I prefer Paizo Games' Pathfinder system. It's a highly refined version of D&D 3.5 that excises a lot of the dumb shit from D&D. For example:
Grappling is easier to deal with. Bards are useful. The base classes are enticing enough to avoid prestige classes. Caster classes are much easier to play. And so on. It's basically D&D 3.5 that's been edited to remove unnecessary complication, things that don't make any sense and implement more logical choices/progression for classes and whatnot. I highly recommend it.

I was an old-school D&D player...started around 1975. Loved the table sessions we used to have...sometimes they'd go on for days, lol.
I eventually came to prefer Rolemaster, though. Pretty tight game released by ICE.

Ran across something pretty interesting. It's an online hosting of tabletop games called:
SceneGrinder From the FAQ: What games can SceneGrinder handle? Dungeons and Dragons®, Advanced or otherwise, Hero System®, d20®, Pathfinder®, Risus, Microlite20... pretty much anything there's a template for. You can create your own templates or borrow and adapt templates from other members who published theirs. Virtual tabletop games. Why didn't I think of that?

Played D&D from 2nd edition through to 4th. I'm not fond of 4th edition, as it feels like playing a computer game instead of a big open rpg with endless possibilities. I love 3.5 as it gives you so much room, but at the same time that same room can easily destroy the game. More characters than I wish to recall were simple game-ruiners, some designed by me whose effectiveness even surprised me.
I've dm'ed, I've played and I've done dungeon crawling with huge ass grids drawn out on maps and plastic boards and even with miniature walls, doors and other random dungeon crap. I also played with guys who didn't and honest to god, D&D without grid maps is less fun. I don't mind skipping mindless dungeon crawls and sticking to RPG and RP combat encounters, but from time to time a dungeoncrawl is cool as its a team effort. Just like with EQ [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.] I'd love to try out Rolemaster though. My cousin has the Lord of the Ring books from way back and it all seems so overwhelmingly awesome. <3 nerds

Here's my first DnD sourcebook. I loved every edition because I love the game. Guess I played the most 2nd Edition overall though. That was my heyday as a player (seldom was a DM) | ||
