I seen a Leatherfoot Raider Skullcap for sale in EC, and then it reminded of the time a guy was selling the exact same named item in EC that had no WC instant portal effect.
The Scam:
Seller pretended to be selling:

But in actuality was selling:

Anyone else remember this scam or any other scams from back in the day?

No idea why this was posted in Rants and Flames. I'm hearing neither rants nor flames in the original post.

I also fell for this. Wonder if it was the same scammer? But it's like they say, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me for 3 consecutive years, well you can't be fooled again.

no, i upgraded to a member account and then bought coal from the free server peasants and then upsold it to member royalty for 150% ROI and became a Runescape millionaire; i used that gold to lend it to friends in middle school and made them pay me $20 a week to borrow a cool mil; they often stole the money from their parents so they could keep up with the payments before ultimately giving me my runescape money back
i used that cash to buy caffeinated BAWLZ candies and caffeinated soap and shit. ROCK ON DUDE!

Did this on rallos, took 3-4 tries before someone fell for it :D
Twinked out a ranger then managed to pk a lvl ~10 in misty thicket and looted his faceguard of bentos (huge item on rallos)

I am very positive if you were robbed that this breaks the 'play nice rules' policy and Sirken would get angry and wave his wand around after stiffening.

Ya pretty certain that's how it works. I do it all the time, buy something with cash from my tunnel mule. Log the chat I want the item on to receive it. Saves me the hassle of doing a transfer. Just get them to agree to payment from one toon to receive on another, that way it's logged and you have proof if you do run in to a bad egg.

This is how I buy pretty much everything. Never had an issue. Always assumed the above anyway...

On live EQ I used to run a casino scam. For an hour or two I would post my casino messages (/roll 1-1000 deal) claiming there isnt a limit on platinum, and if they want I can post my Plat in trade proving I can payout if they win.
I proceeded to have a friend log random chars openly betting while talking in /say and /shout about winning. At the same time a second friend was openly condemning my casino, saying it's a scam and not to trust me. This went on for a good hour or so like I said, and then my friend who claims I'm scamming throughout ooc "plays" my casino with 10k bet and won triple the amount, apologizing profusely in occ that I am not a scam what so ever.
At that point people would immediately flock to me giving me platinum for bets that ranged anywhere from 100pp to 30k one time. I keep doing the "casino rolls" accepting bets and giving no payouts until they catch on. Log off, transfer all the Plat and high end loot I was wearing (more "proof" my lvl 30 Alt has a rich main that can afford to do this casino). Get another char PLed and do the casino again a week later.
Eventually I had a GM issue a cease and desist through tells and I got suspended for ignoring it while arguing casinos aren't against the rule of the game. Bastards.
lol
were you the guy who was offering a fungi if the roll landed on the right number? One number in 1000 ? Can't remember what the cost was to play.
I remember that guy spamming rolls in the emptyish offpeak tunnel til he hit the right number then posting it on the forums as if someone had just won it.... yeah right lol

Not so much a scam, but I played on a pvp server. People would sell KEI in PoK(safe zone), we would port them and kill and take there plats, they caught on later and started doing it by banks

I had a friend once that lost a duel where the mage pet killed him. He lost xp and lost a level! He got so mad he threw all of his stuff on the ground and deleted his character! (he was a fucking spazoid) Well, my other friend whom defeated him in the duel picked up all his gear. About 15 min went by before friend A realized what he did and he begged the GMs to get his character back for him. They returned the character with all of his gear! So the friends sold the dropped gear and made pp! They did this like 3 or 4 times and never got caught! Another friend tried this, and the GMs must have caught on, and didnt get his character back or his gear.

That's a pretty shitty scam, all you need is a Dragoon Dirk to turn non-port Leatherfoot Raider Cap into standard clicky Leatherfoot Raider Cap. Not sure why people would even bother to do that since Dirk's are so easy to get.
I've never sold WC caps but before I started self-recharging I would keep a standard clicky WC cap on all my toons and the non-clicky cap + dragoon dirk in the bank in case I couldn't find someone to recharge.
I never understood how people fall for the old switcheroo. It takes 2 seconds to check the item in the trade window, and for 99% of items that don't have the same name the server tells you "Person has offered you A Fungi tunic" or whatever.

There is a third hat you can get by killing Halflings in nek forest. This is probably the one that was being used to scam with.

Gundum is the reason why we couldn't have nice things. I ran a legit casino and sometimes would win sometimes I would lose a lot. Games weren't rigged albeit some harder to win than others.

After Luclin came out, my friend would go to the bazaar, so a search to see which PC vendors had a fungi, and then just whisper them. A successful exchange would go something like this:
Him: hey
Vendor: sup
Him: I started a new warrior alt :)
Them: who's this?
Him: guess :P
Them: (begins guessing a bunch of friends)
Him: (picking one of the random friends) Ya it's me <friend name> haha anyways think I could borrow that fungi for a couple days? Just to get out of these low levels!
...and more often than not they would hand this complete stranger their fungi, he would transfer to another character and erase all existence of the toon he used to dupe them.
I successfully tried it once, but my conscious got the better of me and I found the guy a day or two later and returned his item back to him.

the ol' firepot scam was always my favorite, back when you instantly dropped money on the ground without an "are you sure you want do drop this?" message. Made mucho plat doing that on different servers until they eventually changed the money dropping procedure.
