View Full Version : Built a supercomputer
I hadn't built a desktop in over 10 years, and only with my dad. In fact, I haven't owned a desktop in that long, been through several laptops, so getting a desktop is really nice. It was fun to get my hands on the hardware level since my only real focus in computer science has been writing software. Of course, it was a pretty straight forward process, and I'm very happy with the results. Linux installed in like half a second. I bought most of the parts locally and got a bulk homie discount, some of the prices were better than Newegg and Amazon. It was around 2 grand.

That setup looks pretty righteous. Is there anything you run that actually uses 32 gigs of memory?
16gb would be enough normally but I'm going to use it as a ramdisk

16gb is enough for even large RAMdisks, unless you plan to load an entire modern day MMO like gw2 or Rift on it.
I did a benchmarking video that showed a ramdisk vs samsung 840 evo a few months back.
Results were negligible.
Not that I'm thwarting you, I totally plan to jump to 32gb ram because ram is cheap. Just sayin you should do benchmarks and be sure that all the time spent working with ramdisks isn't pissing in the wind.

Looks similar to the build I'll be creating. I see you went with the i7, I made a few sacrifices to go with a bigger SSD, although it's still just saved in my newegg/amazon cart.
Intel i5 4670k CPU
Gigabyte GTX 770
16GB G.Skill RAM
Asus ROG Maximus V Mobo
Samsung Evo 840 500GB SSD
WD 2TB HDD
X-FI titanium HD soundcard
Corsair H90 Liquid CPU cooler
Seasonic Gold Rated 650W PSU
Windows 7 OEM (I like to have the DVD with serial key =p)
Asus Blu Ray/DVD player
Fractal Black Case with Window
Total cost is right around 2k for all of that maybe just a bit under.
Subject to change, the SSD definitely boosts the costs but cant underestimate being able to store top gaming titles on SSD instead of just OS. Would become eq god of zone dancing.

I've had mine for about a year, and his is new. Was about $175, which isn't bad for a desk this big w/ the hutch and drawers (although yes - it is particle board). Took quite a while to put together. Picked it up at Office Max, along with our new chairs!

That is a really nice case you got, and was the one I was going to get if I ordered online. I ended up with a cheap DIYPC case (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811353025) at the local store. I mean the one I got is still quiet and keeps things cool and hasn't really been an issue though.
Gold and modular power supply is a nice choice. That's another area I had to make small sacrifices in at the local shop. It wasn't too bad though using a non-modular power supply since I used almost all of the wires from it and bought a package of zip ties.
I see you went with the i7 haswell. Great choice imo. Future proofing yourself will pay off. This thing is a freaking beast. I used the stock cooler for a few days until my cooler master arrived and it was not too bad. Wouldn't overclock with it though. Super simple to overclock with the Intel XTU program, don't gotta fiddle with bios settings and can download profiles other people have made who have the same system as you. So good.

oh yeah i forgot i ordered one of the liquid close looped coolers for it, corsair H80i i think. I did a custom water cooling on my old 2008 system with 1/4" tubing, danger den heatsinks and dont even remember the brand of the water pump, but it was a beast. That being said I'm not dealing with the maintenance of a DIY watercooling system ever again. and even by doing water boiling to tubing then twisting metal clamps on them i STILL got leaks after 6 months, nothing to cause component failure but just a pain in the ass.

wow, that price is a steal for that processor!
I'm using a program called Primo Ramdisk, it loads and saves on startup and works like a normal thumb drive. I mainly got the 32gb of ram so if I played a modern MMO like EQN or Pantheon I could drop it into like a 20gb partition. Right now I have it sized at 8 gigs and put League in it (since its the only game Im currently playing), but that's a game you have to wait for everyone else to load anyway. It's just funny to finish loading while other people are still at 0%. I definitely noticed a sizeable speedup between ramdisk and ssd.

I was using Windows 7 but just installed Windows 8.1 now. I'm using some program called StartIsBack+ that gives a normal Windows experience (no metro start screen). I can still get to the metro screen with ctrl+windows key if I needed to. Really I haven't noticed any difference at all with Windows 8 once getting rid of the gimmick start screen, and I mean that in a bad way. Like 5 years and 0 improvements or cool features besides touchscreen stuff virtually no1 on a desktop uses cmon Microsoft.

Just in case anybody is reading/has been reading this thread and is getting the urge to build a new computer, but looking to save some money check this out:
The AMD FX-8320 processor is on sale for only $99.99 (in-store only) at Microcenter...Seriously..$99.99. I know there are a bunch of anti-AMD people out there, but honestly, this processor is an absolute monster in all reality, and for that price, it's unbeatable. Also, it has tons of overclocking headroom.
http://www.microcenter.com/product/401796/FX_8320_Black_Edition_35GHz_AM3_Boxed_Processor
I personally have the 8350 and it has been sheer bliss for me. Nowhere near as hot as I expected, and performs astronomically better in games than what is said on many websites.

Spent more time trying to get the radiator/fan for my CPU cooler in a good spot than I care to admit, once I saw that the tubing could swivel on the heatsink and rotated the radiator lengthwise I was able to remove a sound deadening panel on the top part of the case and mount it there.

Here's the GPU, significantly more money than I've ever spent on a GPU. Picked it out after reading alot of different reviews. The 4GB memory should benefit with my dual monitor set up.

Quite a large GPU

Fully built, I'll buy some sleeves to manage the cables by the gpu, damn cables are designed for SLI and always have some stupid second connector hanging off it.

Never understood or really cared to look up why they started making so many bottom mount PSU in cases. personally i just wouldnt want that extra heat rising up to my video card. Nice setup though.
Burn ubuntu and get that supercomputer runnin knuckle. It's lookin real clean with the cables even with the excess SLI
psu on the bottom really isn't too big a deal since it exhausts out the rear. might be better with the center of gravity too vs putting it on the top. only issue is if you put the computer on heavy long carpet or something

Real nice rig, Knock, but here's a tip if I may. Remove that unused block of hard drive cages. Taking out the unused drive cage will allow for even more air flow to keep your rig cooler.

I put it back till I can get the cables better, I'm not OCD but I'm something close, there's a bunch of jungle vine having ass cables back there being partially hidden right now.

I'm also going to buy some new cables for the GPU and some of the SATA cables look like shit that they included. Going to buy some nice clean ones. And going to order an extra intake fan for the front.
