Part of the problem is that Iksars are on the horizon. They make better Monks, Necros, Shamans, You can argue that they make better warriors too.

Another issue is that people can sell a character easy, and use it to twink up a new character in preparation for a raiding guild or kunark.

The other thing is that its eq. Its classic and it will happen. Trading/selling accounts is just an EQ thing.

If someone tried to get a serious bid on a p1999 account for real life money I think they would be found out. I mean if it did happen it would be under the table and between two people who already felt comfortable with each other... not like it can really be a random transaction.

As far as selling for plat/items I don't see the problem. People spend their time/resources to lvl up a character the same way someone uses their time to camp a rare spawn to sell the items. At least the people leveling up and selling the characters aren't sitting on the camps the rest of us want to camp for pp gain.. when we are just trying to gear out our own character. If people want to produce plat by doing their own thing and leveling up a character more power to them.

Maybe some people just enjoy leveling a lot more than camping a rare spawn - If I had the time and had a couple level 50s I would part for one down the line if I didn't use them anymore. It actually makes me realize that when I make an alt.. I should probably do it on another account just in case I do want to ditch him for some plat down the road.

Well stated. I have no formal education in economics myself, but I am curious enough to have researched something about the differences between Miltonian and Keynesian theories, read some books and blogs and even had the chance to see Paul Krugman speak live (he's extremely humorous in person).

My personal opinion on the current economic malaise is that it's just another cyclical downturn. America is still extremely rich in natural resources and educational institutions. We've been buying from the rest of the world on credit and we have some fundamental suppliers trying to advance profits faster than the economy, including finance, energy, education, housing and health care. Things simply had to correct and correction is never much fun for anyone, especially whoever is left standing when the music stops.

In American culture, we seem to love scapegoats so we try to find someone to blame for our misfortunes: Bush, Obama, bankers, real estate brokers, public sector unions, private sector unions, whoever. Sometimes individuals or institutions actually did something illegal and/or immoral, but most of the time there's a systemic problem. I think our ongoing boom and bust cycle is systemic and that if we want it to stop, we need to change our government to be more foresightful. I have absolutely no idea how to make that happen.

As to the original topic of selling characters for platinum or real dollars, I don't have much opinion. I don't think it affects game play all that much. Reasonably good players willing to devote a lot of time to the game will coalesce regardless of whether they leveled their own characters or acquired them some other way. There will be people who like to powerlevel if the reward is cash or platinum or just another level 50 character. There will be people who like to farm platinum whether the result is real life profit or just a huge number in game.

Compared to the real world, the Project 1999 economy is very simple and will inevitably balance itself. If anything gets too far out of whack, it won't be hard for the developers to adjust things. I think this thread is just grumbling over a small thing and the most interesting aspect is this sub-theme about the current real world economy.

Responding to a point earlier before the derail: it's true that most people buying a 50 already have one if they have the money. The problem comes from when friends buy accounts for their friends or people start PMing the seller in hopes of paying cash. Believe it or not, the RMT bans haven't stopped people from buying and selling plat, I've had people ask me to sell them plat while selling manastones or trying to buy RBBs.

I don't understand why people are making this an issue of economics. Any trading of accounts/RMT inevitably ruins a server's sense of community. How is a guild supposed to know that person A is actually person A and not somebody who has traded their account info for plat or swapped for another account? What stops a person from paying for another account once they get bored of their own character(s)? EQ wasn't easy and it was time consuming, but that one was of it's strongest points. Degrading it to a flavor-of-the-month character via acct trading should be a bannable offense.

It's essentially being PLed by a chinese gold farmer, except rather than paying RMT for it you pay in-game plat, either way it's wrong.

what I'm saying is this--Say I'm offering 40k for a level 50 stripped character. How long did it take to level that character to 50?

At least 10 days played time, if not more.

10 * 24 = 240 hours of IN GAME time spent levelling this character.

Most casters and even some melee can make upwards of 1k an hour.

40k / 1k = 40 hours of IN GAME time spent farming the platinum for that character.

Shit the high level farmer could offer twice as much and still be getting a good deal.

See what I'm saying?

This is similar to taking advantage of tribes in Africa to farm gold for greedy multinational corporations.

They *think* they're getting a good deal because 1) they have no other options 2) they don't have complete information

Well, most people selling accounts also just get bored of that character and already have an alt to play.

I wish I could take my mage off of my Paladin account and sell him off for some return. Of course I took more time leveling it than what I could have made in equivalent hours farming, but at least it's something.

Not everyone is getting ripped off.
