Summer school is never for the smart kids. It is usually for the gamers/flunkers that don't want to get an internship or go the social route and travel.
Either you get excited that real school is out and you can take 1 or two classes, pretend to be productive, and sit around and play a game 24/7 or you are trying to make up time because you took too few hours or flunked out of too many classes the semester before.

One of these days you'll figure out how college works for advanced classes and realize that, in order to not spend 8+ years getting a degree in something worth a damn, you'll take summer classes. Something for you to ponder while you and your mom sit and try to figure out how to get the grease stains out of your fry cook shirt.
Blah blah blah
I'm above a 3.5 GPA at a ARWU top 25 school... but yea, taking classes because I'm a big failure.... OR I take them because I want to graduate with a double major in 3 1/2 years instead of 4 and get a start on grad school. Could go either way though I guess. Way to throw out broad, and wildly incorrect generalities.

Shame on you for your assumption. With such a high GPA I would've expected that you learned all this already.

Often times, young adults share the same experiences of such things like college and consequently the dreaded compressed summer classes in attempts to maintain or expedite their progress in obtaining a professional degree.
Seeing as how the majority of the population of this server tends to lean more towards the adult age, the expectation of the intended definition of the words used would also lean towards these shared experiences. That's a pretty reasonable assumption and the amount of trolling in this rants and flames thread is subpar.

That said, I did parse your message — and no, your assumption is not a reasonable one. There is no reason to believe that a "majority" of this server is of one age group or another, and again, it's pretty clear in the context of my original post that the "summer school" I was referring to was of the remedial variety.
If I may expand on this just a bit further, you should remove the stick from your ass at your earliest convenience.

Actually... I moved from KY to Ohio years ago - in high school. My JR. High in KY offered a year early Algebra I class so that as a Freshman you could jump right into Geometry, then AlgII/Trig and Pre-Calc your Junior year, as a more advanced Calc class was offered that route.
However; the Ohio school I went to didn't 'recognize' that 'credit'. But.. in order to allow me to progress as needed and not bore me with a whole additional year of Algebra I, they allowed my to take a summer school class of Algebra I to 'get the credit' officially in Ohio. The teacher and I knew, all that was expected of me was to turn in some homework and take the tests.
I was pretty nerdy at the time, to be honest. The summer class was a silly breeze.
But since I was in a new school system, I was happy to just hang out for the 2 hours a day to get to know some people. Ended up making a few friends which in turn got my attention more focused on girls and weed
But I still did ok :) - but wasn't quite as nerdy after that, lol.
So.. yeah - its' possible a summer class, even in High School is more than just 'make up'.

Hey now I said gamers/flunkers meaning gamers or big failures. You don't have to assume I meant you were a big loser and get all defensive buddy.
As for the other guy talking about these advanced classes... wow you must be real smart.
Advanced classes in college.... guess I missed those I just took the normal ones that gave me a degree and led to a real job. Plus out of my friends that have graduated college only the ones that can't get a job have gone on to grad school because they can't make it in the real world yet.
For some paths grad school is a must right after undergrad, but for the majority getting job experience and taking grad school while working is the way to go and will get you a lot farther.
It also allows you to know what you are doing and what your career path is if you work before grad school. In my case I'm taking the CFA which easily trumps a grad school degree and I'm glad I didn't waste my time with grad school before I knew exactly what I was interested in.

Thats because you don't know much about the CFA. You have to take 3 tests which can only be taken in the summer once a year (besides the 1st test which can be taken summer or winter) and there are a limited amount of people that can pass every year worldwide, meaning there is a curve on the test.
There are about 10 books per test. It ends up taking most people 5-10 years to pass all 3.
Anyone in the finance industry would take a CFA over any grad school.

Depends on what you want I guess.
In IT many places would much prefer their Cisco admins to have a CCIE over a Masters in MIS or whatever they call it now.
Same with say - a Unix Admin. Experience means a LOT there, as it takes very little and just one wrong move to hose up a Unix server
rm -r /
oops.
So it just might depend. I never did finish college personally. Ended up party-ing too much after High School and having kids too early. But I guess tenacity and experience made up for a lot of it. That being said, I'd still like to go back and get at least a four year degree. But in a way I'm hesitant - I don't ever want to manage people, I've done that before and it sucks.
Managing machines - for me - is a lot, lot more rewarding and I'm better at it. I'm too laid-back to manage people. Seems like anyone in IT with more than an undergrad degree are all MBA's.

100% Cisco admin is way more valuable than a graduate degree. There are things you NEED a cisco admin to do for legal reasons. You don't even have to show up to an interview to get 6 figures with that designation.
Grad school... pshh means nothing unless you are already high up in a company. I got my job over someone with a grad degree 1 year after graduating with my undergrad because I had a years experience at a brokerage firm. That 1 year gave me more knowledge of how things work than he got from books.

I mean, I guess it depends on what you want - but I think you open yourself to a higher level of opportunity with most graduate degrees. With a Cisco or CFA certificate you'll get a job, but you limit yourself to a job in the respective fields. You can do just about anything with a MBA or JD though.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to hate on professional certificates - I think they're great if that is what you want to do. I just think that saying they're hands down more valuable than a graduate degree is kind of silly.

In a lot of fields it is easier to get an entry level position, especially in today's economy, without having a graduate degree. BA starting salary is lower then a MA or equivalent, which makes it easier to employ you.
I interview and recommend candidates for my school district, and currently am under instructions to only seriously consider those with a BA/BS.
There are many industries that are similar.
Obviously, if you want to pursue a career in law/medicine/etc. you need to get an advanced degree even to qualify for the minimum entry positions in that field.
Another thing to consider is that many top graduate schools in most programs (including MBA, MD, JD, etc.) give great consideration to older candidates who have work experience in a related field. If you have such experience your chances of getting into a top program are far greater than most 22 year olds coming straight from undergraduate programs.
It all really depends on what you plan to do, and what your options are. For many undergrads it is advantageous to go into the work force and gain experience rather than proceed directly to graduate work.
Also, when I was an undergrad I always took summer classes...I never once referred to it as "summer school"---though I guess it is. The term "summer school" is permanently associated with remedial forced classes for failure during the regular term in American English. I always took "summer semester courses."
