I’m gonna play Devil’s Advocate here. Yes YouTube does clamp down on things (and I mean CLAMP down) that I don’t agree with, but they also put up with a lot of other shit too
I don’t understand or agree with their weird censorship about things like covid or the past election…but as someone who watches more YouTube than I like to admit, I respect them for allowing more free speech than I used to anticipate For example, they had to decide on the Transphobia thing…either they allow none of it, or all of it, and they seem to allow all of it. A lot of conservative channels have free reign to make vids seen by hundreds of thousands encouraging people to misgender trans people not out of malice (maybe if it seemed like pure malice it might be censored I dunno), but out of a belief that not encouraging them is healthiest for them. They also allowed to strongly push back against changing rules for trans people and especially gender affirming stuff for trans kids You can say you think black people as an ethnicity commit more crime per capita and cite crime statistics on YouTube, something that Twitter would probably freak the living fuck out about. You can basically say anything you want, except not about covid or the last election So yeah, it’s far from perfect. And clamping down on political topics strays deep into election meddling in its own way. But for a big tech company that obviously has far more Dems than conservative staff, it could be a lot worse Kk time to disagree

Well if your argument is that youtube is better than the news, but pretty much just as shitty then sure who's gonna argue with that?

News isn’t like that. Mainstream media won’t even mention that 41 year old that ran over the conservative teen, that shit is memory holed, but they blasted the time a conservative ran over a girl at Charlottesville all over everyone’s faces for months YouTube could remove all negative stuff about trans people calling it phobia. They could take the Dem approach and say anything negative spoken about black culture is racist. They could say calling covid the Wuflu and saying it came from China is racist and remove all that. I can’t think of anything other than covid treatments or the last election that YouTube would not allow (other than obvious stuff like porn, extreme violence, etc), and that’s far better than mainstream news

I also think that while YouTube does probably throttle conservative’s reach, people are mistaking its algorithm trying to feed you more of what you want as bias
For example, I can watch a vid that talks about something politically controversial, and YouTube will go “you want more of that? Here you go” and show me 4 more other channel vids just like it Whereas I have to go wayyyy out of my way to see Democrat-biased videos. Even when I seek one out the algorithm goes “I know you’re not into that shit so don’t worry I won’t show you more”. If it was biased, it shouldn’t do that. It should constantly sneak democrat shit into my related vids whether I sought it out or not The obvious strong bias they have that I completely don’t agree with is this fetishizing and worshipping legacy media as some sort of authorities on everything, and pushing their political biased propaganda garbage to the top of search results. But luckily this still happens for conservative channels like fox, there’s just fewer of those But that related vid feed….is legit. I like

I get suggested breaking news videos from 4 years ago, no joke. Live feeds, of hurricanes from years ago trying to search for Ian footage. I subscribe to 400 channels, but the same 4 cover my entire frontpage right now.

I remeber that Brian dude talking about the "awe" of that missle cruiser launching strikes on... Syria? A few years back. I remember watching it and thinking "This is the network conservatives think is left wing? The only reason this guy doesn't have a visible erection is because his desk obstructs the view." I've watched them cover stories where they dismissively label civilian casualties as "suspected terrorists" and stuff like that. Or referring to a group of mostly black protestors as rioters, and a group of mostly white protestors as... protestors. This sort of thing happened a lot in the Civil Rights era. The "outside agitators" line is over a century old. I imagine CNN would tell you they attempt to be centrist, but as I always say, the center in America is pretty right-wing. I mean, there's no algorithim to feed news stories to the viewer based on past viewed videos like on Youtube, but I think the same forces are basically at work. Analysts can estimate peak viewership, based on those Nielsen boxes and I guess ad space demand, and then slowly realize what content makes more revenue. It's just automated or semi-automated on Youtube. I remember seeing conservatives gripe (and possibly liberals, dunno) about Google burying search results and thinking that they were just misunderstanding how search engines collate data. Not saying I trust or that I am a fan of any of these various corps. It all just seems like a big misunderstanding to me. All of them are just abiding by supply and demand, that's an amoral process on paper. And not that individual parts of segments aren't biased on way or the other, Anderson Cooper and Rachel Maddow are obviously liberals and Sean Hannity is obviously a conservative. I don't see why anyone falls for the idea that any news network is "unbiased". They are all biased to an extent, they're made by human beings. I think we all just need to get better at spotting bias. There is so much loaded language in the news.
