Good Morning!

Recently my gaming group's interest in EverQuest has peaked since the announcement of the Ragefire server. I played around a bit on the beta server and had fun, but the knowledge that it is going to cost monthly really kinda put me off of it. Very recently I learned about Project '99 and I'm looking into possibly playing here instead of doing a live server as it seems to have many of the elements that are really pumping us up about playing again. I'm concerned about the lower level population for grouping and other minor issues but I can figure those out while playing.

My primary question is about the bandwidth usage of actually playing on the Project 99 servers. We have a player who is on a limited usage internet and the reason he is interested in playing EQ is because it appears to use a max of about 50 MB an hour. I don't see any reason why Project 99 would use more than that, however there are tons of variables that could cause it to have higher usage than the Live game.

So my question is, does anyone who currently plays know about how much (on average) bandwidth they use while playing? Obviously there will be some hours that spike and some hours that dip under but just looking to get an idea.

Thanks!

We are talking a 16 year old game here. The Horse Power to run this game is pretty low. You can almost run this game on a Cell phone.

If you are playing a Bard on a old computer there are tricks on the forums to help on that. :D He or she should be able to play on here with a pretty old laptop.

Its been asked before and there are a few threads about it.

Short answer: 10mb an hour on the high side. I play on my phones hotspot and my data usage hardly moves.

I realize this wasn't the point of your post, but...

I wouldn't worry about the low level population. There were 42 people in Nektulos Forest the other night. Some starting areas are a little quieter, but there's always people around.

I appreciate the responses! Looks like we are good to go.

Yeah I was super surprised to find so many lowbies around Halas at noon on a Monday.

Excited about playing!

The classic UDP coding used on the network side of the application is actually standard even now a-days.

On the client side, if you are running a Microsoft OS, you can simply capture your network I/O and see how much data is actually going back and forth between your client and their server.

You'll find that there is VERY little traffic. (Caveat: If there are 100 people in a raid (immediate area) with you, my statement will not be correct)

i used my cell as a hotspot and looked at data usage after 3 hours of gameplay, it was 123mb

Ouch, sounds like you want to turn off background services + windows update.

I tether whilst playing and its typically 10mb/hour. I was at first concerned I'd go over my 2gb/month soft cap and get throttled to shit by T-Mobile but I've never exceeded 600-700mb a month.

We just finished setting it up on his system, but unfortunately there seems to be some serious network lag (connection being dropped after server selection, guard rubber banding once in game, etc). I assumed with it only transferring an average of 2-3 KB/s worth of data it would work on a network that tends to run around 5-10 KB/s (very slow foreign net) assuming nothing else was using data, but it seems to be chugging.

Gonna do some troubleshooting tomorrow and look at his I/O and make sure ports are set/allowed, etc as per the FAQ but does anyone play on a similarly terrible net? I expected there might be some chugging at the EC tunnel but I figured just basic Neriak and newbie zones would run fine. I know people are talking about being able to play on their cell phone data plans, but even those are better than the type of speeds his AFB is getting.

I'm hoping there is something on his PC transferring and using his already limited data availability, but it is possible that the game usage is a little higher than anticipated.

Min speed for classic was advertised as 28, it might be different here.

Everquest was one of the first online games I played back when I started out on a 33.2k Hayes modem, and it played fine right through until PoP on that thing. Then I upgraded to a 56k robotics sportster, then things started to fly ;D

i have fast(but shitty) internet in china, and because of firewalls, anti-hack(alleged) code, and the like on the eqemu and p99 servers, i must use a VPN to have a secure connection. you may try this and see if it helps. i use expressVPN currently, it seems to work. downside is high ping(300-600 typically) but a stable connection.
