Long term nicotine and SSRI (or quite a few benzodiazepines) are a real hassle to deal with. I recommend you go to a walk-in clinic, or your general practitioner and explain to the doctor that you're trying to quit smoking and having issues doing so, and that you'd like a prescription of buspirone to assist in curving the cravings and mental fatigue.

no smoking for two years. Cold turkey. To succeed, you need to really want to quit. Not because your sig other is nagging you, not due to the price, or because the surgeon generals says that smoking can cause low birth weight, or the skull and crossbones on the cover, or whatever. You have to get it cemented in your mind that you don't want to smoke. Don't bother with the crutches, work on your head.

Statistically, you're bound to have a relapse so you should probably just go ahead and start now to have as little aggrevation as possible.

Quitting smoking sucks, I've been "clean" for nearly 8 months and just recently fell off the wagon. Bought 2 packs this last week, I know it won't last though. After a few weeks I honestly couldn't stand cigarettes and I don't really care for them now. After a few days you lose the taste, after a few weeks you lose the craving.

Im a recovering addict..I went through rehab a long time ago, NA, Doctor's Treatments.. I'm familiar with the word relapse and what it entails.
The cause of relapse is that you fail to contain that bubbling urge inside you to use whatever substance you were addicted to. Now...why do you have that urge? Because whatever you were doing made you feel GOOD...Opiates got me high, They felt fucking great when i were on them. So even now i still have some days where i might feel like i want to use an Opiate, But that isint a road i travel anymore. When i smoke cigarette...All im doing is just smoking a cigarette. The only reason im smoking that cigarette in the first place is because im feeling physically uncomfortable due to the nicotine withdrawals, Not because if i smoke that cigarette i get super high from it..I feel nothing but grossed out. The whole reason its hard to quit smoking is because the nicotine withdraw will drive you up the fucking wall. After the withdrawals are gone...There is no more urge to smoke. With narcotics...you will still WANT to use way after physical withdrawals subside because that certain drug made you feel so (fill in the blank with w.e) Why the fuck would you relapse on cigarettes? Better yet...How the fuck? Ive never heard of that in my entire life..Everyone ive ever known that stopped using tobacco stopped using it forever. Just a weird ass concept to me

The patches helped me. It's actually cheaper than weening yourself off the smokes. Just follow the directions, i.e. 21mg patches for a month, 14mg for 2 weeks, and 7mg for two weeks. But as someone said earlier, you have to have your mind right, or you're just throwing money away. Good luck. It's a bitch.

Quit smoking six years ago, cold turkey - had been a pack a day smoker for 8 years. For me, it was the decision. Sounds simplistic, but I realized that after several attempts to quit (using every crutch imaginable) I had been going about it all wrong. I was attempting to quit. As soon as I realized there is a difference between going into it with a "I'm going to try to quit" attitude versus a "I'm am going to stop putting this shit into my body, forever, starting today." I was able to stop with success.
It was not easy in terms of withdrawls, as other have mentioned. EQ saved me, really, because it gave me something to do on weekends during the six months - yes SIX - that I did not go out to bars. That was a tough decision but a necessary one. Going out with friends was, for me, the worst temptation, as well as driving to work (I took the bus for awhile as an alternative) and rode my bicycle some days. It REALLY helped that Washington passed laws forbidding smoking indoors. No more smoke at bars. I went to the gym - a lot, and took up jogging (slow at first because of my shitty smokers lungs, working my way up to 3-4 miles)
The point is, the first few weeks are the worst. It gets easier. It can be done without crutches. I'd wish you luck, but really...luck has zero to do with it.

Q: How to REALLY quit smoking?
A: Chantix
Seriously, this shit works. It WILL make you quit. Just take the pill and go. Sounds crazy but it worked for me, and it worked for my fiance. We both were avid smokers for years but have been totally clean without looking back for over a year now.
Some things to know: Yes, it is expensive. Even with insurance, you're looking at around $30 for a month's supply. Without insurance, closer to $100 I've heard. But, most people go through that in buying cigarettes anyway. Time to do a trade-off.
Also, you have to stay on it for 6 months (3 months is an option and you may feel you don't need it anymore after that, but seriously stay on it for the full 6 to really kill any chance of relapse).
Side Effects: A lot of them. I didn't experience much except vivid dreams. Funny shit, but its true. You may experience vivid dreams when you start taking it. But, they go away after a while. The really bad side effects are nausea (definitely make sure you take these pills with food or you will feel sick as fuck), fits of rage, depression, sudden anger, fits of rage. I didn't have these problems, but my fiance sure did. Holy shitbags, she was a walking roller coaster of emotions. She was next to impossible to deal with at times. I'd simply ask her what's for dinner and have to dodge a frying pan being thrown at me.
However, the upside is that you can actually cut these pills in half and they will still be as effective. She did and it cut down on her "mental instability." (Thank God)
In conclusion: If you can get past the side effects and the cost, I highly recommend this shit to ANYBODY. But don't just "try it." DO IT, and be married to your pills.
Make an appointment with your doctor and get prescribed today! (Yeah, I sound like an advertisement but oh well)
Good Luck!

I think its funny that you thought that gum was nasty, and didn't want to take it, and yet you are a smoker. Umm.. that shit is way more nasty. Deal with the gum!
Or use the crutches suggested in this thread. Quit smoking, just do it. Get that crap out of your life. You don't need it, and you don't want it. You do? No you don't, *slap*. No, you really dont.

My mom did this, but she didn't stick with it because she thought she was done with cigarettes after just a month. Told her to keep taking them but she said it made some stuff taste funny (coffee for instance, something she drank all the time but couldn't stand while taking this) and since she didn't have cravings anymore she just quit taking the pills. A little over a month later she was back at it.
This shit does work though if you stay on it for the full duration.

Thats insane....Really interesting to me that a few people here have claimed to still be mentally addicted to cigarettes even after a year + of not smoking. If you "want to light up" that urge is coming from you being mentally addicted since the physical withdraws are long gone..
The ONLY reason its hard to quit smoking for me is the annoying physical withdrawals, and the knowledge that if i take just one drag the physical uncomfortableness would immediately melt away. I'm curious as to how you got mentally addicted to cigarettes? I HATE smoking...i only do it because im physically addicted...If my body does not have nicotine i feel "off" to say the least..But i have never "WANTED" to light up a cigg, It brings me no enjoyment whatsoever...

After many many years of smoking(close to 40 for me) your mind build mental queues that trigger the want of nicotine. such as after a meal, after sex, While playing poker. a mired of things that trigger that long term mental conditioning that will be in your brain forever.
I quit a year ago last OCT when smoking almost killed me. After having pneumonia for the 3rd time that year I was released from the oxygen tent to go home and on the way out of the hospital in the parking lot I tried to light u and collapsed and ended up staying in the hospital another 3 days. That was the straw that broke this camels back. My point is that after long term smoking your brain wants that nicotine, and it has built mental triggers that makes it want that nicotine. Those do not go away over night. It can take many years to clear your mind of them. I still have at least one craving a week. and expect to probably have them once in a while for the rest of however much life I have left.
How to quit smoking..
Move to BFE.
After move sell your car or disable it in some way
If you want a Cig bad enough to walk 40 miles to the closest store, then your hooked and this wont help.

Good luck, my *****. Like other people have said, there are no magic bullets and I suspect a lot of it all boils down to motivation. I too hope to quit eventually but have no desire to do so at the moment. I could take my cigarettes out in the backyard, bury 'em and piss on 'em. An hour later, I'd be digging them up and drying them in the oven.

When I started smoking I would get little "highs" but they wouldn't last long. Not like a weed high obviously, but a buzz I guess? But I'm one of those people that you all probably hate, that can pick up a cigarette and put it down and not have a thought about it. It's not till I'm pissed off or stressed that I really want one anyway.

I started to stop smoking a little over a year ago. Illinois passed a smoking ban in bars and restaurants in 2008 and I went a year sitting out in the cold freezing my nuts off before finally decided that shit was stupid.
I saw a guy in a bar I frequent hitting what looked like a cigarette, but wasn't and started asking questions. Ends up it was a nicotine vaporizer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_cigarette).
I've been using the vaporizer exclusively since January and I love it. Some days I can go without it, but when I'm at the bar and need a hit, it's there in my pocket and I don't have to leave the building.
The vapor is basically water, varying amounts of nicotine (I use 24mg), artificial flavors and a food additive (Polypropylene glycol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polypropylene_glycol)). You can get vapor in pretty much any flavor that you want. I get mine from a place in Wisconsin so I know I'm not getting Chinese cast offs.

Its interesting to think though that over 1 billion people were persuaded to repeatedly do something which they didn't enjoy and is detrimental to their health. Mainly because they wanted to look cool.
The only reason people like cigarettes is because they are addicted to them. You aren't born addicted to them, so why choose to be?

I quit in '04 after 12 years, 2 packs a day.
Truth be told, I don't even really know how. Was at a party, left my cigs there by accident, never made it to the store to get more that night, nor the next morning. Never bought them again.
Good luck! It can be done, and as I recall after day 2 it's down to the mental stuff, like not having anything in your fingers to fidget with. A bit like trying to stop a habit like biting your fingernails or something . . . just tell yourself to "stop it" when you catch yourself holding your pen like a cig, or chewing on it or something. This is the part that seemed to take a while to pass.

If you really want to quit half the battle is over.
I smoke about 15 cigs a day and have been thinking about quitting but I really don't want to. The gum does work tho as long as you chew it properly i.e. not like gum. But as far as stopping the cravings it does work.
Maybe the reason why even after years of quitting sometimes people still think about lighting up is because they know that first cigarette is gonna feel real good.
Good luck to you.

Anyone else not like smoking for 8 months out of the year, but then pick it up when it gets cold? Curious if I'm the only one.
I, for some reason, enjoy smoking in the colder months, November - February. Then all of a sudden I think they're nasty again. I used to think it was only temporary but I've done this for about the past 5 years.

QFT.
I generally smoke all year round, but there's nothing better to me than putting a coat on and going out for a smoke.
Here's to a new year though... Quitting cigarettes is on my to-do list!

best way to quit smoking is to get fuck-all sick with a cold or something, where you're physically unable to smoke (unless you get drunk enough to where your throat goes numb, and all). once that first half week-week goes by it's easier to do without.
but why would anyone wanna quit? cigarettes make you look cool, they have vitamins in them, and they stimulate your "T-ZONE"

Yea I get that also, it makes more sense during the colder months for some reason. Smoking in the summer time feels really filthy cause of the humidity combined with 90F+ degree weather.

Hahaha soo true..Whats weird is when i would get sick i WOULD NOT SMOKE. Like if i had a realll bad cold or the flu if i tried to smoke..The cigarettes would taste sooo bad, Just couldn't do it. It would of been easier to quit when i got sick but i was so tired of it that i didn't want to wait any longer.

I am currently in a 7 month success run after about 4 reups and I always stopped after getting sick. I always thought about how much I hated being sick those 3 days and how bad cancer and shit would feel.
All the people on here who haven't been addicted to cigarettes and act all mentally tough and crap need to realize that nicotine is a different story than anything else. It isn't a logical decision to be addicted to smoking, you just smoke a few times for fun and it just goes from there.
Smoking during a high stress point in your life a lot can really reinforce the addiction too, and so you will associate cigarettes with stress relief for any number of years, with or without a physical association.
Good luck Revoke, I have done pretty well with the patch this is my second run with it, used it as directed and have been totally off for like 4 months.

I've been a smoker for the better part of about 15 years, roughly a pack a day. I quit once for 15 months (used chantix. I didn't have the nausea that most people get, but I did have some INSANE dreams which I thought was fun). One drunk night at the bar I smoked a couple and I ended up buying packs again. I'm getting myself to the point where I truly want to stop again. I'm tired of not having any wind! I'm working up the balls to go cold turkey this time. The desire is in me (like everyone's saying, you need to really want it or it won't work), I'm just waiting for the moment where I say fuck it and stop. Some inspirational facts I found:
Benefits of quitting
20 minutes after quitting = Blood pressure and heart rate begin to return to normal; blood circulation improves.
8 hours after quitting = Carbon monoxide levels return to normal.
24 hours after quitting = Risk of heart attack begins to drop.
1 week after quitting = Sense of smell and taste begin to improve.
3 months after quitting = Lung functions increase by 30%.
9 months after quitting = Smoker’s cough and shortness of breath fade away.
1 year after quitting = Excess risk of heart attack drops by half.
5 years after quitting = Risk of stroke drops to that of a nonsmoker.
10 years after quitting = Lung cancer death rate is about half that of a continuing smoker.
15 years after smoking = Overall risk of premature death from smoking related causes is now the same as a nonsmoker.

Quite a bit of layperson terminology in the above link, and well over 150 citations to other articles pointing back to the general study of nicotine addiction. It might explain a few things to those that want to stop smoking, and outline some of the newer methods of cessation (through pharmaceutical pursuits and positive reinforcement -- aka cognitive behavioral therapy, the only part of psychology that is related to science at all.)
Also related, and interesting finds on "the patch" and gum:
