It was the other way around. The lies about Russia collusion etc. was just taken up and magnified by Russian accounts.

It's hard to imagine Russia or China would want Trump as President. I doubt that Russia would have dared invaded Ukraine with Trump in office. Back in 2016 I remember when everyone said if Hillary got elected she would start a war with Russia, and that never really made sense to me until fairly recently.

I don't think they were trying to get anyone elected as much as they were trying to promote divisive politics and chaos.

For example, the Russian government was proven to be investing in ads that both supported and opposed the same topic in an individual city.
