View Full Version : Do you floss?

Hi.
I'm a young dentist. And I want to provide a free dental hygiene check up for my fellow ever questers.
Do you floss? Flossing is important. If you don't floss, you have bacteria that smells like human feces living between your teeth and everyone can smell it when you talk to them.
Floss or you are fucking disgusting.
Ok?

No and using commercial tooth paste is a scam to ruin your teeth so you have to go to the dentist.

If I don't floss, brush, then rinse with listerine (has to be in that order) after every meal, the dirty mouth feeling drives me to distraction.

I also floss, brush, and rinse. I do not rinse with Listerine but with ACT because the alcohol in Listerine kills the microbiome. Annoyingly it feels like ACT is increasing its alcohol content.

Not flossing is pretty damn gross. If I miss a day of flossing it feels the same to me as missing a day without showering. If you don't floss every day now, try it for a week and then you'll see what a disgusting slob you've been your whole life.

It seems to have a side effect of making you angry at the keyboard. Not sure I could recommend it to anyone based on that.
Personally I don't floss but I do brush twice daily and I use mouthwash. A couple of decades doing that and I seem to be okay. See a dental hygienist twice a year, its all good.
Maybe some of you need to examine what goes in your mouth better...

i only brush 1x a day, floss like 1nce a week. Been trying to ramp the flossing up (i actually enjoy flossing quite a bit, the buzz it gives your gums is pleasant) but i dont beat myself up over it. Got no intention of ever being a 2x a day brusher.
diet has more to do with dental hygiene than your scrubbadub routine tbh. Eat oatmeal (not the kind packaged with sugar add your own very small amount instead), bagels, bread and savory dishes with lots of capsaicin (you won't miss salt, sugar added, etc if you get a nice spice buzz) and obsessively drink water non stop all day for 15 years and maybe you might get to be like me. If you need an intense flavored beverage learn to enjoy coffee, tea, occasional beers. These have nuanced flavor that is way better than soda drinks and "juice" (sooo different from soda cuz its natural amirite) anyway.
Don't convince yourself you need concentrated sugar from citrus for vitamin c or other dogshit nutrients; analyze everything you consume by sugar, protein and calories (fat content doesn't really matter) while brushing 1x a day and you can enjoy better teeth than you have now with less effort than you put in currently, while feeling better and enjoying visible abdominal muscles without any form of scheduled/rigid exercise regimen. Dentist compliments me on the state of things and the exceptional hardness of my teeth every single time, and daily when I look at my shirtless visage in the mirror of my beautifully well-lit luxurious bathroom before I take a shower I feel reassured.

Floss and have blood stained teeth vs don't floss and have white teeth.

If your gums bleed when you floss, you've already got gum disease and if you let it persist, you can look forward to dental implants or full dentures sometime in your future.

There is a hole in your theory about my gums,..
I said they bleed when I floss not when I brush. Clearly my flossing skill isn't very good and I end up cutting my gums.

I floss ^^ Personally, inlike the woven floss. You know the kind that has multiple fibers? It feels like it does a better job and is friendlier with your gums. You can slip it in and maneuver closer before sliding it back and forth without hurting your self. It is fuller too, but also deformed nicely to cover more surface area ^^ Just my 2 cents ^^

Clearly you only read what you wanted to read and stopped at the word "brushing" and didn't continue on to the rest of the phrase where it included "flossing or eating hard food". Bleeding from any one of those three activities is indicative of gum disease. If you bleed when you floss, you have Gingivitis, the first stage of something worse.
You can ignore facts all you want, but it won't make the truth go away. Don't say you weren't warned when you're being fitted for your very expensive new teeth in your 50's and 60's.

Nah I don't cut my gums with the floss picks. I keep them in the car even. Life saver especially when I go out for chicken wings.
But technically Floss picks are not Floss. I cut my gums with floss. I get aggressive like an Italian stereotype with piano wire. :(

The floss harps do prey well, but you can't really wrap the tooth like you can with floss. I'd say bees. Brushing and floss harps you no missing much, but if you ant to give traditional flossing another go without tearing up you gums, try woven floss. Of course, if you are too aggressive, you can still hurt yourself with it.

I use these kevlar coated Plackers, they are great. My teeth are really close together, so conventional floss tends to rip and break.
These Plackers never break. They are plastic handles housed with the flossing string with a pointy pick on the end that can be used as a tooth pick. Quite a nice little item.
I keep one on my desk, one in my car, in my pockets, I floss frequently thanks to having them everywhere.
If your gums bleed from flossing, you just need to keep flossing, eventually your gums "toughen" up and stop bleeding and your gums will become healthier as you knock the residue and plaque out from between your teeth.
Flossing is a good thing.

Many moons ago, I worked in a warehouse and the one dudes breath always smelled like he had shit sandwiches multiple times daily. It was an ongoing joke with everyone that worked there but that was many years back before safe spaces, bullying laws & political correctness.
I'm not a young doctor but it is common knowledge that dental hygiene relates to your over all health. Please don't force other people to smell last weeks cocoa puffs and take care of your fangs.

I try to remember to floss, but a lot of the times I remember after I've already brushed. I know that is weird to forget it. That being said, wasn't there recently something published that flossing actually isn't based off any actual scientific evidence or something? Also, how important really is flossing? Can't proper toothbrush technique along with a good rinse dislodge things between your teeth? When I was a kid I poorly took care of my teeth and got cavities, but the only time as an adult that I encountered not flossing to actually be bad for me was when one of those cavities I had before chipped apparently and bacteria got into the hole. Not sure flossing would of even saved that. However before that and after all my checkups have never resulted in anything bad and don't really floss ever. Probably once every 2 weeks if I can remember haha.
