A serious post about duping

Before we begin I have no solid proof that the "DDOS" lag we are getting is in actuality a group of people duping items using crashed zones.

I also want to acknowledge that I am an inflammatory personality and most of my threads turn into a TMO V FE thread or whatever, this is something I would like to avoid.

To begin, Sirken admitted during my interview that the server has an unfixed dupe and he is closely monitoring it, I believe that there is another dupe out there and it involves crashing the zones to duplicate high end items.

The reasons I think this lag is a dupe are as follows.

1. A new RMT website has sprung up recently giving rock bottoms prices of plat(I won't link any RMT websites in this post but a simple google search can confirm)

2. A slew of very high end items have currently been put up for sale,
Example 1. http://www.project1999.org/forums/search.php?searchid=2342871 Here is EIGHT AoNs being sold by Eight seperate sellers since the beginning of July
Example 2. http://www.project1999.org/forums/search.php?searchid=2342874 Here are SIX Thex daggers sold in the same time period by different sellers, some are selling both Thex daggers and AoNs.
This does not include the high end items being auctioned in the tunnel as well as the influx of characters seen using AoNs as of late.

AoNs are specifically very rare items. Here is TMO's entire history of AoN on our website.

Everyone of those AoN's can be accounted for not a single one has hit the guild bank nor has anyone gone 24 hours with out being rewarded to a member of the guild.

Now multiple guilds have slain Cazic Thule and multiple guilds have collected AoNs over the years, IB comes to mind. Most of these AoNs can be accounted for on there respective players or sold over a year ago.

3. This is where you have to imagine with me a bit, Rogean* mentioned that the information being sent to the server that is causing the lag is instead of normal "junk" information that a DDOS uses is actually corrupted EVERQUEST information being shot into the server at a high rate. I am not a computer person whatsoever but this everquest information being sent may be some sort of program or exploit used to duplicate an item.

4. Lets return to the items being duplicated for a moment, Every auction for an AoN/Thex is looking for High end accounts and/or Large sums of platinum. This what I think they are doing.

If they duped Fungi tunics or Heiro Cloaks they could effectively stay under the radar as these items sell for a decent amount and are very common. The fact that they are some of the most expensive items in the game tells me that.
A.They can only do this for a limited time only and need to make as much plat as possible.
B.They know that the increased lag will draw the attention of the server/staff who will fix said exploit.
C. They are dumb

I think these people are very smart people and laundering these items who will in all probability being taken away by staff, In exchange for items they can sell quicker to the mass via RMT sites.

Selling an AoN for $500 i doubt many people would spend that but, turning it into 500k PP or an uber account then selling the plat piecemeal or the account at a "loss" seems like a better solution.

So in summery I don't think this is a TMO,FE,IB,whomever DDOSing the server because they are angry nor do I think the people who are doing this are in ANY of the top guilds. It's not because of anger it's not because of banned accounts(zipzop is part of this he was a distraction that we all ate up) This is money pure and simple.

This will not stop unless the exploit is fixed or if people wise up and stop buying platinum from these people.

For what it's worth, I agree with you.

This isn't a normal DOS. The server lag comes in spurts, and it's over in the matter of seconds. If what you say is true and what's being sent is valid EQ packets, then it's even more possible that duping is occurring. Why? Because that's all the game is. All there has to be is one set of packets that, when sent, say "loot item X". Or, "trade item X". Or, "Pick up item X". If any of these actions send the value of X from the client, you can tell the server all kinds of crap.

Is that the problem? God, I hope not. That would be easy to validate against the DB (very similar to programming against a SQL injection). There's also a chance that this is akin to a Buffer Overflow exploit, where someone is pushing all kinds of data at the server to overflow some counters to turn item X into item Y.

Anyway, my main point is that this is either a very weak attempt at a DOS, or it's directed in such a way that the dupes are the goal. A *real* DDOS wouldn't last for 5 minutes at a time. It'd take the entire server offline for a week(s). Like what happened 2 or 3 years ago.

I also find the lag highly suspicious- it doesn't seem to be aimed at the worldserver in general- it seems to be targeting specific machines.

As far as I'm aware this server is (or was, last time I heard) a cluster of five servers that host various parts of the world. (and by world I mean; the world server, the zone servers, and potentially the login as well)

Some days I've been able to zone/talk/etc just fine- while people on Vent were bitching about "the lag"

This could be for a variety of reasons, but I think it's something like this.


Somehow if you can target a specific server and lag it so it can't talk to the world server you can duplicate an item. As in, either you can force a character not to save or a corpse not to save properly. All the different zones are located on different servers- so the whole world (all tells/whos/etc) can be up while certain other zones are getting hammered to shit. I've also noticed people claiming that login is down while other zones and the world server itself are functioning perfectly normally.

This leads to the other question, why are legitimate looking EQ packets flooding the server? Only a DDoSer with a knowledge or grasp of the EverQuest protocol would be able to craft such an attack, and the fucked up thing is- EQ is UDP for most things in-game. UDP is connectionless and easy to spoof. The attacker could potentially make it look like the entire internet is at some point attacking the server because there is no proper connection state handling in UDP like there is in TCP. So they could be doing it to harass, and again- they could be doing it to lag a zone out to get a very specific outcome.

It would probably be trivial if you had any experience with the EQEmu UDP protocol to send enough fake (and spoofed) data to the server to make it lock up at will, and they probably don't need more than 10-20 computers to accomplish this, as the spoofed packets probably trigger such cpu-heavy EQEmu functionality that the threads routinely deadlock.


A solution? some sort of firewall rule to drop all UDP packets not associated with an already logged-in account. I'm pretty sure the login process is partially TCP based. So the loginserver would have to add an exception to iptables each time someone logged in, and remove it when they left to allow only legitimate UDP packets through. Otherwise the attackers would have to guess the source addresses of other clients and that would be a bit more difficult and could potentially give them away.

Also, one last thing it could be is a mass brute-forcing attack. This loginserver doesn't have any means of locking out an IP address for too many or too frequent failed login attempts. There was a public EQEmu loginserver that I modified to do this- but we're still on the old, and very private EQEmu loginserver from the original days of the project.

I was in EC the other day on my 60 chanter.. selling shit, buying stuffery. For whatever reason decided to buy a batfang headband for a hell of a deal - 75 plat.

I went to do the transaction and the server was spiking hard. I was furiously clicking with my 75 plat to open the trade window and it would, but then open up showing i put 0 plat, so hit cancel. Then he would open up trade window like he had put an item in there but it was blank. Finally after a few minutes I completed the transaction and went on my way. I logged off about an hour and a half later.

Logged on the next day and had the extra 75 plat sitting on my cursor and the item in my inventory, and the guy said he too had the 75 plat in is inventory and the batfang headband on his cursor.

So.. it can happen. Imagine if i was boxing and just trading an AON and 500k between each other and happen to dupe that. Fungi, Donals BP, pick your poison. I hope we are monitoring high value trades between the same characters or something of that nature.

You would think there would be a "created" date on items, if they can track the item id from person to person the ID had to start somewhere. I cant see it being too hard to look and see if 8 AoNs have been created in the last 3 weeks etc.

However, this might not be the case, not really sure what information the devs have available to them.

Is it not possible to either add a created date for any item in a characters possession, or alternately create a difference log?

I'm certain the developers can run something analogous to "Select * from Characters where Items_in_inventory like (id of AoN or misc items here)" and compare it to the previous day, etc. This could be automated, until true functionality to stop duping could be added in.

Or hell, generate a GUID and assign one to every item every dropped, although maybe this is too resource intensive.

Player trades in zones when you lag the worldserver could really easily dupe items now that you mention it. Player profiles are saved on the worldserver I beleve, so this could very well be the cause of all of this.

Items aren't tracked client-side. If the ddos/lag is allowing for dupes, it's an issue of zone-to-database sync.

I'd imagine they could run a query to obtain the amount of fungis or other items on the server, then compare it with another query run a few days later and see if the numbers add up when compared to amount of possible spawns and drops.

Would be an easy way to check for mass duping I'd think.

but smart people would be very careful about duping so it wouldn't arouse suspicion. I think the AoN thing might do them in though. We can account for the ones we have- and not many have slipped through our fingers since we started getting them.

If what was said above is true, then there is indeed widespread duping going on right now.

Rogean, could you please look into this? I know in the beginning the lag seemed targeted at messing with streamers or just TMO in general but I think that was just for the lulz. If it's done right I bet with very few machines you could generate this sort of lag if you knew which packets to send.

To protect the integrity of the server, I like the idea of shutting off player trades until this is sorted out. This amount of duping (if that is really what is going on) is creating a long term economical mess. It may also get legitimate players banned or suspended for purchasing duped items.

The classic solution would have been "server down" statuses on our server select screen and a rollback, once it was determined what was occurring. I'm not saying we need something as drastic as that, but something should be done. The longer it goes on for, the more elaborate this web of duping/trading is going to become and there is bound to be shit that is missed in the thousands of legitimate trades occurring.

Forums are probably on the same server as login and whatever zones are being duped in. A trade dupe can happen in any zone, and I would imagine they would use the lesser used zones on the same machine as the forums and loginserver.

A side note, and this might add to the thought that people might be duping in zones with a lot of people, but I don't experience many (if any) DDOS's during off-peak times. I play during Australia/Asia time and have only seen an attack happen in the morning or late evening. Admittedly, I rarely play now due to the attacks, and when I do play I just play my alt and am afk reading half the time.

Of course, the attacks occuring during peak times (and the peak fringe) could simply be because the attacker(s) play during peak time. But it might also be that they need to have a lot of people trading to avoid suspicion, or that (I don't know **** about computers) they need to have a lot of people online filling server with some amount of data to be able to force enough additional data through something or other...big IT words...somebody help me here

Thing is, no-one can know if they've bought a duped item at this point. So its just a bunch of random accounts selling a bunch of items they should not have.

I don't think this problem should have been pushed under the rug so quick so to speak.

Red has considerably less population, high ticket items like aon, tstaff, and others are more well known then im guessing the 1000+ blue players. If something like this is happening on blue, Someone is surely trying to cash in on red. If it isn't being done already, Just peak around red for things out of place. The minute someone new has a AoN, tstaff, anything uniquely rare the entire server knows within hours.

Diablo II was a good example of this, When the major dupe/item creation exploits hit in the many various waves. People had no issue legitimately buying them with game currency or real money off websites. It became a part of the game, But DII was on a much more massive scale. It will be much easier to simply remove these items if they are in game once tracked down. For those who did buy a high ticket item recently for a good deal or from a unsure source I would probably be re-thinking that decision and hoping you aren't a tinfoil hatter

Oh yes, Never mind the fact that red plat is a 1:5 ratio. Everything is more expensive, Rarer etc. I am simply saying if money is being made on blue doing this, There are PLENTY of people on red who would buy just to get ahead in the game. If you think it would be a waste of a time to do this with a ratio like that, You just have no idea of the concept of quick item conversion plat to money if they want to get all items gone asap.

For what it's worth, I agree with you.

This isn't a normal DOS. The server lag comes in spurts, and it's over in the matter of seconds. If what you say is true and what's being sent is valid EQ packets, then it's even more possible that duping is occurring. Why? Because that's all the game is. All there has to be is one set of packets that, when sent, say "loot item X". Or, "trade item X". Or, "Pick up item X". If any of these actions send the value of X from the client, you can tell the server all kinds of crap.

Is that the problem? God, I hope not. That would be easy to validate against the DB (very similar to programming against a SQL injection). There's also a chance that this is akin to a Buffer Overflow exploit, where someone is pushing all kinds of data at the server to overflow some counters to turn item X into item Y.

Anyway, my main point is that this is either a very weak attempt at a DOS, or it's directed in such a way that the dupes are the goal. A *real* DDOS wouldn't last for 5 minutes at a time. It'd take the entire server offline for a week(s). Like what happened 2 or 3 years ago.

I'm an exceptionally new player (just started less than a week ago) but I've noticed the DDoS strikes happening during a time window of about 6 through 9 PM, Pacific Standard Time (I live in CA state). There's activity a bit outside of that time frame, but during those 3 hours we see it for certain.

From what was previously mentioned in the thread, the people doing the DDoS strikes seem to benefit from duping items and do so intentionally during a time when there's a lot of trading activity going on from EC, as well as having the most population at that time.

Sure, it hurts the server as it's making players disgruntled when the population is at its highest for the day - but they limit the strikes for a few hours which is enough for the large percentage of players to chalk it up and continue playing when everything's great for the remaining 20-21 hours of the day.

High reward, minimized risk, extremely minimized damage to their seller base.

At this point only a complete pants-on-head retard would buy an expensive item at EC tunnel from a low level unguilded alt as opposed to a guilded high level main character. It's in the best interest of both the buyer and seller if you crack down on deleting items with identical numbers on routine server-wide sweeps.

Let the chips fall where they may and nuke the items. Not doing so will have its own larger price to the server.

On the topic of DDoS'ing.. I'll say this (and I'm not confirming nor dismissing any claims right now), but think of this. If someone wanted to Dupe, they do it for personal gain.. whether to sell or whatever. If they're going to sell it, they want people playing the server to sell it to. If the DDoS'ing was entirely for the purpose of duping, then why would they only ddos (confirmed by my graphs) during prime time? They would benefit more by ddosing off prime time, duping items then, causing less inconvenience so that people aren't getting fed up, so they have more clients to sell to.

Just my immediate thoughts, so with that known I still have to consider that the DDoS is intended to hurt the population of the server as much as possible, for what reasons are still speculative.

Again, I'm not confirming nor dismissing any theories atm.
