what the differences were) and my boyfriend told me to pull my pet back so the mob would run back but it was stuck! Boyfriend said "Oh, it's rooted" and I'm like "What's root?" loolllllllllll

I rolled a half elf ranger and going to qeynos for the first time was life altering. what really blew me away was seeing two dark elf casters hanging out on the zone wall near surefall glade zone. and people sitting around the fire burning there to camp out.

I had quite a few adventures and roleplaying moments until level 7 when, still completely enamored with the game world, I wanted to see freeport with my own two eyes. (just making a character in freeport wasn't enough, I needed the JOURNEY!) so I trekked off asking for directions in every zone I came to. everyone was very kind and offered buffs and sows. once I got to highpass, though...it was exciting because it was so dangerous. being so ignorant, and not heeding the words of passersby that I should NOT GO THERE! I never thought there'd be a ton of orcs at the other end.

respawning back at qeynos left me with such rage that I camped out and rolled a DE necro which became my main. imagine how thrilled I was when I discovered necro gets a bind spell, haha.
