Soda but the regional dialect in Florida is coke

In New Mexico, everyone refers to a soda as "coke". Doesn't matter if it's Mt. Dew, Dr. Pep, Sprite, whatevs - they call it a "coke". So dumb.

In South Carolina it's coke, you have to specify what kind of "coke" you want if there are options.

I blame marketing, general stupidity and an unwillingness to change because it really is kind of dumb. (oh and the coca-cola factory being just a short ways away)

I've lived in Michigan almost my entire life and pretty much everyone says pop here, I say soda and get strange looks....but I think it is just because of the way I speak. I have a deep voice and sometimes words like pop are easy for people to misunderstand if I am not shouting.

pop, but i still say soda often too. Honestly though that has more to do with me simply not giving a shit about carbonated beverages than anything.

I also try to actively switch up my word choice, so i'll call it both daily.

Most people 'round here say pop though.

Back in the old days folks would go to the drug store and sit at the bar for "seltzer water" mixed with different herbs and extracts thought to give medical properties, this seltzer water was also known as "soda water" or "soda pop" due to the carbonation and bubbles it produced. This in time was shortened to just "pop" or "soda" in different areas.

The pharmacists grew tired of mixing these libations themselves so they hired men to take over this job, they were referred to as "Soda Jerks".

Calling all carbonated beverages "coke" is just ignorant, and I have never heard of that before.

I did the math once to scale up the study that found aspartame to be toxic to rats. To hit toxicity, it would require that a person consume in the neighborhood of 128 cans of diet coke at once to hit the toxic dosage (the rats were given a bolus dose of the aspartame). If you can do that, gg.

Also it's pop, you philistines.

Oh really, doctor? Let's see your chemistry credentials, any data not provided by the people who make the shit or the lobbyist controlled FDA.

In the end, it's your body. Drink turpentine and eat Vaseline for all I care. You'd be better off drinking regular Coke with it's 10 teaspoons (4.2g) of sugar per can than drinking aspartame.

You're a very hostile person. And if you'd really like we can take bets on who has stronger chemistry credentials ;)

And I notice you didn't give any data to back up anything you said. Because you don't know what they fuck you're talking about, and you want to keep guzzling your brain eating pseudo-sugar water guilt free.

"The only information that matters is the FDA, because it's 'Murican, because 'Muricah. Fuck yeah!"

By the way, go fuck yourself.

What does the National Cancer Institute have to say? Let's see. "There is no clear evidence that the artificial sweeteners available commercially in the United States are associated with cancer risk in humans" http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/artificial-sweeteners

Now, I know the NCI is part of the same government as the FDA so let's check American Cancer Society. What could they say? "Aside from the possible effects in people with phenylketonuria, there are no health problems that have been consistently linked to aspartame use."
http://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancercauses/othercarcinogens/athome/aspartame

Let's just go to a general review on peer-reviewed scientific articles and see what they have to say. "The data from the extensive investigations into the possibility of neurotoxic effects of aspartame, in general, do not support the hypothesis that aspartame in the human diet will affect nervous system function, learning or behavior. Epidemiological studies on aspartame include several case-control studies and one well-conducted prospective epidemiological study with a large cohort, in which the consumption of aspartame was measured. The studies provide no evidence to support an association between aspartame and cancer in any tissue. The weight of existing evidence is that aspartame is safe at current levels of consumption as a nonnutritive sweetener."
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17828671

I'll give you the point that some research has found some worrying links:
http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/early/2012/10/23/ajcn.111.030833.abstract

Though, even they had this as a conclusion "Conclusion: Although our findings preserve the possibility of a detrimental effect of a constituent of diet soda, such as aspartame, on select cancers, the inconsistent sex effects and occurrence of an apparent cancer risk in individuals who consume regular soda do not permit the ruling out of chance as an explanation."

I have now wasted too much time giving you data and sources. Have fun! ;)

No, they haven't. America, where you can pay politicians enough to make tobacco and alcohol, two proven killers that completely wreck a person's internal organs legal, is not the entire fucking world. 'Muricah.

Yup, it's all an American conspiracy.. Except that aspartame has been found to be safe for human consumption by the regulatory agencies of more than 90 countries worldwide. It is probably the most thoroughly tested and studied food additive on a global scale, and its safety is 100% clear cut.

The European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Food evaluated aspartame thoroughly, (http://ec.europa.eu/food/fs/sc/scf/out155_en.pdf) and they found over 500 papers on aspartame published between 1988 and 2001. It has been studied in animals, in various human populations including infants, children, women, obese adults, diabetics, and lactating women. Numerous studies have ruled out any association with headaches, seizures, behavior, cognition, mood, allergic reactions, and other conditions. It has been evaluated far more extensively than any other food additive.

When new rat studies by the Ramazzini Foundation in Italy (http://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/topics/topic/aspartame.htm) appeared to show an association with tumors, the European Food Safety Authority examined Ramazzini’s raw data and found errors that made them discredit the studies. Their updated opinion based on all the data available in 2009 said there was no indication of any genotoxic or carcinogenic potential of aspartame and that there was no reason to revise their previously established ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) for aspartame of 40 mg/kg/day. Studies have shown that actual consumption is well below that limit.

People who are absolutely convinced they get adverse effects from aspartame have been proven wrong. For instance, the New England Journal of Medicine published a study (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3657889) of people who reported having headaches repeatedly after consuming aspartame. When they knew what they were consuming, 100% of them had headaches. In a double blind crossover trial, when they didn’t know what they were getting, 35% had headaches after aspartame, and 45% had headaches after placebo.
