AMD FreeSync & Choppiness

I have a PC with an AMD GPU and displays which support FreeSync. I also have a laptop with nVidia dedicated GPU and Gsync. The thing I noticed is that the nVidia device works perfectly with buttery smooth high fps both in window and full screen. The AMD device only works perfectly in full screen mode. In window mode, i get lots of stuttering and frequent FPS drops.

There is a workaround that someone else noted on another thread, which is to disable FreeSync. It's workable, but not ideal.

Anyone (a) observed this with an AMD GPU/FreeSync and (b) have any workaround that doesn't involve disabling FreeSync?
