![]() Spoilers, so read if you want.
I loved Fellowship when it came out, I literally watched it every week when it hit the dollar theaters and later the DVDs. I read all the books after fellowship but before two towers came out. The absolute genius of the movie of Fellowship is how they breathed fresh life into Boromir, essentially a nobody in the books, very little attention given to him. They really did a rare improvement over the book here. Leaving out Tom Bombadil also was 100% necessary for pacing. Incorporating dialogue from other books and appendixes here showed real attention to detail and a love for fantasy. I'll say, Two Towers movie reaaaaally shit the bed for me. Way too much comedy out of Gimli. I also identified the ent as Gimli's voice and ruined my immersion, even looked like him. So many little things like that in Two Towers ruined the movie for me. Saying Saruman controlled the king with some kind of old man spell was stupid, in the books I much prefer Wormtongue being the crafty villain convincing the king he was too old and to rest, just a slow drip of poisonous words working him into apathy over the years. Aragorn falling off the cliff into the river. The way the Uruk-hai spoke english with the orcs and 'meat is back on the menu', uhhhh... wtf? There is even a scene in the caves below helm's deep where someone moves past one of those hanging spikes and you see it swing, clearly a rope off camera. Lots of unpolished things like that. Made me worry badly about Return of the King, felt Peter Jackson got lucky in Fellowship somehow and Two Towers was showing his inexperience for a major picture. Return of the King I thought was awesome, although I despise how they did the undead army, and I reaaaaally wish they did a flashback to Isildur cursing them here, but wasn't even in extended edition. The pippin song was on point, when Eowyn began to battle the Witch King as he emerged from the slaughtered wings of the Nazgul gave me goose bumps. The look on Frodo's face and how he delivered his line after the ring was gone felt super realistic. Lots of scenes on point like that. I didn't like how they tried to build tension like Frodo falling off with Gollum, felt like a lame fake out. I wish they gave a bit more screen time to the mouth of sauron here, could have been a way cooler character and even had some battle moments while the ring was being carried. I pictured that meeting much better in the book, where Gandalf seemed completely broken and people thought he was actually ready to give in to Sauron's demands, with the mouth of sauron revelling from the pain in his voice. Didn't like how Frodo turned against Sam because of some missing rations, yet Sam decides to turn back after discovering the missing ration... like, he already knows it was Gollum, how did seeing that motivate him? Felt very poorly thought out and just some 'let's create some tension and find a dramatic return for Sam'. All in all, I loved the movie as a trilogy. I think they can do better though, hope they remake it in the next 10 to 20 years

![]() The bad CGI shot I notice the most is when Eomer and them are just starting down the hill to rescue Helm's Deep. Looks like a video game cutscene when they move through the bottleneck at the top.
