View Full Version : Train!

Let's face it.
Everyone loves a train unless it's happening to them and or their friends / guildies.
Being able to train people in MMO's back in the day was like living in the wild west. They're used by despicable baddies and greedy assholes. But sometimes, a valiant hero out for vigilante justice can use this brilliant tactic to smite his enemies.
If you were in top tier on live from Classic to Luclin, you must know of a time when a valiant guild Monk raped the guild competition who repeatedly held you and your guild down. Shareth your epic train stories... tales of when the good guys become the Conductors of the 6 hour Corpse Run Train for your enemies.

I trained the shit out of people on live... even to this day.
But I enjoy creating ways to catch trainers on P99, especially when I finish the system I'm working on :D

When: 2003
Where: Ssra/Cursed Area
Who: Rodcet Nife guilds Anthology (me) and Forsaken (enemy) <-- note GM Feiel was a member of Antholohy :P
Why: Anthology was clearing to Cursed, Forsaken appears in mass and the zone crashes. Forsaken is first to mobilize upon zone up and we (antho members) log in to find their entire guild sitting on us.
How/What Happened: Every single member of my guild went Froglok illusion and ran in every direction imaginable. Deaths ensued as we collected mobs and brought the entire zone down on Forsaken.
Regret: No. Froglok trains > Foreskin..ahem Forsaken.

Bah Rog, that's cause you're a responsible mind behind the P99 Project.
I liken a Train to seeing nature in the raw. Like a lion killing a gazel. Training is Taboo. But deep down in everyone's heart is an FD button dying to be clicked with half of Karnor's Castles on you.

When: Luclin Era'ish
Where: Vex Thal
Who: Nameless Order? iirc
Why: They fucking CoH'd the entire guild ahead of us.
How: Me and my fucking FD Button
Regret?: I died in the process but only after they were wiped clean from the zone. No one managed to camp.
This is what I looked like when it was all said and done:

My guess would be something along the lines of a report being generated any time a single player winds up on the hate list of like 12+ mobs at once.
I imagine that would be an easy thing for the server to catch.

Then you get the super train, where you aggro 11 mobs, and pull them on your target who's already in combat, resulting in them getting banned for training

I absolutely loved watching people get trained intentionally back in the day, especially by Sergeant Slate in the EC tunnel. I always wanted to get to a high enough level to do it myself (I was pretty bad and didn't realize low-leveled players could train people effectively depending on their class). Now I play a Bard but I'm too paranoid about the responsiveness of the GM's to training to ever do it myself, plus I would just feel guilty, especially when knowing that people kill themselves over MMO's.

So you admit to being a hypocrite? That's cool.
As for your "system" to catch trainers, good luck with that. Can't wait to hear what happens when a train is detected, because if aggro gets locked or wiped or whatever then that's quite the departure from classic. One of the things I couldn't stand about EQ2 was the "safety rails" put on everything, including aggro-locking.
If I delve into a dungeon, I want to feel fear -- not just fear of the mobs, but the fear of other people's stupidity. Start putting safety rails on everything and suddenly P99 is EQ1 lite.
