View Full Version : Hardcore vs. Casual vs. Entitled, in a nutshell
Tecmos Deception

Hardcore players on p99 are here to work for the things they really want. They tend to be willing to grind/farm/track/whatever, even if that activity isn't a hell of a lot of fun in and of itself, in order to achieve the end results that they are really after. They generally like to talk about how the things they have took dedication and effort to come by.
Casual players on p99 are only here to have fun. They tend to only engage in activities that are fun in and of themselves. They aren't against grinding out a level to ding the next one or farming some PP to buy a new piece of gear, so long as the grinding/farming itself is still generally fun in addition to the end result of dinging/new pixels/whatever. They generally like talk about nostalgia and having fun in p99 as a break from the real world.
Entitled players on p99 are only here to lie. They tend to not work for end results, using the excuse that they are "casual" players and that they "have a real life bro." But they really aren't casual, because casual players wouldn't get all butthurt when the hardcore players get 99% of the pixels. They like to talk about a million different things that they think should be different on p99, with topics ranging from server resets to PLs/twinks to changes to the raid scene.
Not everyone fits exactly into one category, of course. Personally I'm a little bit entitled (I'm human, I'm selfish, I want stuff for me), a little bit casual (I won't go to ANY means necessary just to achieve a goal), and mostly hardcore (I grind levels in places that are the fastest if not the most fun, I farm platinum, I anticipate my destination more than I enjoy the ride there, etc.)
Company is here, post cut short OMFG.

May as well rename the "entitled" category to "players who just want the server to be classic". I'm not sure why wanting to improve the raid scene is mutually exclusive with wanting to earn mobs, but hey, you can believe what you want (obligatory smiley to make this seem less aggressive: :))

Server is classic, other than variance and no weekly respawns (not counting dev bugs that would be classic if they could/have fixed them)

Not really classic when been on kunark farming for 2 years.
How many donals BP's were around in classic before they got nerfed?
Etc, etc, etc
Not having correct timeline screws up a lot of shit.

Correction, server has mostly classic mechanics.
Mechanics != Experience

Some quick differences between Classic and P1999
- Classic interface had one chat window
- Cell phones were not widely used for batphone during Classic era
- Limited use of teamspeak due to 56k connections and shitty computers
- Play nice policy was actually enforced
- Classic didn't have Kunark out for 2 years
- Server resets with spawns on Classic

1) would be fixed if they could fix it.
2) is not a server problem
3) is not a server problem
4) is not a server problem (that is a GM problem and from some classic recollections it's as classic here on P99 as some of the live servers)
5) kunark is classic, classic is classic.
6) is a server problem.

Tecmos troll thread fails bc its in RNF instead of server chat. If it was in SC then casuals would see it n add thier opinions ab how dumb/wrong your "definitions" are.
Here mostly hardcores or desperate at work people dont really care bc we alrdy kno where we fit in. Movin along.....

- toss in the leniency with respect to cheating/exploiting as nonclassic. Players were banned outright and guilds were disbanded for ninjalooting another guild's corpse, whereas here they're just slapped on the wrist for SEQ/MQing and even duping (though the punishments have changed as of late)
- The variance isn't off by a little; for certain mobs it's 4x as high as it was on live. Now with the added variance it's only exacerbated.
- NPCs don't aggro on pop. This one really ticks me off, because a very tiny subset of douchebags who abused third party programs (and poopsocked) caused a change in mechanics to every single NPC in the game. Just the mere fact that something like this happens shows that the GMs do -- at least in some way -- pander to a certain small selection of players and these players' antics force the entire server to sway from the 'keep it classic, stupid' mantra of this server.
As a whole, the little things that make up the game have taken a turn for the better (read: classic); mage pets aren't insanely OP and the boats work! Even the things we can do without, like the hybrid penalties are in place. Yet when it comes to raiding, and all things that encompass it, things have actually steered seriously off course and in the opposite direction.
People think that those of us bitching do it to get the rules and mechanics twisted in their favor, but that's just not true at all. The reality is that the rules and mechanics have been twisted in favor of a very small group of people and in a very unclassic way.

Actually it is a server problem because the experience of classic EverQuest involved lack of cell phones and playing with 56k connections. The mechanics worked back then because it was much harder for people to organize, mobilize, and hell, zone fast enough to take all the raid spawns.
Implement simulated long ass zoning time to be more classic?
Flag all messages as same type so even if a player has multiple chat windows they still all get flooded into all windows.
