Transporting psychotic completely legit (no drug use) manic veteran woman to VA Hospital today, and she’s actively hallucinating the entire way, also euphoric, high energy, and won’t shut up for 1 single second the entire 30 min drive there
Not sure what the voices are saying, but she is singing religious songs over them, then yelling back at them, screaming back. Then laughing hysterically, totally labile affect. I’m like “are you ok? I know you have a lot going on right now, but can you not be so loud? I have sensitive ears” She completely ignores multiple requests. So I can either pull over and call the fire department, or improvise. So I pop in my Powerbeats pro $200 headphones and put on some loud music But before then, amidst all the non-sensical religious babbling she at one point yells: “I hope Putin wins the war, so he can put an end to homosexuality!! I am a rootin’…for the Putin!!” Ah sometimes hard to keep a poker face [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.] When I get in the ER and help her get checked in, after she goes and sits down I lean in and say to the check in nurse “hey FYI, she’s very psych symptomatic and has been yelling and singing at the top of her lungs the entire ride here. Chances are she is going to start up with that very soon in your crowded lobby” with a wink Nurse winks back and says “gotcha, ok, we’ll handle it” This lady gonna skip the line lol | ||

Easy to figure out what was wrong too, she was taking Zoloft, but clearly had a bi-polar mood disorder. And if you give an SSRI to someone like that, a med that’s designed to boost energy levels (because depression lowers these), it can push someone into a manic phase. She should be on a mood stabilizer She was going on 2 days no sleep per husband, who she bit that day But hey, that’s on the VA doc to figure that out… | ||
