When you show overt contempt for sports you are showing contempt for most everybody and that is problem with your social skills.
It's called being a snob. The disdain for working class culture among academics was part of the reason I choose not to pursue a formal higher education. I suspect this overt snootiness keeps many gifted working class kids from participating in higher education.

I grew up working class and was a boxer. I love Ice Hockey, Football, UFC, NASCAR, Motocross, and heavy metal, but I am also an academic and an intellectual. Many highly educated people have told me so, I just don't have the paper to prove it.
My oldest son is highly gifted earning math test scores putting him in the top tenth of one percent and placing 1st in regional Math Masters competitions. He also plays ice hockey so he interacts socially with the 'jocks' and the 'brains' preferring the company of the 'brains.'

Most of his 'smart' friends show contempt for sports which is a social problem since he is an athlete.

When a kids says, "Hockey. Meh. It is a bunch grown men with sticks chasing a black piece of rubber around a sheet of ice" he is saying in effect "What you love is obtuse and low brow and I don't care how that makes you feel." And that is just rude.

What a load of rubbish. Professional sports are just as middle-class as they are working-class. They are for idiots of all classes. ;)

Watching sports is for people who are too fat to play sports, but want to live vicariously. Affiliate themselves with a team so that they can experience accomplishment in their otherwise pointless existence. Go play football if you like football.

Or maybe there are many reasons why a person may like a certain activity. Boiling it all down to a single thing as if there are tens of millions of people that are too fat to play sports but want to live vicariously is the height of small-minded thinking.

You don't have to agree with everyone around you on every topic in order to get along. How often do these topics come up in a professional setting anyway? He must be one of those annoying people that wants to talk about sports 24/7. I enjoy sports and it doesn't cause me any trouble in my academic career. I thought everyone understood that it's generally good manners to choose topics of conversation that all involved are interested in. You don't go around talking to anyone and everyone about Everquest, do you? Does this mean there's disdain for Everquest culture?

When the Saints won the superbowl, New Orleans was at peace. I don't see any amount of alcohol, politics, guns, or camaraderie able to accomplish that again.

"hey I'm robbing you after that awesome game"

Take this for example. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftUR6AFTNMA) Kramer is a calm fan of sports who regardless of whether his favored team wins clearly is enjoying the game. Putty on the other hand is overexcited and popping off over a group of people who he's never met, likely never will meet, and who's victory/defeat won't impact his life in any way shape or form.

Its sports fanatics like that that bother me, who get visibly upset, shout at their TVs, break shit and get into fights because a group of people who happen to live in a region are competing for money against another group.

The only exception I can rationally give to this is people who gamble. If you have money on your team winning you have every right to be upset if your team loses since you are actually losing out when they do.

Football taught me things as much as school. I learned more with football than doing any differential or early 2000 programming language. It made me not a pussy. It made me able to get my ass up everyday and do my best. i strive to be better because working hard has payoff. Failure is a great motivator and success makes hard work worth it. I laughed off a broken finger one time. I taped it up and was in the next play. I felt like a norse God. Every male I've known who wasn't at least partially into sports has been a geek/dork/beta loser/has asperger's and makes other people uncomfortable. Every single one.

Guys are into sports in some capacity. That's all there is to it. Don't care if it's football, baseball, basketball, tennis, cricket, jousting, fucking frisbee golf, they're into sports in some way. It's been that way for thousands of years and it's still that way.

My point is if you aren't into sports, that's cool, quit bashing on the ones who do enjoy playing and watching these sports. Football is a pasttime of mine, and could have been a future scholarship for me before I broke my back in varsity high school. It was always a family tradition, and was held in good terms, we arent violent people, but we are a proud family full of athletes and academics alike. No need to bash one another, instead, lets just watch some football/or any other sport, and love the idea behind those men winning a big game like the superbowl. Fuck the patriots, but good going for them.

I dont like watching porn unless it is to figure out new sex positions that are actual viable, and not just for camera angles. Wouldn't mind making it but I'm sure the girl wouldn't care much for the idea other than for a private stash.

Injury here as well, but off-field and to my right leg. Pretty much tore it to shreds. Not a big deal mentally, considering I never wanted to play college sports. They were just fun experiences with friends, and looked nice to colleges as a peripheral interest. The injury wasn't going to matter to the schools I was interested in. Wound up in a very good school in the area that my parents would have never been able to afford straight up.

Being a fan has certainly had an impact on my life as well. Stats have amazed me since I got my first baseball cards. 1987 Topps! I still remember every card in the pack. I suppose I could have collected them and never cared about the watching sports, but that would be a bit unusual.

At various points when I was younger I played baseball, football, basketball, and was on the swim team. Baseball was my main thing, I played first base and batted cleanup for years. I don't have any problem with sports themselves.

That said, I absolutely do have a problem with the culture that has grown around them. I have a problem with the glorification and aggrandizement involved. I have a problem with people who play games being propped up as gods among men while people who work tirelessly to better mankind get ignored by the general population.

Meh. It's like any form of entertainment. Nothing more; nothing less.

I may not understand what anyone sees in watching sports, but I understand why they do. From time immemorial people have gotten a thrill at watching other people do stuff. Some people even like to watch people play chess. I'm a nerd, and I don't get that, either.

Add to that the social aspect of grouping together to watch sports, and I understand it a lot more. It's fun to get a group of friends together to do something... even (perhaps even especially) if that something is dull as dirt.

My illusion about professional sports was shattered waaaay back when the New Orleans Jazz moved to Utah. Until then I was naive enough to think teams' connections to their cities actually meant something. It was then that I realized that sports teams are like soft drinks. Nothing interesting about watching a glass of Coke fizz.

I still ask myself WTF Utahns know about Jazz.

Now you're getting into a totally different subject. If you object to organized sports on moral grounds you're going to have a very very very hard time finding any form of entertainment. Hollywood is full of rapists, pedophiles, drug addicts, drunkards, and outright thrives. Video games glorify death, violence, and occultism. Music is full of violent themes, drug use, pedophiles, murderers, racists, etc. Not just modern music either, all the classical composers were real pieces of crap too. Literature is the same. What would be a form of entertainment that has a clean record of all participants and producers?

The difference is that being a thug and a rapist is condoned and even seemingly encouraged within the world of professional sports.

I am very curious as to why you include drug use and occultism among those activities.

Occultism and drug use are things that are found to be morally offensive to most people. All of the forms of entertainment that I listed have in the past and continue to glorify thugs and rapists. Along with all other manners of morally reprehensible conduct.
