View Full Version : My dog and EverQuest

In 2000, I was eleven years old, and this was the first year I had seen and played EverQuest. One of my friend's dad had the game, and I was enamored by it. Most of the computer games I played were old RTS or crude first person shooters like Wolfenstein and Darkforces. I typically preferred console games on Playstation or SNES/Nintendo 64 at the time.

Once my next door neighbor got the game, I spent hours over at his house watching him play, and occasionally, he'd let me try the game and run around a low level warrior in West Freeport and East Commons. After some convincing of my family, who was unsure of the idea of paying a monthly subscription to a computer game, I finally received the Ruins of Kunark for Christmas that year.

Every time I played EverQuest in my dad's study on the 17 inch CRT monitor, my dog Shadow would lay at my feet. Shadow was a puppy who I got on Memorial Day of 2000. Close to fifteen years later, Shadow is still alive, but his time is coming soon. He is mostly blind, mostly deaf, has growths around his body, constantly itches and bites his paws due to itchy skin, and has gotten to the point where he needs to relieve himself to the point where he consistently will have accidents in my house.

Today, I signed a lease on a new apartment that starts in mid March. They do not allow dogs. I have made the decision that he will have to be euthanized by the time I move into this place, as it seems that is has become his time to go.

I just wanted to do an ode to Shadow and thank you for being part of my complete EverQuest experience. I think a lot of you will remember that the things that were happening in your life when you started playing EverQuest; these memories are often as vivid and nostalgic as the time we spent in game.

Sucks.. I had to put down my beloved orange tabby a few months ago due to some irreversible health issues that left him on death's door. You just have to remember that they lived a full, happy life during your time with them and you gave them the most love possible.

Putting down old pets sucks. We lost one this past year that passed in its sleep 2 days before we were going to put it down.

And for all the people either trolling or being crybabies because they aren't old/mature enough to have ever had pets, understand, or have to make that call... I feel bad for you.

It's a tough thing to have to do but it is often necessary as pets age. They weren't intended to live that long, and are one of the few animals who probably get to enjoy over extended life expectancies in good homes over being wild animal.

I'd like to offer a bit of advice.

Two things:

* Make really damned sure you have a vet who knows what (s)he's doing and gives a shit. I speak from personal experience here... I saw a vet not sedate a dog properly before administering the drug that stopped his heart. They're supposed to be unconscious first. He suffered before dying and it was awful to see.

* Stay with and comfort him until he's gone. It's hard but it's the least you can do for a pal.

I'm sorry about your dog. It's amazing how attached we get to our pets. It's really hard to say goodbye. :(

Well. It was not a decision I wanted to make. After visiting with the vet, he indicated that my dog will constantly be in pain until he passes away.

While you all can debate and think less of me, I'd rather my friend not live a life in pain until his heart gives out.

I'm pretty sure the most humane way to do this is to take him for a ride. Get out on the highway, let him put his head out the window and enjoy the breeze. Then give him a little push into an oncoming truck. Quick, relatively painless, gets to enjoy those last few moments.

Depending on particle size, smoke can be visible or invisible to the naked eye. This is best illustrated when weed in a 420blazeit marijuana cigarette. As the weed heats up, the products of combustion increase in size. The particles produced initially are invisible but become visible if the weed is burned or cooled rapidly.

Fine if you want to think that, but i'm thankful that the law makes a huge distinction between the life of a human and the life of an animal.

Pooch kooks who put animals over humans are truly sickening individuals, and i believe the vast majority of them exhibit anti-social behaviors and are borderline sociopathic since they go out of their way to constantly devalue human life.

Every time I've ever seen someone complain about Zanderr pulling too much he lessens his pull amounts or moves zones. Quality guy and if my dog was arthritic, blind, deaf, incontinent, covered in tumors, and suffering I'd euthanize him too. It's the humane thing to do. You're being selfish if you think it'd be better to keep your dog alive, unable to move and care for it self, than to end their suffering.

Not that you probably care because your post tends to indicate you have already formed your opinion about me, but I thought I'd at least share this part of my post about the power leveling I do for players.

Selling Power Leveling

Ethics Disclaimer
I will make all efforts to provide a service that is fast and efficient while remaining ethical. All attempts will be made to avoid interrupting other players' regular leveling experiences. I will always work with other players if there is a possibility they may feel interrupted by my power level session, and if a zone is too crowded, I may choose to end the session to ensure the client and other players all have the most positive experience possible. I may choose to end the session or deny service if the client requests I act in an unethical manner.

Except that was not the condition he stated. You are embellishing his post post for whatever reason. Perhaps blind guildmates defense like others here.

"He is mostly blind, mostly deaf, has growths around his body, constantly itches and bites his paws due to itchy skin, and has gotten to the point where he needs to relieve himself to the point where he consistently will have accidents in my house."

Then next sentence talk about putting dog down bc new apt doesn't allow pets. I hope there is more to the story, vet said quality of life will be awful, or only 2 weeks to live, etc... Laying down the facts as he did makes him look like a piece of shit.

Well, I was looking for an apartment that does allow dogs, and I've kind of been fighting everyone else around me that has told me his time has probably come. He has very poor quality of life and doesn't really acknowledge me when I'm around him anymore. His body is covered in tumors; his ACL is torn. He isn't really capable of much aside from eating, sleeping, and relieving himself now. It's very difficult to take care of him because I will come home to 2-3 accidents when I get home from work. He doesn't sleep through the night anymore and wakes up every night around 2:30 to 3:00 AM howling or whining. The vet said that any surgeries to improve his health would likely not be worth it due to his age.

Signing an apartment that starts in mid March was really the nail in the coffin on giving me a timeline that I have to say my final goodbye by, and it hurt a lot. However, I realize that he is in pain and has poor quality of life. He likely would not be able to adjust to a new home if I did move to a new place that allows dogs, which I will have to by the end of March. I believe that relieving the pain he is in through a peaceful manner is better than letting him suffer in pain until death. Obviously, it's not a black and white situation.

I'm not asking anyone to agree with me on whether or not I am making the right choice; I'm just saying a goodbye to my EQ duo friend.

When he was little he was super fast. My buddies and I always hung out in our neighborhood cul-de-sac and just dicked around on our bikes because we had nothing better to do in middle school.

One day, Shadow got out of my house when someone opened the door and took off running around the neighborhood; he usually didn't come when you called him outside. The closer you got to him, the more he would run away. Now my buddy had just gotten back from McDonald's drive through. I had the great idea that we would lure him back into the house with the a double cheeseburger.

I placed the double cheeseburger, still wrapped, in front of his face. He lunged so fast at that cheeseburger and took off with the wrapped burger in his mouth. When I finally caught him, I attempted to grab the burger out of his mouth which subsequently led to the wrapper ripping right off the burger instead of the burger being pulled out of his mouth. Shadow had the hugest looking dog smile as he ran off with an unwrapped double cheeseburger in his mouth. Obviously, he ate the whole thing. Sorry about your McDonald's, Julian.

That's a really sad reason to say goodbye to a friend you've had for the past 15 years. Either way, I sympathize. I got my dog (english springer spaniel) in 2000 and just had to put her down last year. Cancer was spreading and she'd no longer eat, no longer had the strength to get up and move by herself. We nursed her for two weeks with a liquid diet via syringe down her throat and carried her outside to let her relieve herself when we finally came to terms with the fact that she wouldn't get better, and you could see in her face that she lost the will to live.

Saying goodbye when the time came was by far the hardest thing I've ever experienced this far in life. Hope you made the right decision.

Sorry about your doggy, zan. Really sucks.

You gonna euthanize your parents when they get old too? You can't just throw a dog away like that fgt

Stop being a cunt.

at least take him out and feed him a filet mignon and shoot him yourself man. dont let the damn kennel do it. ive had to do this for old dogs who cant walk anymore, dogs who got hit by cars, etc. Living in the country teaches you life the hard way, but i think its better to do it yourself.

I hope you grow old and suffer for years in a place where nobody will put you out of your misery and you're unable to do it yourself.

Well... I guess if you "have" to.
You could always tie it in a gunny sack, and throw it off a bridge.

Sorry to hear about this :(. Shadow will find peace instead of pain, but a shitty situation to go thro.Had to do the same with my family dog a few years back, my Dad was heartbroken but understood it was the right thing to do.

Take care man.

Hey zander, fuck these people that are saying dumbass things. They don't know shit. So they say 7 to 1 years, your dog is over 100 and had an awesome life and best friend. How many 100plus people do any of you fucks know that are having a quality life? I would want to be put down than rather be in consistent pain and losing body functions. Once again fuck you trolls. Had fun playing with you all those years ago zander.

Hey guys, dogs don't have the capability to make decisions for themselves about their quality of life. We euthanize pets because we are their advocates- their well-being is dependent on us and it is up to us to make the tough decision when their life becomes nothing but suffering.

Don't listen to these selfish dogprolifer weirdo's. You know if your dog is no longer fully enjoying his life due to his medical conditions.

These are just basement dwellers projecting their fear of death because they never really lived.

If an animal or person is suffering, euthanasia is the moral thing to do.
