View Full Version : Equipment shaming

I've been having fun playing naked recently. Its been a blast, and the only issue that has come up is, equipment shaming.

I was grouped last night, and after someone complained about my dps, they joked about it, then about ten minutes later another guide mate showed up, they booted me and invited him. When I asked about it, they were all so angry I was wasting everyone else's time by not having better gear at level 12. (I was in tarnished and some patchwork with a few pieces of ring mail)

I figured, no biggie, logged for a night, and over the next few days, these same people made sure to shout to the zone that I had shit gear and not to waste their time.

So now I have a scarlet letter shadowknight with people actively shaming me for being poor.

Feels bad man

Shaming someone in a game for not having better imaginary pixel armor is the most pathetic type of bullying, holy shit. I can only imagine what their real lives are like that they're reduced to this type of behavior to make themselves feel better, and superior to anything. Yikes.

If someone doesn't meet the group standards just be courteous enough to not invite them to begin with.

I played a ranger in 99.. people didn't want you then even if you were geared. Every camp had a "list" and I would always get passed because I was a hybrid.

I don't want to shame anyone, and the guild is a popular leveling guild, so they have loose standards and high turnover. Just wanted to get my experience out there.

98% of the time I've spent on P99 has been absolutely positive, maybe that's why this seemed so out of place.

It may have been because the XP was rolling in, I had 100% control of all hate and just having a blast when suddenly I get dropped mid fight and see his buddy running over. They also stopped healing me and I almost died since they backed off on the mob too.

So some sort of planned, anti-troll conspiracy.

98% of people on this server I would gladly lose XP for

Hello guys, Swish here... due to many players not being able to twink on red I can say this would not happen on the red server and invite the OP to begin again in a less toxic environment.

MM gave a similar answer to what I thought when I read your post.

Basically you need to make a female de or human.

Wearing crappy gears or even better, none, would not bring shame, no! Such apparel or lack of apparel would bring praise!

You simply need to remember a couple things. Number 1, refer to all others as "hun," number 2, in chat always use smiley faces or frowny faces depending on the mood you want to convey.

If you do these things your p99 experience will be much better on a poorly geared toon.

My female rogue (all starting points in charisma, obviously) lost her things in Karanas. I was mid teens so thought no bother, I'll quickly replace it anyway.

I borrowed a mage summoned spear and returned to crushbone/, ready to loot a bunch of raw-hide armor, bronze spear, bracers of battle, brass earri*ngs and so on. Stuff I view as appropriate for that level really.

I put about for joining a group and I too was being harassed for my gear. I explained I had lost my corpse and didn't want to waste my (or CSR) time and would just regear. One of the most vehement objectors continued to harass me, and I can only assume he petitioned me, because gm broke invis, asked them to be nicer and summoned my corpse!

The funny thing is the corpse was only equipped with ringmail, with a puguis for a weapon. The only thing of vague value was a couple of jagged bands (had been playining unrest earlier). Not really any improvement!

I ended up vendoring most of that gear, did my trakanon idol and went to seb. Got into a couple of CE groups at level 20. One time they realised my level and kicked me from group. The group asked me to come back and open the door, but as they didn't feel like my skills were valuable enough to be grouped I was disinclined to continue playing with them. I feel bad for the monk and the warrior who I had to leave locked inside that haunted mausoleum.

It's a sad state of affairs. People cry about players that don't have the best gear or don't follow the cookie-cutter easy builds. It's why I stopped playing wow after beating ICC with my guild during wrath. And even then I had overstayed my welcome by one expansion.

You talk to the types of people that play that way and they'll give you the excuse that the game isn't hard, to get better, etc. when the sad irony is that they're trying to make everything as easy as possible out of sheer laziness because they can't compensate with skill where their gear or build is lacking.

Same with this server. Everyone waxes nostalgic about how EverQuest was and is the best game during classic because of how unforgiving it is, yet a vast majority of alts that are leveling up are obscenely twinked for the easiest and quickest leveling possible. Also why so many have been busted for RMT and the absurd numbers that got caught in the great MQ2 delevel sweeps when dsetup.dll first came out.

Shit is weak and y'all have gotten soft. That's why, try as Rogaine and nildog may to make the server perfectly resemble classic, it'll never be the same with such a weak community.

Don't sweat these nerds, anyone bagging on your gear at level 12 is clearly new around here. No amount of gear will be able to substitute personal skill, I know people with alts so blinged out you cant look directly at them without suffering retinal damage and they get wrecked all the time because they are garbage at everquest. And I've played with some real pro nerds leveling up in rags who are now currently some of the most decked people on the box. Anyone in a leveling pug moaning about the gear quality of their orc highway group is really just saying they aren't good/geared enough to solo/duo something of equivalent difficulty and would like someone to carry them. Play well, actively fulfill your role, and take constructive criticism and advice gracefully and you will begin to receive invites on a regular basis from people you've grouped with previously. I level all my characters in groups, I like to rub elbows with the great unwashed masses, and typically by about lvl 30 or so I've met a good chunk of the people actively leveling during my play times and getting a group is inevitable. If you are even remotely extroverted by the time you hit 50 you should have a decent number of elf bros in your friends list if you aren't defective in some way.

Well, that sucks. I admit, I was wondering if I would end up experiencing anything similar leveling up as a rogue in Auld Lang Syne, but I've been fortunate to have generally positive experiences. I've had some people suggest I get cheap gear upgrades or try to give me things when I was lower level, but noone has kicked me from a group or complained when I can't put out as much damage as my more fully geared counterparts.

I've found that playing with things I've found myself is super fun. Just upgraded my oldest piece of gear last night, an alligator tooth earring, with a blue diamond electrum earring I got from a guild group camping the Allizewsaur. Most of my gear has a fun story behind how I got it, whether its my Polar Bear Cloak I got after spending an hour and a half skulking around everfrost in sneak while trying to find Karg Icebear at level 10 (and subsequently being eaten by a cat during the turn in), or my gold star ruby ring I got at level 24 by pickpocketing a star ruby off a seafury cyclops and giving it to a guild jewelcrafter to enchant for me.

Keep on playing naked, OP!

...by not having better gear at level 12. (I was in tarnished and some patchwork with a few pieces of ring mail)

I find this amusing because the gear you describe is effectively level-appropriate for level 12. I suspect some of the newer P99 generation who started during Kunark or later have forgotten (or never knew) what classic leveling means. Use patchwork or leather up to the mid teens with cheap vendor-bought weapons (2-6PP). If you can finish a set of banded by about 14-15 or so, you're doing good and should also be able to afford a combine weapon by then. Banded into the low 20's when you can obtain bronze...then bronze up till you can get quest armor or other similar drops (likely during the 30's).

Wait, u can pick pocket gems from seafuries??????

Yup! From what I could tell sifting through forum posts trying to figure out what I can do with pickpocketing, the code has changed a few times over the years. From what I've been able to determine, the current implementation can pickpocket giant, humanoid or werewolf body types level 45 and under to steal anything that isn't NODROP, Magic or a wielded weapon (although I think there's a bug that stops you from taking non-coins off things under level 20). Seafuries are 42 and under and giant body type, so you can totally sneak along behind them and take their stuff.

Tricky parts were finding a time when people weren't actively killing them, since I don't pick off engaged targets, and having SOW so I was fast enough to chase them down with sneak on, since they tend to wander. Also, the risk of death on a failed pick since there's nowhere to run, but overall it was an exciting treasure hunting expedition at level 24. Got a Sapphire and a Star Ruby out of it before I decided to stop pushing my luck, was like 1/3 of my money at that point in time.

I might try it again now that I'm high enough level that I can likely root poison them and log on a failed pick, but it would almost be easier to just get a partner and kill that at this point or group somewhere else with good plat drops.

Slight correction, maximum level for pickpocketing should be 45 or player level -5, from what I've read. I'm not to 51 yet, so haven't been able to test that myself.

A lot of players on p99 have played with maxed out toon's several alts and a huge bankroll for quite a long time. And have forgotten what can be done even with horrible equipment or even none at all....twinking can be fun for those short time "power trips" it provides similar to power-leveling, especially if your only goal is simply getting another toon on their account to 60 to camp out at raid locations, or camp locations for plat drops

Don't let their over competitive nature of wanting EQ to be easier for them ruin your fun. If you enjoy getting your own stuff or playing with the scraps you can provide yourself that's fine, those people have already forgotten that it is possible to progress from nothing, the game is not as hard as they perceive it to be they are simply viewing from a "rushed" mind-set of needing to advance as quickly as possible. Rather than enjoy the journey.

Level 12? That's a dick move right there. This is the problem with a top heavy server. I'm glad this issue doesn't come up too often. Rolling SK you should be decently twinked though but at level 12 it really shouldn't be an issue.

I'll bet he works at Wal-Mart with Ulillillia aka Nick Smith, pushing carts through the parking lot very proud about this particular action which gives him the sense of superiority he needs to get through his days.

didn't read... however, at least put some cloth pants on your head... play how you want and if you decide to play in such a manner expect people who don't get it or just want to talk shit to do just that...

I will add that with proper hyper-world-domination mode gameplay you will only get praise for not having some third parties requirements upon inspection...
