Its a way to add immersion and dynanism to a MMO.

scenario:

Paladin strolls through Oasis of Marr, patrolling the region, protecting it from Evil.

Troll SK comes up from the swamps, lurks near the beach looking for prey....

Paladin spots the evil beast and draws his sword and.......

(on blue) makes rude gestures to the troll while troll ignores him

(on red) a titanic battle between light and dark ensues.. holy vs unholy...who shall win? (blue)

I wish it was always like this and JUST this..But then after the kill the rest of the community is forced to endure or to attempt to ignore the next possible 5-30 min of immature banter that almost always ensues after the kill. So many "are you mad bro?'s"...makes me cringe. Would be great to kill the person take the coin and move on....but most folks must have that extra validation of humiliating the person at the keyboard using /ooc. If humiliation is your thing then use /tells. Leave me out of your childish antics.

BTW i do play on Red about half my time, and it is a lot of fun...just cant stand global /ooc though i see its benefits but also the drawbacks like I just described.

Looking forward to the xp bonus.

Have you never played a PVP game before?? They don't always attract the nicest people.

I myself have never understood the appeal of PvP. I mean I get the competition thing. But why do it in MMO's. MMO's nowadays focus on it so much because it does bring a large crowd. I have always felt that if I crave throttling someone in competition I will go play Mortal Kombat or something. Or Counterstrike, or any number of a bajillion FPS's out there.
Fighting other player's is far more competitive than fighting AI's. When you kill someone, you get a sense of accomplishment that killing an AI could never match. When you die, it'll feel like it actually mattered.

I could never imagine not doing what I wanted to do because a guild got there before me. In pvp, you can fight for the right to the zone. No "poop socking"(Never even heard of this term until reading blue forums).

PvP is definitely not for everyone, as proven on these blue forums. Many of the people here have tried pvp in one game or another and probably got their shit pushed in. So much so that they actually are offended and scared by the mere mention of pvp, as demonstrated in this thread.

EQ pvp was around from the beginning. They anticipated that people wanting to pvp would be in the minority, but it was hardly an afterthought. I've always found EQ pvp incredibly fun because the world is completely open and theres nothing else that compares. All content can be contested.

People often complain about balance, but in EQ pvp, everyone without exceptions has their advantages and disadvantages. You just have to make sure you have your clickies and don't try to play outside your element.

If EQ weren't such a level/gear dependent game, I'd love the "role-playing" aspect of PVP. But as it is now it's hard to compete with anyone unless you put a lot of time into your characters. Like, a *lot* of time.

Not true, browse through all the screenshots in the red section showing kills by undergeared players on geared players.

Gear is not everything, opportunity, strategy, some luck, etc all play a part.

Fixt.

EQ is much less gear-dependent on the whole than most mmos.

In classic for sure. The advantage that raid gear gives in classic is very small when compared to other easily farmable or purchasable gear.

Everquest pvp starts becoming more gear dependent with Kunark and even more so in Velious.

Even tho EQ started the loot race in modern mmos. Also try to pvp as a melee without a lot of MR and then tell me how gear-dependent this game is.
