If you get reported and can't pass the box test you will get banned. You can petition it on the forums and get it reversed, however, if you can prove your case. sounds more of a pain in the butt than its worth.

I know many people that have their spouse/children log in on one computer to mostly AFK, it is allowed from my understanding but it'd be impossible to prove innocence if they're AFK or new to EQ.

A coworker and his wife (they did have an IP exemption) were grouped and he went AFK for just a few minutes. As he walked back up to his computer, he saw some tells from a GM. Before he could reply, he was kicked and shortly after that, so was his wife. It took months to get that ban reversed.
