There is no reason we need more than 8 billion humans. It benefits nobody, not even humans. Just less space and resources for everyone. Nevermind that ecosystem collapse has implications for our happiness, survival, and prosperity.
Saying humans are a part of nature, while technically true, glosses over the important truth that unlike every other species, we are self-aware and capable of knowing better. We can choose to manage our own population and not breed like a bunch of fucking bacteria.

Elon is still correct: More humans rather than less is obviously better because humans do all the things that benefit humans, including minimizing carbon emissions. So unless you harbor some antipathy toward the human race as a whole, there's no good argument for less humans as opposed to more. Even if some amazing AI comes along to relieve us all of the drudgery of life, it's gonna be a human that develops that AI in the first place.
