Boxing is classic. Everyone boxed back then and everyone knows it. Everyone had two phone lines and paid for two accounts, and used two different computers because you couldn't do it on the same pc. We all did this, so why not make this game more classic and let us run multiple characters on the same pc? Let us 1 man a hate raid if we want to just like we all six back in the day please. This is just unfair

Actually, when sony/VI offered all their current players a second account at a reduced price, running em on the same computer with one modem wasn't a problem.

if you didn't play on 56k AOL and buy your minutes for dial up through them then you never experienced everquest. If you never spent 10 minutes going to character select sceen to just be kicked off from an incoming phone call then you dont know what the fuck classic means. boxing back in the day? seriosuly? I revert back to my AOL comment, 1% had cable or DSL. Fuck off.

Lmao, this is why this community is so fucked up, is comments like this. If you didn't do what this guy did, it wasn't classic. And his fake statistics to support it.

I dialed up until 2001!
Aol, Juno ... Good times until
"MOM GET OFF THE PHONE!"
Once in a great while you could reconnect before LD was final and save the long load times!
But there was nothing worse than being in a good group and seeing your ping skyrocket over 1000 and your % slowly drop to zero.

We had dial up also bitd* and could play 2 computers at same time. (or box)
It was laggy on the 2nd computer so we'd F9 to top view for lag free heals.
=P
As they say, "Shit's classic"

Even using info on here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_access
would prove more than 1% of the known subs for dial-up / subs for broadband was what is that roughly 13.4% of dial up subs? Now that might not seem like a lot looking at %, but that is roughly 18.5 million people you didn't account for. Now I don't know how or if there is even a way to figure out how many people with dial up/broadband actually played EQ, but considering the annoyance of dial-up, and definitely on MMO gameplay, I would think the number was a lot higher than you imply. I am also trying to figure out if broadband was more common among, let's say, the US then or it's numbers.

Didn't get broadband until about 6 months into Kunark.

My AOL plan was set for unlimited starting in 1996.

Started on 56k here too right at the release of Kunark.
Very quickly we added a 2nd computer and 2nd basic phone line, xtra dial up connection with entirely different company on 2nd box wife played on.
Ended up boxing eventually but most of the time she played too so...
Cable came along... 6 more accts, she stopped playing, boxed 4-5 chars pretty regular in POP +....

Had dial up till 2005ish? All particles off all the time and was good at looking down and running in the Bazaar. Raids were rough in POP with all the shadows and environment shit.

Boxing is classic. Everyone boxed back then and everyone knows it.
Leaving aside the other (excellent) points about how not "everyone boxed", there's a more important point you're missing: no one free boxed back in the day.
If you wanted to box back in the day you had to pay extra for a special DSL/cable/ISDN line, and you had to pay for multiple accounts and multiple computers to play them on. That cost a significant chunk of change.
With Project 1999 though a modern computer, with a standard (no longer super expensive) DSL/cable line can run 6 "boxes" all from a single box. And if boxing was allowed all 6 accounts would be free. That's nothing like it was in '99, when boxing was extremely limited just becaus of the cost.

I was a broke ass college student in 1999 and I two boxed. In fact, there was broadband in my area in 1997. And I didn't even have to pay extra to hook up multiple computers ;)
And while I don't think allowing two boxing would be all that destructive to the server even - but yes you're right lots of free 6 boxing would be on the server and it would be utterly destructive. Do we really want sam deathwalker on this server?
The only gripe I really have about the no two boxing rule is that doing item transfers gets to be a pain in the ass. Paying for ports and rezzes or getting a guildy to do it aren't that bad, but transfers are just *groan* and kind of petty to not allow boxing. Shared bank while not classic would be a good compromise.
I'm sure there is a decent amount of two boxing with VPNs and multiple computers though. I've run into a lot of PLing druids where the PLeveler talks and the Plevelee barely does anything.

Yep, and this is why we need to be reporting anything suspect to the GMs. The ability to effectively police boxing and the use of third-party apps is what makes P99 special and not just another shitty MMO experience.

I I could box I would keep a toon permanently at the mob you wanted to camp 24 hrs a day and you would never ever ever get to camp it again.
And so would 40 other people at any given time.
There would be zero Eq for you, ever. We would own you.

iruinedyourday

Chardok would be nuts, but daym everyone playing an alt would have a main (or another alt) camped at a static camp, the entire time.
There would be nothing for the new players to ever do, would be brutal.

Lets allow MQ2 while we're at it. What good is boxing without the macros and plugins to go with it?
