I have run into a couple real megachads that only play a rogue. They usually don't speak in voice comms, and usually have full BiS on their rogue and play for 2 years until quitting. Their DPS is sorely missed when they finally retire - but their legacy lives on forever.

This phenomenon is more a function of P99 than EQ in general. I tried a bunch of classes back on classic live in the early days and landed on bard, played bard exclusively back then until I left the game and started as a bard main on P99. The new content schedule worked out that as the top players starting to reach the end of progression that new content would come out and extend the things to accomplish on your singular main character.
What happens is you hit a point where there is no more progression for your main class on P99 and so you either call it quits and leave P99 or you start making alts. Add to it that there isn't a monthly cost to maintaining each login in and folks can have unlimited accounts of alts. This is really the biggest departure from classic live to P99, the sheer amount of accounts, alts, and bots.

Yeah that's probably a fair point. On live, for quite awhile people had way less knowledge about things like how to most efficiently exp, the best places to go, etc. so leveling took longer than it does here. Plus the expansions were moving somewhat quickly so it wasn't like you got to the end of Velious with a main and then had all the time in the world to just level countless alts, you'd always need to keep some level of focus on your main.
On P99, I have multiple chars who I would define as a "main" in the sense that I play them regularly. On live in the classic era I had a couple alts and one serious "main".

Plus iirc it was the next expansion after velious, shadows of luclin, that introduced AAs and created an almost endless amount of time that you could grind exp on your singular main character to continue to power them up.
