View Full Version : Maintaining Classic Gameplay vs. Causing Inconveniences

There are certain aspects of the game / client that were disabled to maintain "classic" EverQuest. However, some of these items don't actually affect gameplay in any adverse way -- they actually have an opposite effect of inconveniencing players.

For example:

- Removing the compass: Changes nothing but causes an annoyance. All players have sense heading, and all players can press the button, but it's just a pain to waste your shortcut key and have to press a button when the compass provides the information in a more streamlined way.

- Removing the zone maps: Everyone knows how to use EQ Atlas -- and if anyone is lost, it's very easy to Alt + Tab out of the game and pull up the map. Why not save us the inconvenience and just enable maps back into the game? Again, it doesn't make the game "easier" because everyone has access to maps on the Internet.

These are not "gameplay" changes. Everyone has sense heading, everyone has access to EQ Atlas. It's just annoying to have to use those methods instead of the in-game improvements that were added to EQ natively.

If the developers really think these changes give us a "classic" emersion -- why not disable all the new UI"s and go back to the classic UI with 800 x 600 resolution? Maybe even force players to connect with dial-up? */end sarcasm*

But seriously? What's the harm in having a compass and maps? We already get these things anyway in a more inconvenient way.

The lack of a compass and map are two reasons why I love this game so much more than any other MMO

The better argument here would be why are things like Donal's BP allowed in the game unnerfed, when Verant later realized it was an OP item and changed it accordingly [something compounded here due to the length we've been in kunark].

Donal's BP doesn't get nerfed until Velious or later. That's game play issue.

I'm not even talking about things that affect gameplay. I'm talking about things that have zero effect on any players other than causing an inconvenience.

Dude, didn't you know this is Nilbogs project and you can FUCK OFF unless you like HIS vision of Sonys vision of Verants vision from 1999?

Trans locators vs boats. This is something that could use a revamp too. Boats were cool...14 years ago. :)

ya that shit shoulda been nerfed from the get go, atleast b4 velious release, whats hard in pve when all you need is 4 bps in rotation and you're immortal, kill anything, probably do sleeper if you have 10 bps in rotation right off the bat in kunark gear

staff of p99 has gotten the whole classic concept completely wrong, some stuff is just stupid and wasn't really suppose to be there u kno

What the lead designer of UO/SWG has to say on this subject:
The lesson here is that sometimes features that make things better for one player make them dramatically worse for another. Every time you make a design choice you are closing as many doors as you open. In particular, you should always say to yourself,I’m adding this feature for player convenience. How many people live for the play that this inconvenience affords?
Every inconvenience is a challenge, and games are made of challenges. This means that every inconvenience in your design is potentially someone’s game.http://www.raphkoster.com/2012/03/20/do-auction-houses-suck/
