Game Mechanics: Throwing boulder dmg compared to bow dmg

I am asking about this because most Windstriker rangers aren't coming close this kind of damage, in fact I think if you parsed boulder damage it would be higher than melee (maybe not)

Just an example of how brutal boulders hit on this box - I have been hit by a 577 dmg deadly strike. I am just curious I guess if the formula is working as intended - as I imagine it would be irrelevant on blue and go undiscovered all this time.
