Default Baton of Flame vs Braid of Golden Hair

Which is better DPS?

Baton is 13/17 with a 100dd proc
Braid is 15/21 with a 200 dot in 4 ticks

https://wiki.project1999.com/Baton_of_Flame vs https://wiki.project1999.com/Braid_of_Golden_Hair

I can never remember what the dang primary/secondary modifier calcs are on weapons.

BoF has a 11.4% better ratio and a DD that’s semi-lure.
No contest.

All 1h’s have a 11pt damage bonus MH. No damage bonus offhand.

Braid criminally underrated dogshit alt rogue offhand though.

Got a rogue you leave in vp or seb for 32k burns? 1dkp offhand cant be beaten.

I'm rocking the braid and Swiftwind on my ranger and loving it. Sure, I could have a faster weapon but the DPS is real nice.

I can never remember what the dang primary/secondary modifier calcs are on weapons.
Is this for the bard? I wanted a BoF on mine but got a Nature's Melody first and then my desire for it faded. So I didn't end up getting either of these.

Now for some napkin math:

Considering the damage bonus (only added when prime hand): supposing +11 damage per hit (I am never sure if its +11 or +12), if you landed every hit at max haste that would be ~13 dps from just the damage bonus for the baton and ~10.5 damage bonus dps for the braid. So if you land 2/3rds of your hits (complete guess), consider (13-10.5)*2/3 = ~1.7 more dps from damage bonus for the baton than for the braid.

Now the proc; consider ~2 procs/minute prime hand. ~3.3 proc dps for the baton, "up to twice that??" for the braid, but considering that gets tuned down if the mob dies within 24s of the proc, or a second proc happens within 24s of another, or someone else is using the braid and their proc overlaps, maybe tune that 6.7 down to ... 5? maybe less on mobs that die fast ... as just a gut guess. n.b. your parser wont pick up the braid proc damage so it's a little less fun, and only your parser will pick up the BoF proc damage. That 5 would be +1.7 proc dps for the braid than for the baton.

Now the ratio. 13/17 / (15/21) = ~1.07; so the BoF ratio is about 7% better. Suppose the bard was doing ~38 melee dps to a target. Suppose 8 was from the damage bonus, leaving 30 ratio dps. Suppose that's 60/40 prime/offhand (complete guess), leaving ~18 dps from primehand ratio. An extra 7% over 18 dps is like ~1.3 dps.

So, given all those wild assumptions we get prime hand:
Damage bonus: +1.7 baton
Proc: -1.7 baton
Ratio: +1.3 baton
= +1.3 baton dps over braid dps, more if we were too kind to the braid's proc dps, or too kind to offhand damage

Off hand:
Damage bonus: 0
Proc: -0.8 dps baton (1 proc per minute instead of 2, so dividing by 2)
Ratio: +.8 baton (using +7% of 40% instead of 60% of the 30 dps)
= a wash between baton and braid

My gut thinks the BoF has a better edge than this math suggests, maybe I messed something up. I don't think I would actually prefer the braid proc even though I'm estimating it at more dps here: mr instead of fr, dot blocking my mez, dot overridden by other people using the braid & not doing full damage when the target dies, dot doesn't show up on my parse.

Of all the dps raid weapons one can get the braid is a really cheap buy. In that budget pick category I would prefer to go with a Vyemm club or especially Shovel of the Harvest for not much more.

Slow DW weapons aren’t very fun. My Vyemm whip is a bit sluggish. I wish there was an upgrade to the Rev whip…
