>>>>>>>>>>>>>Please Dont Respond IF<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
- you have NOT listened to the albums Pet Sounds or Smile.
(blind, ignorant Beatle nuthuggers dont respond)

but the Beatles are more accomplished than the Beach Boys. if Brian Wilson never went crazy and lost his mind who knows what we coulda had. When Smile was being recorded the Beach Boys dismantled, who knows, maybe they could of put out more quality songs than the Beatles. Beach Boys were on the same evolution chart as the Beatles. Going from songs like "I wanna hold your hand" to "lucy in the sky with diamonds". Beach Boys did it first going from Surfin USA etc to Sloop John B etc..

Pet Sounds is as good or better than the White album, Sgt Pepper or any Beatles album.

Some people cant fathom this idea and i love arguing it

Hendrix doing "Watchtower", he basically took the song from Dylan, and made it his own.

The modern day equivalent to this would be Johnny Cash doing "Hurt", which was originally a Nine Inch Nails song. Trent Reznor even said: "That's his song now" because of how he took it and made it his own, doing it better.

That's a misquote. I never said Dylan was greater than Hendrix.

For clarification: Dylan's lyrical writings were better than Hendrix's, whereas Hendrix's guitar work was way better than Dylan's.

If songs were based on lyrical content alone, Tori Amos would be one of the top selling artists in the world, and no one would have heard of Beyonce or 99% of modern pop stars.

To look at it another way: ask most Van Halen fans which version they preferred: Diamond Dave led or Van Hagar, and most will tell you Diamond Dave despite the fact that when David Lee Roth was the singer/writer, it had better guitar work, but when Sammy Hagar was the frontman, they had better lyrical content.

It all comes down to personal opinion, frankly.

I've listened to the entirety of the Beach Boys songbook, and not a note of it speaks to me. For the Beatles, it's like the complete opposite. The Beach Boys seem eternally stuck in 60s normalcy, while the Beatles pushed forward. The Beatles were a lot more experimental with their music. The Beach Boys never seemed to escape their surfer poseur image.

I loved the beach boys when they were in that Full House episode and all the girls got to come up on stage and dance with them, was so epic.

Versch
10-25-2013, 09:25 AM
Don't know how you can consider Smile to be a Beach Boys album since it was the exact reason they split up.

Brian Wilson was a terrific songwriter (Pet Sounds is great), but he wanted to take the band in a progressive new direction while the rest of them wanted to play California Girls until the checks stopped coming in.

Klendathu
10-25-2013, 09:28 AM
The Beatles are one of the very few bands\acts ever that were really ALLOWED to experiment, to change their sound. Most folks that try to "evolve" are discarded once they step away from the sounds and stylings that made them popular.

With that said, I don't care for the Beach Boys, but there was indeed some musical genius in some of their later work. If you study it with an open mind, you can see it. IMO Beatles > Beach Boys, but I think I understand the heart of Susvain's argument.

Comparing Dylan and Hendrix is difficult. They do different things musically. But I believe Dylan is on record as saying that the Jimi version of Watchtower is superior. Hard to find covers that surpass the original.

Remember in high school when everyone thought their musical preferences could be defended with objectivity? And they would just keep talking and talking, thinking they were making convincing arguments, and the more they talked, the more you realized "This motherfucker really does not understand music."

Because if they did, they would listen to Zeppelin and The Clash.

Pretty sure most people are well aware of the history of the music business defrauding african american artists to repackage music to white audiences.

Not sure what your point is, are you saying that white people are required to include a research project on the history of appropriating black music and attached apology if they ever want to casually mention that they enjoy an Elvis song?

That is some hasbinbad level white guilt you got there.

nope. trace the roots if anything. don't have white guilt cause i'm not appealing for an appeasement of anything. shit happens, learn what and how it happened, and then make a better future in the present. most of the artists that were the roots of those groups were, likely, more proud that the music was continuing through time. some of the songs are seen as entities in themselves that live through the artists regardless of who's playing (much like hbb's take on "all along the watch tower")

and poem of Lady Day's by Frank O'hara (yea, i'm a poetry fag)

The Day Lady Died
BY FRANK O'HARA
It is 12:20 in New York a Friday
three days after Bastille day, yes
it is 1959 and I go get a shoeshine
because I will get off the 4:19 in Easthampton
at 7:15 and then go straight to dinner
and I don’t know the people who will feed me

I walk up the muggy street beginning to sun
and have a hamburger and a malted and buy
an ugly NEW WORLD WRITING to see what the poets
in Ghana are doing these days
I go on to the bank
and Miss Stillwagon (first name Linda I once heard)
doesn’t even look up my balance for once in her life
and in the GOLDEN GRIFFIN I get a little Verlaine
for Patsy with drawings by Bonnard although I do
think of Hesiod, trans. Richmond Lattimore or
Brendan Behan’s new play or Le Balcon or Les Nègres
of Genet, but I don’t, I stick with Verlaine
after practically going to sleep with quandariness

and for Mike I just stroll into the PARK LANE
Liquor Store and ask for a bottle of Strega and
then I go back where I came from to 6th Avenue
and the tobacconist in the Ziegfeld Theatre and
casually ask for a carton of Gauloises and a carton
of Picayunes, and a NEW YORK POST with her face on it

and I am sweating a lot by now and thinking of
leaning on the john door in the 5 SPOT
while she whispered a song along the keyboard
to Mal Waldron and everyone and I stopped breathing

I'd say the same of all the bands listed here. Funny how subjectivity works.

yeah but some things are just not debatable. there are bad opinions. for instance, 2 chainz blows.

being a fan of dubstep and of charles bronson is a contradiction.

It was only a matter of time before some intellectual trotted out the old saw, "White people stole black music."

Did Darius Rucker steal country? Did Sublime steal dub/reggae? Eminem stole rap too I guess.

Can an individual like a sound enough to make it their own? Or is it the property of white or black culture because one or the other performed it first? Songs can be and have been stolen, but music can't.

Stupid non-debate founded on a stupid non-premise.

We can no longer be friends.

I never said that. Now, I used to prefer the Hagar stuff, but as I've aged, I've begun to appreciate the Diamond Dave stuff more. The stuff with DLR was a lot more FUN than the stuff with Hagar. When Hagar was with the band, it was more of Van Halen messed up love balads and whatnot (although "Humans Being" rocked), but with David Lee Roth you had stuff like "Hot For Teacher" and "Panama", which were just loud and good and FUN.

tl;dr: I like Roth led Van Halen more.

love both groups, but you're right, if smile would've come out in full back then, who knows what pop would've done-- a group like animal collective might've happened in the 80s

wtf? im sorry no. Kraftwerk is not any good. At their time, sure, they were different and maybe you could say they were good. but judging them with todays standards and musicians...not very good.

this opinion is no bueno

what are the standards today btw? a handful of producers conglomerating and packing a few recording styles into a steaming rupert murdoch pile of shit

I think Darrius Rucker is guilty of far, far worse sins than stealing a genre of music.

you gotta get what Brian Wilson was: he was a barely functional dude who had some very strange ears. And it's magical, the stuff he managed to get out, before it all just got too much.

And for those who want to poke fun, yes, this is old school emo

and it kicks ass
