if you know you're going to have to concede eventually, you might take more territory than you originally wanted, then you can give some back, and Putin can say to the russian people,

"In Our Victory, we have made a fair compromise to facilitate peacemaking, as our honorable and victorious special military operation has achieved its goal of 'de-nazifying' the sovereign state ruled by a jewish guy"

The strikes on poland today will end up being played off as "munitions that failed to hit their target which was military targets near poland"

but in reality its a message to poland saying: Are you really sure you want to build up your army along the border like you are doing? Poland has like 1500 tanks and thousands of troops sitting on the border like a chained up rabid dog.
