Could just be a failed network card / router.

Failed hard drive will be the biggest thing to worry about. Unless they're using raid 4/5 in which case its not that big of a deal.

AWS would be horrible considering this is non-for-profit. Its very expensive for services that require 99.99% uptime. Self hosting is a lot more cost effective.

Server staff here is amazing. Some games that make millions would take much longer to acknowledge a problem.
