Rolled an ogre warrior and want to raid, but is it a pipedream?

I made an ogre warrior, and plan on max leveling him asap. My main concern, though, is that I might be too late to get into a tanking position in a guild for raid content. I've never experienced end game in classic before, and I've always wanted to. Any comments or advice on making this happen, or is it simply a pipedream?
